Tuesday September 30th

 Period 1 - Red light, Read aloud, and a discussion about Orange Shirt Day...what it is, and what it means.

Period 2 -French with Mr. Woolley.

Period 3 -We'll stay outside for a bit.  When we come in and we'll play race to 50 in partners. Raceto50or100APlaceValueGame.pdf

Period 4 -we'll talk about re-grouping and do a couple of worksheets to consolidate.  


Period 5 -is Science, we'll learn about erosion, do a bit of work. 
Period 6 -I'm hoping to get the chromebooks to do some math prodigy.

Monday September 29th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, weekend round up

Period 2 -Reading or Writing with a friend or alone.

Period 3 -outside for a bit, come in and play a game called 'race to 50'...it teaches the kids the beginning of regrouping. Raceto50or100APlaceValueGame.pdf

Period 4 -we'll work on using Place Value to help us add on Math Prodigy.

Period 5 -is gym with Mr. D.

Period 6 -is a little mindfulness, a little wayside, and a little free time.

Friday September 26th

 Yikes...I forgot to blog yesterday...my apologies to all of my reader (purposely not plural). 

Here is what we are going to do today...hopefully.

Period 1 - Mr. Thompson, the math coach is going to come into our classroom and teach us a lesson on Place Value...should be fun.

Period 2 -we'll head to the library and do book exchange plus read or write with parnters.

Period 3 -is Art -we'll work on blending warm and cool colours using oil pastels.

Period 4 -we'll be participating in the Terry Fox Run.

Period 5 -we'll watch an episode or two of Wayside and enjoy some free time.

Period 6 -The class has Mr. D for gym.

Wednesday September 24th

 Here is what we did today:

Period 1 -Red light (we're so good at Sudoku now).  Read aloud - new book, The BFG. and reader's workshop: mini lesson on keeping on eyes and attention on our books.  

Period 2 - Writer's workshop - we set 'dot' goals and we each cut up an apple to add to our communal applesauce.

Period 3 was Math.  We did our first worksheet today, it was all about Place Value, the kids crushed it.

Period 4 was Music, but mostly just a fire drill.

Period 5 and 6 we crushed the apple sauce to make it fairly chunky.  We had 2 helpings each...1 with no cinnamon or sugar, the other with a bit of both.  We also watched the Wayside Movie while I handed out applesauce and we ate it.  I was hoping to share some applesauce with some of the parents on the blacktop...but unfortunately we ate it all....they loved it.  

Once this movie ends, we'll enjoy some free time, and hopefully we can get to art tomorrow.

Tuesday September 23rd

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, Sudoku and finish our first Read Aloud (Wayside).

Period 2 -French with Mr. Woolley.

Period 3 -we'll stay outside for a bit, and come in and explore some base ten blocks...practice making numbers.

Period 4-we'll answer some more questions on Prodigy.

Period 5 -I've got a soil permeability experiment we'll do as a class and talk about what we can add to soil.

Period 6 we'll enjoy some unplugged free time.

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light (Sudoku).  Weekend Round Up. Read aloud.  Word Detective game...we'll talk about antonyms and synonyms.

Period 2 -Student choice to read or write, with a partner or alone.

Period 3 -if it's nice we'll stay outside for a bit.  When we come in we'll do some math.  We'll talk about building numbers with base ten blocks.

Period 4 -they'll use the chromebooks to answer 8 (base ten block related) questions on Math prodigy.

Period 5 is Gym with Mr. D.

Period 6 is Free time....

Friday September 18th

Happy Friday everyone!

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, we'll do a little 'build a word' challenge.

Period 2 -we'll head to the library for book exchange/ read or write with a partner.

Period 3 we'll stay outside for a bit, then come in and do some more math.  Focusing on solving hard problems, working together an improving our growth mindset. 

Period 4 I have the chrome books.  The kids will have to answer 8 questions on Prodigy before they get some free time (which most of them will choose class dojo).

Period 5 we have a virtual assembly to learn about the Terry Fox run.

Period 6 is gym with Mr. D.

Thursday September 18th


(This isn't all of them...but seriously, how awesome do these look)

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1- Red light (more Sudoku).  Now that our watercolour paints have dried, we'll finish our art from yesterday.  Then we'll do reader's workshop - mini lesson focusing on keeping our eyes and mind on our book. 

Period 2-Writer's workshop - mini lesson focusing on silencing the 'it's no good' voice in our heads.

Period 3 -we'll stay outside for a bit of extra time and enjoy the weather.  When we come in we'll look at solving some difficult monster problems...focusing again on a positive growth mindset.  

Period 4 is music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 -we'll finally get to the 'what's in soil' worksheet I've been meaning to get to for awhile. 

Period 6 -Hopefully we can enjoy some free time.

Wednesday September 17th

 It's already period 4 an d I'm having a great day...I love this class!


Here is what we are doing (and have already done):

Period 1 -We did another Sudoku (https://www.sudokuonline.io/kids/numbers-4-4?utm_source=chatgpt.com#google_vignette) for red light.  It was awesome how many kids were able to solve it...we just learned yesterday!  Then we talked about going back and re-reading things (like Malcolm did for me yesterday) when things just don't make sense, for reader's workshop.

Period 2 -was writer's workshop.  We came up with some Stamina Mantras (don't quit, keep the pencil in your hand, take a deep breathe, keep your foot on the gas).  Arianna, Maddy, Big Mac, Zoe and Elio all shared their writing for today.

Period 3 we stayed outside for a bit, then came in and played the game Sum it Up...I took my revenge on Emmie for beating me yesterday.  A fun game to practise place value.

Period 4 is/was Music.

Period 5 and 6 is art.  We're going to try to use water colours and sharpies to make beautiful sunset pictures...you can check out my sample (and I'm a terrible artist)...Hopefully they turn out well.  I'm feeling confident.

Tuesday September 16th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1- Red light -we're going to look at Sudoku puzzles...we'll start off easy, and work together. 

Period 2 - French with Mr. Woolley.

Period 3 -we'll stay outside for a little bit and come back in and continue to work on our math mindset...focusing on working with partners.

Period 4 -we'll play the Place Value game...talk a little bit about place value.

Period 5 -we'll debrief after our soil investigation from last week and do a bit of work about the living and non living things in soil.

Period 6 -any extra time we have we'll enjoy some free time.

Period 1- Red light (spot the difference), read aloud, and weekend round Up.

Period 2 -we'll talk about How to Be a Great Partner Reader - We'll go over the expectations of 'reading with a partner'. 

Period 3 we'll stay outside for a bit, enjoy the weather.  When come back in we'll solve some challenging math puzzles...and work on our growth mindset.

Period 4 we'll practice logging into math prodigy and answering some easy addition questions.

Period 5 Mr. D has them for gym.

Period 6 is a little mindfulness/free time.

Happy Friday!


Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, and a fun silly stories activity (working on building community).

Period 2 -Library, and a chance to to book exchange and work with a partner to read or write.

Period 3 -we'll stay outside for a bit...come in and try to solve some tricky math puzzles...trying to prove that we can do hard things...and work with partners.

Period 4 -I have the chromebooks booked.  I want to show them a fun math website called math prodigy. 

Period 5 - we'll enjoy a little free time before gym class

Period 6 is gym with Mr. D.

Thursday September 11th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light (spot the difference), read aloud, reader's workshop: expressing emotion...thinking about how the character is saying things (e.g., angry) and saying/reading it like that.

Period 2 -Writer's workshop: the mini lesson focuses on writer's being problem solvers (e.g., what to do if you're running out of steam, or are distracted). 

Period 3-we'll stay outside for a bit.  Then we'll come in for math.  We'll continue to work on our math mindset...staying positive and trying hard things. I have some cross-number puzzles we'll try and solve.

Period 4 is music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 we'll examine our dirt sample from Tuesday...looking for living and non living things. 

Period 6 will be free time.  I may even get the chromebooks for anyone who wants to go onto class dojo.

Wednesday September 10th

 I enjoy getting to school early these days...one of the benefits of dropping my daughter off at Aldershot HS each day.

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light (spot the difference) - Read aloud (Wayside).  Reader's workshop, continue to build stamina and today we'll talk about the 'Linger Finger'.  Slowing down and paying attention while we read.

Period 2 is writer's workshop.  Our mini lesson will focus on building stamina but also about the things we need to do our best writing.

Period 3 we'll stay outside for a few extra minutes (as per usual).  When we come in we'll talk a bit more about a healthy mindset for math.  We'll play 'Sum it Up' in partners. 

Period 4 is music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 and 6 we'll practice our procedures for Fire Drills.  Then we'll discuss warm and cool colours and hopefully create some fun name tags using warm and cool colours.  Any extra time we'll use for free time!

Tuesday September 9th

 Another before school blog:

Period 1-Red light, read aloud, reader's workshop - focus on building reading stamina!

Period 2 -French, first French class with Mr. Woolley.

Period 3 and 4 -we'll stay outside for a bit then come in and do some math.  We'll continue our work from yesterday about our 'growth mindset' and talk again about celebrating mistakes.  We'll work on some puzzles in partners, and talk about different ways to solve problem and how to work as a team.

If there's still time, I'd like to play the game 'sum it up' with the class.  

Period 5 is Science.  I"m hoping we can go outside and collect some soil samples then come inside and examine them.  We're going to talk about what's in soil (living and non living components).  We'll watch a short little clip on soil and do a bit of work.

Period 6 -the remaining time (if any) we'll have some free time!

Monday September 8th

 Since I get here so early this year, I'll probably blog before school most days...share my plan and hopefully it all goes according to plan...but often times, not so much.

Period 1 -Red light (spot the difference) - class discussion about pride in our work.  Weekend Round Up...sharing highlights from our weekend. Read aloud.

Period 2 - Reader's /Writer's workshop - on Mondays and Fridays I like to allow the kids to work in partners (if they wish) to read or write.  We'll talk about what that looks and sounds like.

Period 3 we'll stay outside for a little, then come in and do Math.  In math we're going to talk about making mistakes and celebrating mistakes...changing our growth mindset.  I've got some visual / spatial puzzles for them to solve in partners.

Period 4 we'll keep the good times rolling by logging into the chromebooks and exploring a really fun website called Class Dojo.  We'll focus on working together and respecting other people's creations.

Period 5 we've got Mr. D for gym.

Period 6 we'll have a little mindfulness time and unwind with some free time.

Friday September the 5th

 We made it!  First week of Grade 3, complete!  I'm already loving this class....thanks to anyone reading this for raising such great kids.

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 we're do another 'spot the difference' red light activity.  Then we'll read another chapter or two from Wayside.  Then we'll have a class discussion about 'Fair isn't always Equal'.  We'll talk about what that means and how it might look in the classroom.  Then we'll talk about our 'ideal' reading spots.

Period 2 we'll do our first 'writer's workshop' lesson of the year.  I'm going to play a game of would you rather with them...then they can either justify their answers or come up with their own 'would you rather's. 

Period 3 we'll stay outside for a few extra minutes. When we come in we'll finish our discussion about what math is and what a mathematician looks like.

Period 4  we'll play a fun and easy adding game where you add up the sum of 2 dice.  The game is called 'sum it up'.  

Period 5 we'll enjoy a little bit of free time / finish up 

Period 6 we have our first gym period of the year with Mr. D!

Thursday September 4th

 I'll try and do pre-blog blog...before the day starts since I have a couple of extra minutes this morning.


Well it looks like we'll be trapped indoors, at least for the first break anyways.

Period 1 -we'll practice doing a 'red light' activity, which is just a quiet 'spot the difference activity' while announcements are on. We'll have a morning circle, review expectations and talking about how awesome yesterday was.  Then I'll start our first read aloud 'Sideways Stories from Wayside School'.   We'll talk about building up our reading stamina and what independent reading looks like.

Period 2 -I will do a very brief, 10 word spelling test to see just where we're all at.  Zero pressure, just a tool for me.  Then we'll decorate some puzzle pieces that show how we're all connected...maybe get a song in there too?

Period 3 - We'll start Math.  Today we'll just be talking about what we think Math is...we'll talk about what makes a 'mathematician'.  We'll draw our own Mathematicians. 

Period 4 -Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 -We'll use the chromebooks for the first time today.  My goal is to get everyone to join our Google Classroom...wish me luck!  Then we'll go on a fun website made by Google that explains the importance of Internet Safety.

Period 6 we'll wrap up our day with some free time!

Wednesday September 4th

 First day...almost complete!

I've got a really good feeling about this class...I know it's still early...but it feels amazing already.  It's really funny how classes change so much from year to year.  Early impressions:  not super into singing/performing, love popcorn, mostly quiet, very kind!

Here is what we did today:

Periods 1 & 2 -we started off by talking about seating plans.  I stressed the importance of working with everyone in class.  I told them I change the seats every month and everyone will work with everyone.  Then we did the 'walking song'.  It's usually a big hit.  It gets the kids out of their seats and singing...not many kids wanted to get out of their seats or sing.  Strange.

Then we made some popcorn and shared highlights about ourselves.  1 highlight per piece of popcorn.  Most kids took handfuls of popcorn and then still wanted more. 

We worked on a colouring page/word search.  We practiced moving around the room and returning materials and sharing with our friends. 

We played the blanket game.  I thought it was a sort of game that can't be won...but I was wrong and we all won.  

After that we discussed that routines and procedures of our classroom.  Then we got ready for lunch. 

Period 3 we stayed outside for an extra 10 minutes...it was getting hot and Mrs. D got stung by a wasp.  When we came in we tried a new song, by Raffi called Willoughby Wallaby.  You can listen to it here...sorry for my poor singing and playing:   https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EWVTXbegjB1vfj1qmZZC6vMe85THHq-d/view?usp=sharing

After that we came up with class rules. 

1.Have fun

2. Take Responsiblity for yourself

3. Always try your best

4. Always help tidy up

5. Alway follow the school rules.

Period 4 (now) they're in Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 and 6 -We'll listen to the book -First Day Jitters and do a very simple activity about whether or not they wanted to come to school today.  We'll decorate puzzle pieces (that connect us all).  We'll enjoy a bit of free time, so we can see where all the cool games and toys are, and practice putting them away properly.  Hopefully we can end the day with a nice circle and I'll see them all again tomorrow!

Friday October 24th

 Happy Blue Jays Day! Here is the plan for today: Period 1 -Red light, read aloud and a mini lesson adjectives.  By the end of today we'...
