October 30th

So far so good today!

Here is what we've done or are about to do.

Period 1 for Red Light, we came up with a list of rules to stay safe tomorrow night.  Then we had reader's workshop.
Period 2 was writer's workshop.  Our mini lesson was on persuading people with facts (we discussed whether or not zoo's were a good idea).

Period 3 we played a round of skunk...old school.  We used actual dice instead of the 'digital dice' on the Smartboard...just to see if that made a difference (some kids think it does, others don't?)
Period 4 Mr. Butt is working with them in library.

Period 5 we have the gym and the pickleball kit is still here.  We'll continue to work on our skills.
Period 6 I'm going to give them some more time to work on their math games...hopefully print out our rules/instructions.

Tuesday October 29th

Here is what today should look like!

Period 1 is reader's workshop.  The mini lesson will look at solving words using common conventions (e.g., when 2 vowels go walking...the first one does the talking and the 'pushy e' as in the word lakE makes the vowel say it's name)
Period 2 is writer's workshop.

Period 3 is Music with Mrs. Haynes.
Period 4 we'll play a couple of rounds of SKUNK.  If there is time we'll briefly discuss our next unit in Social Studies (living and working in Ontario).

Period 5 is math.  I was going to start our next unit on Patterning, but I think we'll need some more time to finish our subtraction games.
Period 6 we have the computers.  I'm hoping everyone will get a chance to finish typing out their math game instructions.

October 10th - the big day

We finished the BFG today.

And to celebrate, I went to Giant Country last night on my way home and was able to pick up a bottle of Frobscottle.

I think something happened during the journey, because suddenly these bubbles are 'fizzing up, instead of down'.

We had reader's writer's workshop the first 2 periods.
Period 3 we'll start the original (old school cartoon) BFG movie...and try out some Frobscottle.
Period 4 they have French with Mr. Woolley.

I hope everyone has a fantastic long weekend.  See you Tuesday!

Pretty Cool

So we've been working on soil for awhile now.

We know that soil is made up of Sand (big/heavy) particles, Silt (medium sized particles) and Clay (smallest particles) and Humus (organic matter).

After 5 days our soils have settled and separated into the different particles!

October 9th

Here is what we're doing today.

Period 1 we read a long chapter of the BFG...only 2 left!  Then we had our reader's workshop.  The mini lesson focussed on Reader's using more than 1 strategy to figure out a word.

Period 2 is writer's workshop.  The mini lesson is on 'acting things out to help us write it down'.

Period 3 we're going to have Science.  We will be sketching our soil samples as they've begun to separate.

Period 4 Mr. Butt has them for Library/technology.

Period 5 we have the gym...we're going to continue to work on cooperative games and improving our sportsmanship.

Period 6 I have the chromebooks booked and I hope to show the kids some fun 'subtraction games' on this website:

Might be fun way to practise at home!

October 8th (Raz Kids info)

Today should be...different?  I think we have 15 out of 20 participating in Cross Country.  So I don't want to go too far ahead without the majority of the class.

Period 1 and 2 will be reader's/writer's workshop.

Period 3 is music.
Period 4 we'll use to finish up any outstanding work.

Period 5 and 6 we're going to continue working on subtraction.  I'm hoping to get the chromebooks at some point today too.

NOTE:  We just got our licence for 'RAZ kids'.  The kids all know their passwords are the 4 letter passwords they use to log onto the Halton Cloud.

The teacher user name is : across9
*you might want to book mark the website...there is also an app to make it 'tablet friendly' too!

I don't give a lot of homework, but everyone should be reading at least 20 minutes a day.  Raz kids a great resource...especially for those reluctant readers.

If you're finding your child's level too hard or too easy, let me know and I can move the level up or down accordingly.

Tuesday October 1st

Happy October...and happy seat swapping day.

We did our great seating swap 1st period.  We used the 'random number generator' to keep things fair.  I try to switch the seats on the first of each month...so the kids can get used to working in a variety of groups and with a variety of partners.

Period 2 we left for reader's/writer's workshop (student choice).

Period 3 Mrs. Haynes is taking them outside for music.

Period 5 we're going to finish up some 2 digit addition with regrouping for math...early finishers will get to play some other math games I have.

Period 6 we have the chromebooks again, we're going to talk about 'Internet safety' and play Google's Interland game:
