Friday November 20th

 I was away yesterday, but Mrs. Sylvester was in for me and she told me numerous times how awesome my class was!  Always great to hear.

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, Read aloud, Reader's Writer's workshop- Still doing more quotation mark work.

Period 2 -Library is closed for Book Fair set up...so we'll stay here and have some reading or writing with a partner.

Period 3 is math.  We'll do some repeating patterns work...I have mild and Spicy...hoping to push the kids to try Spicy (more advanced) work.

Period 4 we have the chromebooks for Math prodigy - more patterning work!

Period 5 is Free time -I think they've earned it this week!

Period 6 is Gym with Mr. D.

Wednesday November 19th

 Yikes...I forgot about my post yesterday...sorry!  Life has been busy.  Progress reports went home on Monday...We adopted a 3 legged rescue cat yesterday...my brain isn't working at full power.


Here is what the plan for today is:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, class discussion about respect and inclusion.  Reader's workshop on juggling while reading...ask your kids!

Period 2 -Writer's workshop: mini lesson on using quotation marks properly. 

Period 3 we stayed outside most of the period, came in and review repeating patterns.

Period 4 is Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 I'm going to do some patterning centres hopefully.  Make different repeating patterns with different manipulatives.

Period 6 I have some mindfulness colouring activity we'll try.

Monday November 17th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1- Red light, read aloud, weekend round up.

Period 2 I've got some funny comics we're going to write the speaking parts for.

Period 3 is outside/math - when we come in we'll finish making our bar/picto graphs.

Period 4 is I'm hoping to do some prodigy questions.

Period 5 is gym with Mr. D.

Period 6 is Health, from last week, which we skipped because it turns out Health is the least favourite subject at school (according to Isla and Maddy's survey).

Friday November 14th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, Read aloud, and activity on Pronouns.

Period 2 -Library/book exchange 

Period 3 and 4 -outside (for a bit)/Math - we'll be wrapping up our math unit on graphing, the kids are hopefully going to conduct a survey and make 2 graphs today...a bar and a picto...and write about them.

Period 5 is Health, we'll learn about safe drinking water.

Period 6 is Gym with Mr. D.

How good does their art look?  I love this class.  I give them an idea...and do a 'terrible teacher sample' then they elevate it and make it their own!

Here is the plan for today:
Period 1 Red light, read aloud, reader's workshop: Reader's notice how characters respond to problems...we'll use Because of Winn Dixie for this.
Period 2 Writer's workshop: Writer's show how character's feel through dialogue and action. 

Period 3 we'll stay outside for a bit.  When we come in we'll talk about choosing the right kind of graph (e.g., Bar vs Picture), based on the data.  I've got several tables of data that they'll discuss with groups which graph would make most sense to use and why.
Period 4 is Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 and 6 is social studies. We'll continue with living and working in Ontario.  Now that the students understand the land (e.g., Hudson's bay, Great Lakes, Canadian Shield) we'll talk about how People organize themselves on that land (e.g., Rural, Urban and Suburban).  I have a cut and paste activity where the kids have to sort based upon those 3 categories (e.g., skyscraper = urban).

Wednesday November 12th

 I just realized I didn't post yesterday...oops!  We had fun, we did stuff.   


Here is the plan for today:

Period 1: Red light, read aloud, reader's workshop: lesson on how quotation marks help us 'read better'.

Period 2: Writer's workshop.  We'll practice putting in the proper punctuation into some dialogue and hopefully use some of it in our own writing.

Period 3: we'll go outside for a bit, weather dependent.  When we come in I've got another worksheet where the kids have to make a bar graph and answer some questions.

Period 4: Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 and 6 is Art. We'll be using chalk pastels today to make some birch trees in the winter to celebrate the first snow fall this year.  They will hopefully look something like this:

Monday November 10th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, weekend round up

Period 2 -Partner or alone reading or writing.

Period 3 outside for snow fun.

Period 4 Math, we did some more work on pictographs.

Period 5 is gym.

Period 6 is Health. I have a quick 'fire safety' lesson.  When we're done that we'll have some finish up/unplugged free time.

Friday November 8th

 Happy Friday!

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 - Red light, read aloud, reader's workshop- I've got another 'class script' to show how we can capture a characters emotions via dialogue (e.g., Aleks whispered, “I think there’s something under the bed…”)

Period 2 -we'll head to the library for book exchange. I also have posted a parts of speech game on classroom where we'll learn about adverbs. After we're done that, they can work on their adjective awards.

Period 3 we'll stay outside of a bit. When we come back in we'll talk about pictographs (https://www.mathsisfun.com/data/pictographs.html).

Period 4 if they finish the work I have, they'll go onto Prodigy and answer some pictograph questions.

Period 5 I've got a STEM challenge where I'll put the kids into groups and they'll work together to build the tallest tower out of Spaghetti noodles and marshmallows.

Thursday November 6th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 - Red light, read aloud, and more work on how characters (I've got a class script) can show emotion through dialogue.

Period 2- More using quotation marks properly work.  

Period 3 -I found the math worksheet I misplaced yesterday (the kids seemed very happy about it yesterday), so we'll do that...tally marks and reading a graph.

Period 4 is Music. 

Period 5 and 6 is Social Studies.  We're going to design our own community (e.g., Cross-ville, in the Canadian Shield).  They'll have to write and draw about the natural features (e.g., hills, forests, lakes) and human features (e.g., cabins, tourism).  It should be fun.

Wednesday November 5th

 I just realized I never actually 'published' yesterday's blog...my apologies.

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -we solved a cool patterning puzzle that forced us to count to and fro...then we read Because of Winn Dixie, with a focus on how dialogue helps us to understand characters better.  We really focused on what Mrs. Franny Block and India Opal said, and discovered we learned a lot about both of them.

Period 2 we continued our 'quotation focus' by doing a worksheet where the kids had to put the quotation marks in the right place and use the comma properly...I think we're starting to get it.

Period 3, is Music, for today only, I forgot I had agreed to move music around to help Mrs. Raspopov out.  

Period 4, since I accidentally teased the kids with some outside time Period 3, I'll take them out Period 4 for a bit.  Then we'll do some more 'Data management' work.  Talking about what Data is (information we collect), and review tally marks.  

Period 5 and 6 is art.  We're going to talk movement and texture to hopefully work together to create a giant falling leaves in motion mural.  

Tuesday November 4th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -Red light, read aloud, finish up our quotation mark work from yesterday.

Period 2-French

Period 3 and 4 -Outside hopefully?  We missed it yesterday.  When we come back in we'll begin our next unit on Graphing (Data Management).

Period 5 we'll show off our awesome landform region maps we made of plasticine. Landform Regions (check them out).  Then we'll do a cut and paste activity where I give them a series of jobs and they have to sort them into the appropriate landform region (e.g., 'Airport Security = Great Lakes/St Lawerence, Nickel Mining = Canadian Shield,

Monday November 3rd

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 - Seating Swap (it's the start of a new month).  Read aloud, we'll start a new book. Because of Winn Dixie (there's a movie too).

Period 2 we're going to talk about using quotation marks for direct speech.

Period 3 we'll stay outside for a bit before we come in and continue on with our 3 digit subtraction, with regrouping.

Period 4 if there is time after our work, they might jump on Prodigy.

Period 5 is gym with Mr. D.

Period 6 we'll do a little breathing exercise to come down after gym, then we'll finish our landform regions Plasticine work from last week.
