Friday 30 October 2020

Friday October 30th

 Happy Orange and Black day.

Here is the plan for today.

Period 1 -reader's/writer's workshop...student choice.

Period 2 -Mr. Butt for 'tech'

Period 3 and 4 we're going to read a bit of BFG...possibly finish? Maybe watch a little bit of Scooby Doo (a Cross family favourite).

Period 5 and 6 we've got the chromebooks.  Job number 1 is to finish our 'Research a City' social studies project.  Job number 2 is to relax before Halloween and check out some of these games:

https://www.safekidgames.com/halloween-games/

I hope everyone has a safe weekend!  Don't eat too much junk food!

Thursday 29 October 2020

Thursday October 29th

Only 2 days until Halloween! We're pretty excited in room 115.

We started our morning with a little competition of play doh jack o'lanterns.  Then I read a chapter from the BFG.  After that we did a mini lesson on 'juggling 3 balls' when solving unfamiliar words.  We need to think about whether the word looks right, sounds right or makes sense.

For writer's workshop, we talked about using emotions with strong feelings to help us generate topics for writing.

Period 3 and 4 were math.  We stayed outside a little longer, then we worked on some patterning.  Specifically, using tables to help us understand patterns.  The kids worked very hard and I think most of them are really getting the idea of patterns and tables.

We did these sheets:

Period 5 Mr. Woolley has them for French.

Period 6 we're going do a little mindfulness/relaxation time.

Wednesday 28 October 2020

Wednesday October 28th

Here is the plan for today.

Period 1 and 2 is literacy.  We'll read aloud another chapter of the BFG...we're almost done!  Then for reader's workshop, we'll focus on making attempts that make sense.  The students expressed a real interest to 'share their writing' for writer's workshop, which is hard to do with the current restrictions...we're going to attempt to go outside and do some sharing.

Period 3 and 4 is math.  We're going to continue on with the introduction of 'patterning'.  We've got some games to play on the smart board.

https://www.abcya.com/games/number_patterns

https://toytheater.com/number-pattern/

https://www.funbrain.com/games/number-cracker-game

Then we'll try these worksheets:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZAfUSMgE4D7Mjzaf_O2Xw39AUMPoRIgO/view?usp=sharing

https://www.dadsworksheets.com/worksheets/number-patterns/addition-patterns-0-v1.html

Period 5 is Social Studies.  We're going to take at types of land use (e.g., residential, commercial, agricultural etc...).  Then we have a land use cut and paste activity.

Period 6 Mr. Woolley comes in for French.

Tuesday 27 October 2020

Tuesday October 27th

Here is what today should look like!

Period 1 and 2 are literacy.

We'll begin the day by trying this brain scratcher:

https://cemc.math.uwaterloo.ca/resources/potw/2020-21/English/POTWA-20-NN-PA-06-P.pdf

Then for reader's workshop we'll look at 're-reading' to make sure we really think/understand.

For writer's workshop we'll focus on using 'important people' to help us generate ideas.

Period 3 and 4 we have the chromebooks.

Period 3 we'll use the chromebooks to answer some patterning questions on prodigy. Our next unit will be on patterning.

Period 4 we're going to continue working on our 'research cities' project on Google Classroom.

Period 5 Mr. Butt has the class for tech.

Period 6 we'll keep the chromebooks to finish up math and social studies.

Monday 26 October 2020

Here is the plan for today...

Period 1 we'll do a read aloud and share highlights from our weekend during weekend round up.

Period 2 will be reader's/writer's workshop.

Period 3 and 4 is math.  We'll finish up our math from last week, making change.  Then we'll try and do addition using money:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bVe1IjQP-JAYLg3CnHb0BVjkuyO_pT_S/view?usp=sharing

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BkvrTYQXammxFTnjWEVfscMczOM9Euu5/view?usp=sharing

Period 5 for social studies we'll do a partner talk about 'landform' questions (e.g., some of the biggest cities are near water, this is because...).

Period 6 Mrs. Haynes is here for music.

Friday 23 October 2020

Friday October 23rd

I wasn't here yesterday, so I'm not too sure how the day went, but I suspect great.

Today we'll begin period 1 by reading aloud and the kids can pick to read or write (or both) for reader's/writer's workshop.

Period 2 Mr. Butt will be in for technology.

Period 3 and 4 we're going to attempt to channel our inner 'Georges Seurat' and try some pointillism fall trees.

Period 5 and 6 we have the computers and we'll begin work on Google Classroom researching cities from each of the 3 different landforms in Ontario.

Have a terrific (and safe) weekend everyone!

Wednesday 21 October 2020

Wednesday October 21st

Here is the plan for today!

Period 1 and 2 is Literacy!

We'll clean and organize our desks, then listen to a chapter from the BFG.

For reader's workshop we'll focus on using words we know to help us solve words we don't know.

For writer's workshop we're going to practise 'living like someone consumed by a project'...how to invest in our writing.

Period 3 and 4 is math.

I've done a giant scavenger hunt around my room for 'counting coins'.  We did this last week...but this week it should be a little more challenging.  I've got 2 different scavenger hunts...one is easier, the other is a little more difficult.

If we have time, we'll look at making change (specifically, counting up to make change)

https://www.funbrain.com/games/change-maker - game

Period 5 we're going to do a little mindfulness...as I think we'll need a break of being inside for so long (I suspect indoor recesses).

Period 6 is Mr. Woolley for French.

Tuesday 20 October 2020

Tuesday October 20th

Here is the plan for today!

Period 1 and 2 is literacy.  We need to talk about our coat hooks...which we're now allowed to use, sort of.  We'll begin the morning at attempting to draw our best Scooby Doo.  Then for reader's workshop we're going to talk about reading slowly to really 'hear' the story in our minds.  For writer's workshop, we'll focus just on getting stuff down on our paper.

Periods 3 and 4 we have the chromebooks.  I'll be posting an assignment on Google Classroom where the kids visit and play 4 different money websites.  And they'll vote on their favourite game.  Any time left over, they'll go onto prodigy to do some more math money questions.

*the google classroom assignment has many good 'money' games to practise their skills.

Period 5 Mr. Butt comes in for some technology time.

Period 6 we'll finish up our Legend of The Vampire Scooby Doo from yesterday.

Monday 19 October 2020

Monday October 19th

Yuck..a rainy Monday...we'll try to make the best of it today.

Period 1 we'll try and get adjusted to our new seating arrangements...then we'll share the highlights of our weekends.

Period 2 Mr. Butt brought in some 'library books' for our class.  We'll each be able to take 1 and return it on Friday.  Then it will be student choice, reader's or writer's workshop.

Period 3 and 4 is math.  We're continuing to look at money.  Counting Change and making change. We'll play these games and hopefully get to these worksheets.

Period 2 -Mr. Butt is coming in to do media/tech.

Period 3 and 4 is art.  We'll look at positive and negative space and symmetry.  Then we'll try our own creations (Pumpkins maybe)https://artprojectsforkids.org/positive-negative-pumpkin/

Period 5 and 6 we have the chromebooks.  We're going to dig a little deeper on Google Classroom, looking at how things are organized by subject and some of the materials I've added to our class.  I also want to show the kids the 'recording' feature on Raz Kids and I've set up 'Dream Box' for those kids that are not as interested in Prodigy.

Thursday 15 October 2020

Thursday October 15th

 Yuck...a gross rainy Thursday...gulp!

Here is the plan today.  We'll attempt to try this week's problem of the week:

https://cemc.math.uwaterloo.ca/resources/potw/2020-21/English/POTWA-20-GS-05-P.pdf

And discuss the solution from last weeks problem.

Then we'll read aloud from The BFG.

Our Reading Mini lesson will focus 'Does It Engage Me'...reading the first page of a book to see if we're interested!

Our writing mini lesson will focus on 'writing a small bite-sized chunk at a time.

Period 3 and 4 we'll talk about how hard we worked on our math from yesterday.  Then we're going to look a little closer at Canadian money, the values and skip counting.  If we have time we'll try these worksheets (making change for up to $1.00).

https://www.mathplayground.com/interactive_hundreds_chart.html - skip counting

https://uckn.bussafety.ca/

Wednesday 14 October 2020

Wednesday October 14th

Here is the plan for today.

Periods 1 and 2 are literacy.  Although at some point we're going to get interrupted to practice our 3rd fire drill and evacuation.  So I'm not sure how much literacy we'll get to today??

Period 3 and 4 are math.  We're going to continue to work on 3 digit subtraction, with and without regrouping.  Quite a few kids still need some practise with this.

Period 5 I'm hoping to finish our 'cut and paste' job sort from yesterday...and present our findings.

Period 6 Mr. Woolley has them for French.

Tuesday 13 October 2020

Tuesday October 13th

I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing weekend.

Here is the plan for today (it's a Monday schedule)

Period 1 and 2 is literacy.  We'll start the day off with brain teaser:

https://www.transum.org/software/SW/Starter_of_the_day/starter_October12.asp

Then we'll share our weekend highlights during 'weekend round up'.  After that I'll start our next read aloud, The BFG.
Then we'll do some reading, focusing still on becoming 'engaged readers.
Writing is up next.  The mini lesson will focus on just taking 'One bite at a time'.

Period 3 and 4 I believe we have the computers.  I've got some 3 digit subtraction questions lined up on Math Prodigy.  Afterwords, I'm hoping to explore Google Earth a little more.  Looking specifically at different cities within Ontario's 3 landforms.

Period 5 is social studies.  I have a 'job sort' activity where the students will look at a job and try to figure out, which landform that occupation would take place in.
Period 6 is Mrs. Haynes for music.

Friday 9 October 2020

Friday October 9th

Here is what the plan is for today!

Period 1 we'll read aloud a short story from 'And Then It Happened' and then I'll give the kids the choice to read or write.

Period 2 Mr. Butt will teach the kids technology...maybe coding?

Period 3 and 4 we are going to start by watching the goosebumps tv episode that goes along with our read aloud 'You Can't Scare Me'.  https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4p29bv

Then we'll try to make our own monsters using construction paper for art.

Period 5 and 6 we have the chromebooks.  We'll log into google classroom and fill out a 'Movie vs. Book comparison and design our own poster/cover for the story 'You Can't Scare Me'.

I hope everyone has a good/safe long weekend!

Thursday 8 October 2020

Thursday October 8th

Here is the plan for the day (*subject to change)

Periods 1 & 2: Literacy

We'll start the day trying to make scorpions (Goosebumps related) out of play doh.  Then we'll move into reading.  We're going to reading.  We're going to review our mini lessons from the week (e.g., visualizing, asking questions and engagement).  Then we'll read.

Next we'll write.  Today's lesson will focus on 'Why we Write?  Hopefully tapping into why it is we care about our writing.

Period 3 and 4 is numeracy.  We're going to be continuing on with 3 digit subtraction.  I have a game we'll play rolling dice, and subtracting down from 999.  Then we'll try the worksheets from yesterday we didn't get time to do.

Period 5 Mr. Woolley will teach French.

Period 6 we'll do a little mindfulness, relaxation.  Then I'm going to give them this brain teaser:

https://cemc.math.uwaterloo.ca/resources/potw/2020-21/English/POTWA-20-PA-04-P.pdf

We're going to talk about how to solve problems and persevering!

Wednesday 7 October 2020

Wednesday October 7th

 Yuck...a rainy Wednesday!

Here is what I am hoping we get to today!

Period 1 and 2 -Literacy

We're going to start the day by cleaning and organizing our desks (some are pretty scary).  Then we'll read aloud.  After that we'll do a little mini lesson on 'visualizing to focus' while reading.

For writing, we're going to talk about what to do when you're stuck, and looking at mentor texts to help us generate ideas.

Period 3 and 4 -Numeracy

We're going to dig a little deeper into 3 digit subtraction (with and without regrouping).  We'll play this game on the smartboard and do many examples:

https://www.softschools.com/math/subtraction/3_digit_subtraction/3_digit_subtraction_with_regrouping/

Then I have a game where they'll roll 3 dice and make numbers to subtract.  Afterwards I'll have a couple of 3 digit subtraction worksheets...some will be a challenge and some will be a little less challenging...depending on where we are.  (I think the website is password protected, but it'll give you an idea)

challenge

https://www.superteacherworksheets.com/subtraction/subtracting-3dig_TZRRF.pdf?up=1466611200

https://www.superteacherworksheets.com/subtraction/block-subtraction_PVBSH.pdf?up=1466611200

Less challenge

https://www.superteacherworksheets.com/subtraction/block-subtraction_PVBSH.pdf?up=1466611200

I had to move some things around today, so Mr. Woolley is going to come in period 5 for French and Period 6 we'll try and catch up on some unfinished work.  Maybe a game of silent seatball if we're lucky!

Tuesday 6 October 2020

Tuesday October 6th

I generally get to work fairly early, so it's often easier for me to post in the morning...however, plans often change.  Here is what I'm hoping happens today!

Periods 1 & 2 Literacy:

We'll begin the day with this 'brain teaser'...focusing on just 'trying'!

https://www.transum.org/software/SW/Starter_of_the_day/starter_October8.asp

Then we'll read aloud from 'You Can't Scare Me'.  Then we'll talk about 'Mind over Matter' and choosing to pick books to help engage us.

For writing we'll look at breaking our writing time into smaller chunks to help us build stamina.

Periods 3 and 4 we'll be going onto Google Classroom to use a random number generator to make our own subtractions questions.  They'll be taking screenshots and manipulating them in a google drawing to solve.

Period 5 Mr. Butt has them for library tech.  I think he'll do some coding with them.

Period 6 we're going to try collaborating on Google Earth to make our own 'tour' of Ontario's landform regions.

Hopefully we'll be able to squeeze some outside time in there throughout the day!

Monday 5 October 2020

Monday October 5th

Here is what we did today:

Period 1 and 2 we started the morning by shaping our play doh into the best 'mud monsters' we could make.  Then we had our 'weekend round up', sharing highlights of our weekends.  Then we read from 'You Can't Scare Me'.  Then the kids had 15 minutes to read on their own. **We still have about 5 kids without their own books...try to remember to bring a book you enjoy to school each day**

Then we looked at this website:

http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/construct/

Before we started writing.

Periods 3 & 4 we did some math.  We looked at subtraction with regrouping...the class worked really hard, and I think we're starting to get it!  Keep practising at home!

We were able to get outside for a little fresh air in between all that work.

Period 5 we coloured in maps of the 3 landform regions of Ontario

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PY98BeiJx8azlwXWmnxfSCvfmoFZZULc/view?usp=sharing

Then we had a little time to watch some Wayside right before, Music.

Period 6 Music (with Mrs. Haynes).

It's also under 'material' inside of Google Classroom.

Teacher username is:  across9

Their passwords are just their 4 letter passwords to log into Halton Cloud.

I've set the levels ... to what I've assessed them at.  However, if you feel the books are not challenging enough (they're acing every quiz) or too hard (they're bombing every quiz) please let me know and I can adjust the levels as necessary.

I'm hoping we can practise logging in at school today...I'll also be sending home their log in cards today...

Friday October 2nd

Here is what I have planned for today:

Period 1:  We'll start the day with this brain puzzle:  https://www.transum.org/software/SW/Starter_of_the_day/starter_October3.asp

Then we'll read a loud from 'You Can't Scare Me'...focusing on asking 'good questions' while we read.

We'll also check out this website and can help with spelling: http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/construct/

Period 2 Mr. Butt has them for technology.

Period 3 and 4 we are going to do some math.  I'm going to introduce the concept of subtraction.

LEAF ART

So we changed our math to art today...because it was beautiful outside.

I was very impressed with how well the kids worked, and the masterpieces they created.

(I hope that link works)

Thursday October 1st

I'm going to try and blog early today (busy day). Here is the plan.

Period 1 & 2 is literacy.

We'll start the morning with the problem:

https://www.transum.org/software/SW/Starter_of_the_day/starter_October1.asp

Then we'll read aloud "You Can't Scare Me" Goosebumps book.  Then for reader's workshop, we're going to focus on 'asking questions to engage with the texts we're reading'.  For writer's workshop we'll focus on 'good writing is REWRITING'.  So we'll go back to some of our writing and look for ways to improve them.

Period 3 and 4 is typically math...but looking at the weather, I think we might be better to switch to art today and save our 'subtraction introduction' until tomorrow.  If it's nice out we're going to collect some leaves and make our own 'Leaf People' after reading 'Leaf Man'.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvAK2hxNFrY -leaf man

https://inspirationlaboratories.com/leaf-man-virtual-book-club-for-kids/ (samples)

Period 5 Mr. Woolley has them for French.

Period 6 will be a mindfulness period. We're going to talk about what we do to 'de-stress'. We'll do some 'Go Noodle' activities and just try and finish up some unfinished work.

Friday May 3rd

Happy Friday.  Here is the plan for today: Period 1 Red light, read aloud, and Holes blooket as a class. Period 2 we'll watch a Canadia...
