Friday January 31st

 Happy Friday!


Here is the plan for today:

Period 1-Red light, read aloud and workshop lesson on finding the main idea in a reading passage.

Period 2 -I have some questions for them to answer about 'finding the main idea' then they can work with a partner to read or write...and hopefully finish presenting the last 3 CYOA slideshows.

Period 3 is math.  Still working on subtraction strategies. We'll focus on compensation today. Subtraction Math Strategies Reference Charts.pdf

Period 4 is Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 and 6 is Art.  If it's nice, we'll stay outside for a bit, then come in and do some fun 'name art'.

Thursday January 30th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -red light, Read aloud -conjunction collaboration activity.

Period 2 -Present our 'complex sentences' and watch some CYOA presentations

Period 3 -Grade 2's to test out their boats while the Grade 3's continue to work on their city research pamphlet

Wednesday January 29th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 and 2 -The Grade 2's are building boats with Captain's Smeaton & Raspopov.  Grade 3's are staying put.  We'll do some work on using quotation marks properly. Then, we'll continue working on our Ontario City pamphlets.

Period 3 and 4 is Math.  We'll work on using a number line to subtract.  I've got some work for them to do and some questions on prodigy as well.  Hopefully we'll get outside for a little bit.

Period 5 is Health with Mr. D.

Period 6 is Guitar with Mr. Hatch and Mr. Cross

Tuesday January 28th

 I hope everyone had a nice long weekend...missing quite a few kids today...maybe extra long weekends?

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, Read aloud, Weekend round up, and a bit of time to read or write with a friend

Period 2 -French with Mr. Woolley.

Period 3 -Just a quick check in to make sure everyone is okay with Addition....before we start subtraction!  Going to be teaching them similar strategies as addition...today we'll be working on the 'break apart...expanded form'  Subtraction Math Strategies Reference Charts.pdf.

Period 4 I have some work on paper and on the computer to reenforce the concepts covered.

Period 5 and 6 is Science for the Grade 2's in Raspopov/Smeaton's room.  Grade 3's are going to stay here and work on researching their Ontario City...

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1-Red light, read aloud, Reader's/Writer's workshop-student choice

Period 2 - We shared some Choose Your Own Adventure slideshows.

Period 3 we'll play outside for some extra fun.

Period 4 is Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 and 6 we'll do some math and finish up some art!


REMINDER...MONDAY IS A PD DAY...NO SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN!

Thursday January 23rd

 Here is the plan today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud -independent reading/finish up science....

Period 2 -we have the chromebooks to work on either English prodigy, Epic books, or writing on Google Slides.

Period 3 is Science/Social studies.  Grade 2's to Smeaton/Raspopov...Grade 3's stay here to work on researching a city.

Period 4 is math.  We're going to do an addition scavenger hunt around the school.

Period 5 is computer buddies...we'll teach the kids in Mrs. Ever's class about subtraction and have some fun on Dojo Island

Period 6 is gym with Mr. D.

Wednesday January 22nd

 Here is what we did today:

Period 1 and 2-red light, read aloud, and we talked about conjunctions (and watched conjunction junction) and then we did some work making more complex fun sentences.  We had a few kids present their CYOA slideshows too .Schoolhouse Rock, conjunction junction -greatest song ever?

Period 3 and 4 we reviewed all our different addition strategies and did some work...we're really starting to get it...most kids are a fan of the Standard Algorithm. Addition Math Strategies.pdf

Period 5 they had gym at the church with Mr. D.

Period 6 Violet's dad, Jim, came in to help with our very first guitar lesson.  We sounded great.  I'm going home to eat some Tylenol now!

Tuesday January 21st

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, phonics lesson on /er/ and all the ways you can spell it.

Period 2 -French with Mr. Woolley.

Period 3 and 4 is math .  We'll review compensation from yesterday and learn our last addition strategy -the standard algorithm.  We have some work to do and then hopefully answer some questions on math prodigy.

Period 5 and 6 the Grade 2's will head to Smeaton/Raspopov for Science.  The Grade 3's will stay here and we'll finish our indigenous architecture slideshows.  If time permits, we'll revisit the landform in Ontario.  Hopefully starting work on making a pamphlet for a city of our choosing.  

Monday January 20th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, Read aloud, Weekend Round Up.

Period 2 -was reader's/writer's workshop.  Student choice...some of the kids continued to work on their slideshows.

Period 3 was Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 4 was math -we learned about addition using compensation (e.g., 29 + 15 is like 30 + 14 ...which i s easier to solve....compensation, add 1 to 29 subtract 1 from 15).

Period 5 we worked some more on solving addition questions using compensation on Blooket.  

Period 6 is Library book exchange / finish up slideshows....

Friday January 17th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, squiggly story, reader's/writer's workshop - student choice.

Period 2- I'm hoping the last period to work on our CYOA slideshows.

Period 3 is math. I have some regrouping/baseten block worksheets to do...I'm hoping maybe to teach them the next strategy, called compensation..

Period 4 is Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 and 6 we'll stay outside for a bit before we come inside and do some art....today we'll be looking at perspective, and we'll draw a snow-person huddle.

Thursday January 14th

Here is the plan for today:
Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, reader's/writer's workshop...and maybe a presentation or two?
Period 2 -2nd last period to work on our CYOA slideshows (I would ideally like to finish them this week).
Period 3 -Science/Social Studies - Grade 2's to Raspopov/Smeaton, Grade 3's to finish work on their indigenous architecture slideshows.  
Period 4 -Math -We'll finally play the game 'race to 100/flat' in partners (we played as a whole class yesterday)...continuing to work on regrouping (trading in 10 ones for 1 ten).
Period 5 -Computer buddies...more digital art today.
Period 6 -Mr. D for gym!

Wednesday January 15th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, and we started presenting our choose your own adventures.

Period 2 -we'll have the chromebooks to finish up our choose your own adventure, or work on bonus slideshows.

Period 3 and 4 we'll play the Race to 100 game from yesterday we didn't get to, and work more on regrouping base ten blocks (e.g., 12 ones is actually regrouped into 1 ten rod and 2 ones).  Any extra time we have at the end we'll do math prodigy questions.  Primary maths games: How to play Race to 100

Period 5 is Health with Mr. D.

Period 6 we'll play a game of silent seatball and some charades to have some fun.

Tuesday January 14th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, independent reading/writing.

Period 2 - French -Mr. Woolley.

Period 3 and 4 is Math.  We're going to continue working on 'regrouping' with base ten blocks.  Similar to this:  Primary maths games: How to play Race to 100

I have some worksheets to do as well.  

We are also going to try a new math website called 'Knowledgehook'.  It's on google classroom.  

Period 5 and 6 the Grade 2's are heading to Smeaton/Raspopov and the Grade 3's will stay here continuing to work on their indigenous architecture slideshows.

Thursday January 9th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 - Red light, read aloud, and the phonics lesson from yesterday I didn't get to all about 'r-controlled vowels'...specifically the ar/ & or, ore/or.  There should be a bit of independent reading time before we get the chromebooks.

Period 2 -We will continue to work on our Choose Your Own Adventure stories on Google Classroom...integrating links into our Google Slides.

Period 3 -The Grade 2's are off to Raspopov/Smeaton for some Science fun.  Grade 3's will stay here and we'll dig a little deeper into First Nation Architecture.  I'm hoping we can find some time to research a specific First Nation dwelling and find out which group used it, how it was built, and what sort of forces are acting on it.

Period 4 is math.  We're continuing with addition strategies.  We've mastered the number line and 'expanded form' addition.  We'll be building off that working on adding in chunks (which is similar to number-line...just without the number-line).

Period 5 we have computer buddies.  We're going to work on our art skills with a couple of really fun 'digital art' websites. 

Period 6 they have Mr. D for gy.

Wednesday January 8th

 Here is what we did today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, and a lesson on creating links within Google Slides

Period 2 - We started work on our very own 'Choose Your Own Adventure' slideshows.  They are very excited about this.

Period 3 - we stayed outside for an extra 10 minutes...but then most of us got cold and came in.  We reviewed the 'number line' addition technique from yesterday and I taught them the 'break apart/expanded form' method today (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zRe9BFXAAA).  The goal is to teach them several methods and let them pick the method they like best. 

Period 4 we did a worksheet and followed that up with some similar questions on Math Prodigy.

Period 5 was Health with Mr. D.

Period 6 we had 'old school' free time where the kids were unplugged and played board games or drew pictures with their friends.

Period 5 and 6 the Grade 2's will head to Smeaton/Raspopov for Science and the Grade 3's will stay here.  We'll look at Indigenous architecture (e.g., long houses, igloos, wigwams).  We'll discuss their construction techniques and what makes them strong and stable.  The kids will have a chance to construct their own Indigenous structures using materials around the class...

Monday January 6th 2025!!!

Welcome back.

It was so nice to see all the kids again.  I know this is amazing class because I actually missed them!

Here is the plan for today...we'll keep it light as we adjust to back to school.

Period 1 -Red light, Read aloud, Weekend round up and a desk swap!
Period 2 -Student choice, reader's/writer's workshop.

Period 3 is music with Mrs. Haynes.
Period 4 we'll do a quick lesson on 'making 10'.  Our next math unit will be adding and subtracting numbers.  Then we'll head outside for a little extra outdoor time.

Period 5 we'll play a game I call 'battle-math'....where they roll dice and add up numbers.  After battle math, we'll answer some simple math questions on prodigy.
Period 6 we'll head to the library for book exchange, and maybe have a little free time (if we've finished our math).
