Tuesday Februrary 28th

 Last day of the month...already?

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -reader aloud and reader's workshop - mini lesson focusing on making our pauses match the meaning of what we're reading...

Period 2 is writer's workshop, we'll use the chrome books to finish our persuasive paragraphs on google classroom.

Period 3/4 we'll stay outside for a bit before we come in for math.  In math we'll look at the kilometre and do some more conversion activities.

Period 5 they have Mr. D for gym.

Period 6 we'll do a mindfulness art activity.

Monday February 27th

 Yikes...I forgot to blog today.

Period 1 desk clean out, and weekend round up.

Period 2 reader's/writer's workshop

Period 3 and 4 were outside and math...we looked at milimetres, and converting measurements (40 mm =4 cm)

Period 5 music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 6 we'll do a Blooket I made on our class novel, Nose From Jupiter. 

Friday February 24th

Happy day after the Snow Day!!

Here is the plan for today...

Period 1- Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 2 is reader's/writer's workshop. I'm hoping to finish our persuasive paragraphs.

Period 3 Mrs. Alvarez is coming in to do some fun writing with our class.  We'll be using our powers of persuasion to write about our dream jobs.

Period 4 we'll try to play our own Boggle in groups.

Period 5 we'll stay outside for a little bit with the other Grade 3's.  When we come back in, we'll do a bit of math.  Converting mm to cm's and m's.  

Period 6 I've booked the chromebooks so we can enjoy a bit of free time before the weekend...hopefully do some fun coding on code.org.

Wednesday February 22nd

 Here is the plan for today! (Monday Schedule)

Period 1 is reader's workshop.  The lesson focuses on how to read 'fiction' books with fluency.  

Period 2 is writer's workshop.  We'll write our persuasive paragraphs in 'good copy' on the chromebooks.

Period 3 is Math.   We'll start our new math unit on linear measurement.  We'll do some work on the smartboard, comparing cm's, mm's, and m's and KM's.  

Period 4 we'll answer some questions on Math Prodigy.  

Period 5 is Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 6 we'll work on creating awesome paper airplanes in preparation for a competition we'll have another day (where we measure how far they travel).

NOTE: Please pay attention to the HDSB website to see if we're in school tomorrow with the impending storm.   

Tuesday February 21st

 Here is the plan for today...a 'Friday Schedule'.

Period 1 is Music with Mrs. Haynes/Pancake day.

Period 2 we'll finish our pancakes come back and share the highlights from our weekend and read a bit from A Nose From Jupiter.  Hopefully have some time for reader's/writer's workshop.

Period 3 and 4 is Math.  we'll stay outside for a little extra, then come in for math.  We never got to the division games I had planned for last week, so I'm hoping to play them today.

Period 5 and 6 we have the chromebooks, I'm hoping to feed the coding fire that the kids have been really interested in.

Thursday February 16th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 is reader's workshop.  We'll focus on reading some of the most common phrases in the English language as a warm up...to help us develop fluency.

Period 2 is writer's workshop.  We'll hopefully finish our rough copies of our persuasive paragraphs...then any extra time, I'll let them do coding, if they wish.  Check out some of the games we created yesterday:

Period 3 is Math.  Before we start our next unit on linear measurement next week, we'll play some more division games.  

Period 4 is Health with Mr. D.

Period 5 and 6 will be some STEM challenge time.  We'll try constructing our own kites using only straws, tape, string and plastic bags....

NOTE:  TOMORROW IS A PD DAY....please don't send your kids to school.

Wednesday February 15th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 we're going to celebrate a little bit of Black History Month by listening to author Yolanda Marshall do a video presentation.  

Period 2 we're going to do some coding, hopefully create our own version of 'Flappy Bird'.  

Period 3 is French with Mrs. O'Neil.

Period 4 is Computer Buddies, and I'm hoping we'll have our Flappy Birds games done and we can share/play with our buddies.

Period 5 we're going to do another 'STEM' challenge.  Today's challenge will be can you build a kite with just straws, tape and plastic bags.

Period 6 we will do library exchange.  

Tuesday February 14th

 Happy Valentines Day!

Here is the plan for today.

Period 1 is reader's workshop.  We'll focus on 'getting your eyes ahead' to help with fluency.

Period 2 is writer's workshop.  I'm hoping to finish rough copies of our persuasive paragraphs.

Period 3 we'll stay outside for a bit before we come in for some Math.  We'll continue with Division.  I have a couple of division games to play.

Period 4 if there is still time, we might start a Valentines movie (Gnomeo and Juilet).

Period 5 they have Mr. D for gym.

Period 6 we'll finish up our movie...maybe even enjoy a little popcorn treat.

Monday February 13th

 Here is the plan for today...

Period 1 we'll read aloud a book about media literacy and share highlights of our weekends.

Period 2 is student choice reader's/writer's workshop.

Period 3 and 4 is math. I have several Division games planned.  If we have time afterwards we'll log into Prodigy and do some more division questions.

Period 5 -I just found out Mrs. Haynes is not here, so we'll start our 'Media' lesson a little early and carry it over Period 6.  If there is any time at the end of the day, perhaps we'll enjoy a little free time.

Friday February 10th

 TGIF...

Period 1 -Music - Mrs. Haynes.

Period 2 -Reader's/Writer's workshop - student choice

Period 3 and 4 we'll stay outside for a little extra before we come in for some Math.  We'll continue working on Division.  We'll do these worksheets:

If there is any time left over, I'd like to start work on our Media Literacy unit, looking at implied and overt messages in advertisements.

Period 5 I'm hoping as a class we can try and play Boggle in groups...sort of just go over the rules and try to figure out the game.

Period 6 I'm hoping we can coast into the weekend with a little bit of free time (after we've finished all our unfinished work).

Thursday February 9th

 Ugh...I'm back.  The Cross clan has been hit by covid...again.  

My symptoms are improving, so I'm back, masked.  Wearing a mask, teaching 8 year olds while congested should be a new form of torture...thankfully this class rocks.  

Here is the plan for today.

Period 1 -reader's workshop...I thought it best to not do any guided reading today (trying to keep my distance)

Period 2 -writer's workshop...we'll continue with persuasive writing.

Period 3 is math.  We'll work on arrays and equal groups/division:

Monday February 6th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 is red light and read aloud, followed by Weekend Round Up.

Period 2 is reader's/writer's workshop. I'm hoping most of the class will finish their Google drawing paragraph on Google classroom (from last week).

Period 3 and 4 we'll stay outside for a little bit, then come in to do math.  We're going to start looking at what division is and begin work on division. We'll go through this slide show together:

Friday February 3rd

 Friday!  A very cold Friday.

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1-Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 2 -Reader's Writers' Workshop - student choice.  I'm hoping to write our sweet paragraphs on Google Drawing, complete with pictures.  

Period 3 and 4 is Math.  We'll play a whole class game of Multiplication Bingo.  Then we'll use the chromebooks and play on Multiplication.com or Prodigy to brush up on our facts...next week we'll be diving into division!

Period 5 and 6 I'm going to call 'STEM' challenge.  The kids really enjoyed our 'who can build the strongest paper bridge' challenge earlier this week.  Today I'll challenge them to see who can build a catapult that throws a pom pom the furthest.  They'll only be able to use popsicle sticks and elastic bands.

Thursday February 2nd

 Here is the plan for today...

Period 1 is reader's workshop -we'll look at punctuation in the middle of the sentence (dashes, semi-colons and comma)

Period 2 is writer's workshop - we didn't have a lot of time yesterday to work on our periods...we'll continue writing our perfect paragraphs

Wednesday February 1st.

 Here is the plan for today.

Period 1: Desk Swap!  Then reader's workshop.  Mini lesson focusing on warming up with easy books then transferring to just right books.

Period 2:  We'll continue working on paragraphs...using our hamburger graphic organizers to write our own paragraphs.

Period is French with Mrs. O'Neil.

Period 4 is math.  We'll practise our multiplication facts with some colouring pages from this website:
