Friday October 24th

 Happy Blue Jays Day!

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud and a mini lesson adjectives.  By the end of today we'll be adjective masters.

Period 2 -Library book exchange, and STEM challenge in Tikercad...we're designing a vehicle of the future.

Period 3 we'll stay outside for a bit.  When we come in we'll continue working on our subtraction skills.

Period 4 we'll head back outside for some Andrew Goldsworthy inspired art.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1P70WIyOXKaM2BmEwd8aQjksIx_QoLYnQ?usp=sharing (here are our Goldsworthy interpretations)

Period 5 we'll do a mindfulness activity and hopefully continue on our STEM challenge.

Period 6 is gym with Mr. D.

Thursday October 23rd

That might look like 'dirt' to you...but it's actually small pieces from everyone's lunches (including cucumber, banana peels, apples, carrots, ham, cheese string, strawberries and some celery)....that came out dry and powdery from the Lomi composter after about 3 hours.  Pretty cool.  Science for the win!

Here is the plan for today:
Period 1 - Red light, read aloud, class discussion about 'free time' {yesterday wasn't pretty}, reader's workshop: lesson on 'thinking while you read the words'...basically going back to reread things when they don't make sense.
Period 2 is Writer's workshop: lesson on 'starting with a character first'.
Period 3 is Math.  I'll be introducing the concept of subtraction....hopefully it's easy (but it never is).
Period 4 is Music with Mrs. Haynes.
Period 5 and 6 I'm going to do our first Health lesson of the year (Mr. D and I had our lines crossed about who was teaching health this year...I win).  After Health, we might start our new unit in Social Studies, Living and Working in Ontario...we may also just enjoy some free time.  See if we can be a little more successful than we were yesterday??

Wednesday October 22nd

 Happy Wednesday.

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 - Red light, read aloud, and reader's workshop- lesson on 'try, try again' when solving unfamiliar words.

Period 2 -Writer's workshop- lesson on walking our world and looking at objects and deciding what they are or what they could be (e.g., walking through a restaurant, you could come up with the idea to write the owner a letter?  Or maybe the smell of a certain food triggers a memory?  Maybe you're designing a menu?)

1st Break...we have the school's Lomi composter...we're going to put our food scraps in first break and turn it on.

Period 3 is Math - we'll see what the weather is like to decide if we go outside.  We'll try the race to 1000 or 2000 game again (we never got to it yesterday)

Period 4 is Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 and 6-after second break we'll open up the Lomi and see what our leftover composted lunch scraps look like and do a little observation.

If it's nice out, we'll do some Andrew Goldworthy style nature art outside.  If it's raining, we may adapt and start a crayon resist/painting art activity using fall colours and leaves.

Tuesday October 21st

 Happy Tuesday!

I was away yesterday, so no blog, my apologies.  I'm back now!  Here is the plan:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud and a quick lesson on Verbs.

Period 2 - French with Mr. Woolley.

Period 3 and 4 is math.  We'll stay outside, weather permitting, for a bit of period 3.  When we come in we'll do some more work with 3 digit addition, with and without regrouping.  I hope to play the race to 1000 game again with dice.  I've been able to conference with everyone, and we're all great at it!  Nice work.  Hopefully Prodigy is up and running today.  I heard it was down yesterday.

Period 5 and 6 is Science.  We're going to learn all about composting...then I'm going to do a composting challenge with them (give them a list of items...they have to sort them into the correct bin eg., garbage/green or blue).

Here is the plan for today...picture day...which I forgot about!

Period 1 - Red light, read aloud, wordle -partner read or write.

Period 2 - Our next Tinkercad challenge...design the coolest cake.

Periods 3 & 4- Outside and Math.  We'll continue working on 3 digit addition with and without regrouping.   I've got a game planned called race to 1000.

Period 5 we'll do a little mindfulness...I've got a couple more entertaining (less technical) Mark Rober videos to show the class.  We'll finish up any unfinished work.

Period 6 is our last Junglesport session.

Have a terrific weekend everyone.

Thursday October 16th

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 : Red light, read aloud, wordle, and reader's workshop.  Mini lesson will focus on visualizing to keep our minds in our books...I even made book marks for the kids to help with this.

Period 2 : Writer's workshop.  Mini lesson will be about 'mapping the heart'.  Basically we'll draw a big heart and draw/write all the things that are important to us (e.g., people, places, dates, activities etc...) then we can use that as an idea bank down the road.

Period 3 and 4 is Math.  The class has done such a good job adding (with regrouping) 2 digit by 2 digit numbers.  Now we're ready to tackle 3 digit by 3 digit numbers.  I think they'll pick it up quickly.  I've got some work and some questions on Prodigy.

Period 5 is Junglesport with Mr. D.

Period 6 I've got a Tinkercad challenge for them...let's see them design a tiny piece of furniture for a tiny house....

Wednesday October 15th

Happy Friday...sort of...it's a Friday Schedule, but today is in fact Wednesday. Tomorrow, which is actually Thursday, will be a Monday schedule.  Clear as mud?

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 - Red light, read aloud, weekend round up and a Wordle challenge.  (We had to start Junglesport right away yesterday).

Period 2 -we'll watch a short Mark Rober video on making the smallest 3D printed Nerf Blaster.  We're all about 3D printing right now.  Then we'll head to the Library for book exchange.  World’s Smallest Nerf Gun Shoots an Ant

Period 3 we'll stay outside for a bit.  Then come in and play some 'addition war'.  To keep practicing our addition skills.

Period 4 I'm going to set up another addition task in the hallway.  Sort of a 'scavenger hunt' looking for different math questions and answering them.

Period 5 we'll start a soil horizons / art activity.

Period 6 we'll head to the gym for Junglesport.

Tuesday October 14th

 Here is plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, weekend round up, read aloud and class wordle.

Period 2 -French with Mr. Woolley.

Period 3 -6  we'll stay outside for a bit on our last warm day?  When we come in it's going to be 3D printing / Tinkercad exploring.

My good friend, and former EA with the school board, is coming in to teach the class about 3D printing.  We'll be learning about the TinkerCAD website and hopefully be designing our very own 3D printed key chains with our names on them.

Mr. Hummel came in last year and every kid got their very own keychain that he 3D printed for us.  A pretty awesome experience for sure!

Just a reminder, Friday (October 17th) is picture day!

Thursday October 9th

Happy 'Meet the Teacher' night.  I'll apologize in advance for smelling like BBQ'd meat.  I'll be working the grill for 2 hours before we meet.

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, reader's workshop.  Mini lesson to focus on:  Does this engage me?  (finding the right book)

Period 2 is writer's workshop.  Mini lesson to focus on 'observing closely' the details in everyday object that might open a story idea.

Period 3 we'll stay outside for a bit.  When we come in we'll continue to work on some addition with regrouping.  I'll show them how to use an open number line to help solve problems (as well as review expanded form to help us add).

Period 4 is Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 is Science-y/Art - we'll be making some art ripping paper to replicate the different layers/horizons of soil (e.g. top soil, bedrock, organic ).

Period 6 we'll clean up our work areas (to get ready for tonight) and we'll have some time on the computers...hopefully.

Wednesday October 8th

 Happy Cross Country day!

According to my math, we have 13, maybe 14 kids participating...which means we'll have 5, maybe 6 kids here (if everyone shows up).  I don't think I'll press forward with any new content....we'll spend this day working on some math, practicing our addition.  We'll do some art, maybe watch some Scooby Doo (my personal favourite) and having some fun.  I won't even bother posting the schedule as I'm sure we'll be moving things around all day.

Good luck cross country runners!

Wednesday October 1st

 What?  October already?  Crazy!

Since it's the first of the month, we did our monthly seating swap.  I went with a giant box around the carpet and alternated between boy and girl...the class took it like a bunch of champs...

Period 1 was read aloud, and reading.  Our mini lesson was all about staying engaged in your book...then we had Charlie, Beatrix and Big Mac all demonstrated what both those scenarios would look like.

Period 2 was writer's workshop.  The mini lesson today was all about fighting the 'writer's block' voice in our head.   I shared some fun / gross recipes I made (trying to tap into some of my reluctant writer's).  I had the Big Mac, the Mav-dog, Charlie-tatoes, Zoe Smoothie and Gorilla Pie.  Each recipe was grosser than the last.

Period 3 we stayed outside for a bit, then we came in and practice doing some 2 digit addition with Re-grouping. We're starting to get it.

Period 4 (now) they're in music class with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 is art...we'll be doing some 'leaf rubbings'.

Period 6 we'll finish off our art and hopefully move into some free time.

Friday October 24th

Happy Blue Jays Day! Here is the plan for today: Period 1 -Red light, read aloud and a mini lesson adjectives.  By the end of today we'...
