 Woohoo!  We made it....last day of Grade 3 in 2022!

It's going to be an extremely heavy day today...need to cram in the maximum amount of learning on the last day.

Wednesday December 21sth

 Period 1 and 2 - reader's/writer's workshop/slash work on top secret gift. 

Period 3 and 4 -play outside and computer buddies with our Grade 1/2 friends.

Period 5 is Sing along with Madam O'Neil.

Period 6 is Library/finish up Rise of the Gaurdians

Short but sweet.

Tuesday December 20th

 Only 3 more days left before break...we're trying our best to keep it together...but it's hard!

Period 1 - Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 2 -Read aloud, then we'll brainstorm as a class and make an acrostic poem for Mrs. Alvarez, as a thank you for helping us write this year.

Period 3 and 4 - we'll stay outside for a bit.  Then when we come in we'll look at the differences between prisms and pyramids.  And how they're named.  I have a bit of work for the class to do, then we'll answer some question on prodigy.

Period 5 -Mrs. Alvarez is coming in, and we'll work on Holiday cards for our families. 

Period 6 -we'll continue to work on our maps and maybe watch a bit more of 'Rise of the Guardians'.  

Monday December 19th

 Last week of school before the break!

Period 1 we'll do a fun 'brain teaser' to start the day.  I'll read The Twits and we'll share our weekends during weekend round up.

Period 2 is Reader's/Writer's workshop - student choice.

Period 3 is Gym with Mr. D.

Period 4 is math.  We'll learn all about angles. Less than, bigger then and right angles.

Period 5 and 6 we'll continue working on our own city maps.

Friday December 16th

 Last Friday of 2022 (in school).

The kids are a bit squirrel-ly...and by 'a bit', I mean a lot!

Period 1 and 2 Reader's Writer's workshop - student choice.  We read a little 'The Twits' and looked at the New York Times' 'What Is Happening In This Picture'.  Then the kids wrote and read for the rest of the period.

Period 3 we'll stay outside with the other 2 Grade 3 classes.  

Period 4 we'll come in and finish watching the BFG.

Period 5 is Health with Mr. D.

Period 6 is finish up the art from yesterday.

Thursday December 14th

 Missing quite a few kids today...maybe illness? Maybe no busses? Maybe already left for Holidays?  Who knows?

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -we made funny Mr. Cross Acrostic Poems.  Then we read aloud The Twits.  Then it was reader's workshop with a mini lesson that focused on 'cover and slide' to solve unfamiliar words.

Period 2 is writer's workshop.  After we finish our newspaper article templates, we'll use the chromebooks (if they choose to)...hopefully start writing articles.

Period 3 is Math.  We'll do this work on Quadrilaterals:

Wednesday December 14th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 reader's workshop - we'll be looking at the strategy of 'breaking a word apart'.  

Period 2 is writer's workshop -we will continue with 'newspaper article' writing.

Period 3 is math.  We'll look at classifying different types of quadrilaterals.

Monday December 12th

 Here is what we did today.

Period 1 we had our weekend round up.  

Period 2 we did a little Winter Art (thanks Mrs. D for the idea).

Period 3 I got to take the kids to the gym for some inside gym class.

Period 5 and 6 we'll stay outside for a bit.  Then we'll come in and take up our social studies activity from last week (different ways we use the land eg., agricultural, industrial, commercial, residential etc...). Then we'll make our own maps.  

If we have any time at the end of the day we might start watching the BFG (the newer version) just to compare it to both the book and the 'old school' animated version.

Friday December 9th

 Ahh...the post concert come down day!

We're going to keep it light today.

Periods 1 and 2 is reader's/writer's workshop, student choice.  I'm hoping we can all finish our 'About Me' books.  

Periods 3 and 4 we'll stay outside for a little while with the other Grade 3's.  When we come in we'll watch the animated version of The BFG.

Period 5 is Gym with Mr. D.

Period 6 we'll finish our movie and hopefully enjoy a little free time before the weekend.

Thursday December 8th

 Here it is...the day of the performance.

This is what our day looks like.  

Period 1 we read The BFG and then moved into reader's workshop...no mini lesson today.  

Period 2 we rehearsed our song in the gym.  

Period 3 we came inside, played a round of 'I Have, Who Has'.  We destroyed our record from yesterday...I think everyone in our class can confidently read an analogue clock!  After that I introduced our next unit, geometry.  

Period 4 they had 'music' with Ms. Pinnington.  I believed they played some Math Prodigy and consolidated some of the 2D shape learning we covered in math class.

Period 5 and 6 is the matinee  performance...so we're kind of on 'stand by' until we're called to the gym.  We'll be spending that time doing a little 'art' and decorating our door for the door decorating challenge the social committee has set up.

Remember, the night time performance is from 6:30-7:30 PM.  I'll be in the class around 6 PM to supervise the kids...I look forward to seeing you tonight...if you're able to come.

Wednesday December 7th

 Here is our day today:

Periods 1 & 2 is our chance to watch the Holiday concert while 'cast b' has their dress rehearsal.

Periods 3 and 4 is math.  We'll play the 'I Have, Who Has' time game.  Then we'll use the chromebooks for some more time games.

Period 5 is French

Tuesday December 6th

 Here is what we did today.

Period 1 -Music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 2 -Reader's workshop, we learned about how to look ahead and read ending punctuation.

Period 3 we stayed outside with both of the other Grade 3 classes.

Period 4 we did some more 'time' math.

Period 5 we'll do some 'writer's workshop'.  We'll look at newspaper articles, and plan our own.

Period 6 we'll finish our social studies, how we use the land (e.g., commercial, residential, industrial, recreational, conservation) and then play a little 'sim city' to design our own towns.

Friday December 2nd

 Ha...I can't believe I haven't blogged since Tuesday...since I'm not sure anyone reads these anyway, probably not a huge deal?  My apologies...busy week.

Periods 1&2 -we'll do a math activity for 'red light'.  Then we'll try to use book creator to create our own 'about me books'. While they're doing this I'll be conferencing with some of the kids that are struggling with reading analogue clocks.

Period 3 and 4 is math.  We'll stay outside a little extra period 3 then come in and do more work on telling the time.  This is the work we'll do:

Monday November 28th

 I apologize for missing the blog on Thursday...crazy days with interviews and book fairs!

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 we'll do a red light activity, then read aloud, then weekend round up.

Period 2 will be reader's/writer's workshop, student choice.

Period 3 is gym with Mr. D.

Period 4 is math.  We'll look at bar graphs, how to read and create them.

Period 5 is social studies.  We've covered Great Lakes/St. Lawerence lowlands and the Hudsons's Bay lowlands.  Today we'll look at the last landform in Ontario, the Canadian shield.  

Period 6 we'll leave open to finish any unfinished work.  

Wednesday November 23rd

 Is it Friday yet?

Here is what our day has looked like (which is quite different than what I had planned).  Book Fairs, Canadian Soccer!!

Period 1 we did a little memorization activity to start the day.  Then we had out 'book fair' shopping time.  

Period 2, when we finally got back from the book fair we couldn't do anything but read and write in our new purchases.  So we did that for the whole period.

Period 3 it was so nice outside...so we ended up staying outside for most of the period. 

Period 4 we had our reading buddies with Mrs. Evers' class.  We played some fun word games posted on the Classroom. 

Period 5 is French with Mrs. O'Neil.  

Period 6 we'll put the Canada vs. Belgium world cup game on while try to do some math work...'try' being the key word.  We'll hopefully do the 'picto graph' work from yesterday we never got around to.

Tuesday November 22nd

 Here is the plan for today...

Period 1 -music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 2-Read aloud, reader's workshop. Mini lesson focuses on 'using what you know'.

Period 3 is Math.  We'll look at both vertical and horizontal pictographs.  How to read and create them.

Period 4 is our turn to preview the book fair (TOMORROW WE CAN PURCHASE). 

Period 5 is writer's workshop.  We'll look at starting with a character to help us begin our stories.

Period 6 is finish up.

Monday November 21st

 Yes!  Back in class...and hopefully a little stability?

Here is the plan for today.

Period 1 -read aloud and weekend round up

Period 2 -student choice reader's/writer's workshop.

Period 3 and 4 is math.  We'll look at collecting data and the difference between discreet and continous data. 

Period 5 and 6 is social studies.  We'll look at the Hudsons Bay Lowlands and some of the jobs in that area. Any extra time we have will be free time.

Friday November 18th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 & 2 we'll read aloud the BFG, get our 'book talk' about the book fair and have reader's/writer's workshop (student choice).

Period 3 & 4 is math.  We're going to do the Mean and Mode work from yesterday...after we're done our work I've set up a bunch of mean and mode questions on math prodigy.

Period 5 is gym with Mr. D.

Period 6 will be a finish up/free time period.

Thursday November 17th

Apparently I forgot to post yesterday...oops...sorry!

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 is read aloud, and reader's workshop.  Mini lesson focusing on using diagraphs and blends (grouping letters together).

Period 2 is writer's workshop. The mini lesson will focus on 'starting with a character', as a strategy to help us start writing.

Period 3 is math.  After a healthy mask break we'll come inside and learn about the Mean and Mode of data...it'll be a hard concept to grasp, but we'll use calculators to help us calculate averages (mean).

Period 4 is music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 and 6 is art.  We'll be looking at Andy Warhol, and trying to re-create his 'pop art' style with our own donuts or cupcakes.

Tuesday November 15th

Well yesterday we started with only 7 away and by the end of the day we were at 9 away.  Something nasty is making it's way through our class.

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 we'll start off with this brain teaser:

Period 5 Mrs. Alvarez is coming back in with her engaging writing prompts and going to continue to inspire our enjoyment of writing.

Period 6 Mrs. Haynes is going to take them for music (normally it's period 1, but she wanted to switch because of the assembly.

Monday November 14th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 we'll do a weekend round up share.  

Period 2 we'll have reader's/writer's workshop, student choice.

Period 3 is gym with Mr. D

Period 4 is math, we'll look at different ways to sort data, by attributes and in carroll diagrams.

Period 5 and 6 we'll use the chromebooks to play a blooket on the Tale of Desperaux and then do some coding on Code.org.

Fingers crossed me have a few more students this week!

Friday November 11th

 Wow...we are seriously short handed today.  Missing 8 kids.  Something is making it's way through our classroom. 

Here is the plan for today.

Period 1 we shared some cool photos from Reid and Zak.  Pictures of their great-grandparents.  We discussed Remembrance day, and why we wear the poppy.  Then I read a couple of chapters of The Tale of Desperaux.

Period 2 was spent doing reader's/writer's workshop.  Student choice.

Period 3 and 4 we'll finish our Class novel, then begin the Movie, The Tale of Desperaux.

Period 5 is Gym with Mr. D.

Period 6 we'll finish up the movie and any unfinished work we may have (e.g., poppy art, kandinsky circles). Any extra time will be free time.

Thursday November 10th

 I was away yesterday...but I'm back today.

Here is the plan for the day.

Period 1 and 2 we did a math brain teaser about ice-cream to start the day.  Then we read "I Wanna Iguana" and talked about persuasive writing.  Then we tried our own persuasive writing.  The rest of the time we had for reading or writing.

Period 3 is math.  We'll look at different ways to sort objects (using 2 or more attributes).

Period 4 is music.

Period 5 and 6 is Art.  We are going to work on some Remembrance day art using water colours.  I got the idea from this website:

Tuesday November 8th

 Crazy days...

Here is the plan for our 'normal' day.

Period 1 - Music with Mrs. Haynes

Period 2 is Weekend Round Up.  Reader's Workshop.  Mini lesson focusing on 'thinking while you read'.

Period 3 we'll stay outside with some of the other Grade 3's for a bit.  Then we'll come in and do math.  We'll look at how a table of values can be used to help you solve patterns.

Period 4 we'll use the chromebooks to log into Epic Reading (I was getting ready for virtual...thought I would show them just in case this happens again).

Period 5 is writer's workshop.  We'll look at 'writing to change the world'...finding topic that matter to us.

Period 6 is social studies.  Hopefully most people brought back their white duo tangs and we can begin learning about living and working in Ontario!

Friday November 4th

 Here is the plan for today...

Period 1 we're going to do some social studies to start the day.  We'll look at Canada, the provinces and territories.  Then we'll look at the different landforms and the way we use the land in Ontario.

Period 2 we'll have reader's/writer's workshop.  They will get to work with partners. 

Period 3 Mrs. Pinnington will come into cover my class and take them outside.

Period 4 we'll do some more work with growing and shrinking patterns. 

Period 5 is gym/health with Mr. D.

Period 6 is left open for finish up Friday (art, math, social studies).  

Note...next week is still up in the air.  Please be patient while we figure this all out (online and in person teaching/learning).

Thursday November 3rd

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -reader's workshop- mini lesson is on how reader's use many strategies to solve words.

Period 2 is writer's workshop -we're going to review using our senses again to inspire writing.  

Period 3 is math.  We'll do an Esti-mystery then do some work with growing and shrinking patterns.

Period 4 is music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 and 6 is art.  We'll look at the artist Wassily Kandinsky and try to use pastels to create some concentric circles in his style.

Tuesday November 1st

 I was away on Friday, and yesterday was...well...Halloween, and busy.  Sorry for the lack of posts.

Here is plan today (the come down after Halloween).

Period 1 is music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 2 is seating swap and Reader's workshop.  The focus is on 'try, try again' to solve unfamiliar words. 

Period 3 and 4 is math.  We'll look a little more closely at both growing and shrinking patterns.  After our work, we'll answer some more patterning questions on Prodigy.

Period 5 is Writer's workshop. Our mini lesson will focus on 'observing closely' (using our senses) to help us write.  

Period 6 I'm leaving open as a finish up /candy crash period.  

Thursday October 27th

 Here is the plan for today!

Period 1 we need to go back to the library and clean up our mess from yesterday...then we'll do reader's workshop.  We'll talk about words we know to help us solve unfamiliar words (we missed this yesterday).

Period 2 is writer's workshop.  We'll talk about using moments with strong feelings to help us generate ideas.

Period 3 we'll go outside looking for patterns, and really try to define what a pattern is.

Period 4 is music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 is art...we'll work on Frankenstien's in the style of Picasso.

Period 6 we're supposed to head outside to plant some trees and bushes. 

Wednesday October 26th

 Oops....I guess I forgot to post yesterday...sorry.  Busy days.

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 - Reader's workshop.  Our mini lesson will focus on using words we know to help us decode.

Period 2 - Writer's workshop.  Our mini lesson will focus on using people you know to help you write.

Period 3 I've posted some growing/shrinking/repeating work on Math Prodigy.

Period 4 is our first 'reading buddies' with Mrs. Ever's class.  We'll help them log into google classroom. Then we'll show them how to use the silk website.

Period 5 is French with Mrs. O'Neil.

Period 6 we'll head to the library with Mr. Butt's class. 

Monday October 24th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 we'll do red light/patterning activity to start the day.  Then we'll read from The Tale of Desperaux.  After that we'll do 'weekend round up'. 

Period 2 will be student choice for reader's/writer's workshop.  

Period 3 is gym with Mr. D.

Period 4 is math.  We'll go 'shopping' at TCBY and see what we can buy for 15 dollars.

Period 5 and 6 -we'll stay outside with the other Grade 3's for a bit.  When we come in we'll look at the force of friction.  Any extra time at the end of the day will be for some free time. 

Friday October 21st

 Sorry I've been sick and unable to blog the last couple of days. 

Today we (ME) took it easy.  Period 1 and 2 we figured out Roman numerals and had reader's/writer's workshop.  

Period 3 and 4 we stayed outside for a bit and come inside to enjoy some free time.  

Period 5 we had health with Mr. D.

Period 6 we had as a finish up/free time period.

Wednesday October 19th

 I won't be in today....I'm losing my voice and my throat is sore.

Tuesday October 18th

Period 2 the CYC is coming in early to do her third lesson on empathy/kindness (she usually comes period 6)

Period 3/4 is Math.  Today is the day we will actually get to the 'counting coins' work from Wednesday that we just haven't got around to finishing.  If we finish that we'll hop on the chromebooks and do some money questions I've set up on Math prodigy.

Thursday October 13th

 Here is the plan for today!

Period 1 is read aloud, and reader's workshop.  We're going to practise logging into spark reading once again.

Period 2 is writer's workshop.  I'll hand out their personal wordbooks today and we'll discuss how to use them.

Period 3 is math.  We talked about counting coins and played some games in class yesterday but never actually got to the work.  So we'll do yesterday's work.

 Here is the plan for today! (Monday Schedule)

Period 1 is reader's workshop.  Our mini lesson will focus on 'visualizing to focus'.  If there is time I'd like to get the chromebooks and show the kids how to log onto 'spark reading' for the kids that prefer to read 'electronically'.

Period 2 is writer's workshop.  I'll be giving the kids their own personal word books/dictionaries.  We'll discuss how to use them and add to them.

Period 3 they have gym with Mr. D.

Period 3 and 4 we'll stay outside for a bit before we come in and start working on our Financial literacy unit for math.  Today we'll just be learning how to count money.

Thursday October 6th

 Here is the plan for today!

Period 1 is reader's workshop.  Our mini lesson will be on 'visualizing to help us focus'.

Period 2 is writer's workshop.  Our mini lesson is all about making writing a habit.

Period 3 is math.  We'll finish up our subtraction scavenger hunt from the other day and do some more subtraction work.

Period 4 is music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 5 and 6 is art.  I was planning on painting and studying Georges Seurat style of pointilism...but I'm a bit worried about my class being a disaster before Open House, so I may change the plans to CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN.

Period 1 -we'll make my daughter some birthday cards for her 11th birthday today for RED light.  Then Ms. O Neil will come in to teach French (because we'll be away period 5).

Period 2 will be readers'/writer's workshop -student choice.

Period 3 we'll finish up our scavenger hunt subtraction math from yesterday and eat a quick snack before we leave four our field trip.

Period 4 and 5 we'll be walking to the Burlington Public Library and walking back.

Period 6 I suspect we'll get back around the start of Period 6.  We'll spend the rest of the time finishing our snack and enjoying a little free time.

Tuesday October 4th

 Quick blog today...

Period 1 music with Mrs. Haynes.

Period 2 reader's workshop - choosing engagement...hopefully some seatball.

Period 3 and 4 is math.  We'll play outside for a bit, then come in and do a subtraction scavenger hunt I've set up around the room.

Period 5 is writer's workshop.  We'll look at why we write.

Period 6 the CYC is coming in to do her next lesson on Empathy and Kindness.

REMINDER - tomorrow is our walking field trip to the Burlington Public Library.  Dress appropriately!

Monday October 3rd.

 Today is cross country (and I forgot I've been asked to help).

So I'll be going with the cross country team this morning.  The rest of my students will be split between Mrs. Benison and Mr. Butt's classes.

Hoping we'll be bak around period 4.  We'll hopefully do our 'weekend round up' and seating change this afternoon.  We'll hopefully continue to work on 3 digit subtraction with regrouping.  And by the end of the day we'll probably be exhausted and enjoy a bit of free time.

Friday September 30th

 Here is the plan for today.

Period 1 and 2 we'll do some Orange Shirt day activities and talk about what Orange Shirt Day really means.  We'll look at the CBC website as a class: What is Orange Shirt Day? | Articles | CBC Kids

Period 3 and 4 is math. We'll continue digging into subtraction with regrouping. We'll finish our work from yesterday, then I've got a lot of subtraction activities on Math prodigy and Google Classroom for the early finishers.

Period 5 is gym with Mr. D.

Period 6 will be a finish up/free time period before the weekend.

Thursday September 15th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 - I had an 'in-school' meeting so Ms. Pinnington covered 'Reader's Workshop'.  The mini lesson focused of finding your 'perfect reading spot'. 

Period 2 - I'll be back in class Period 2 for writer's workshop.  I'll try to inspire them to write by sharing some funny jokes.  Hopefully some of the reluctant writer's can go back and write their own jokes.

Period 3 we'll stay outside for a bit.  When we come in we'll actually do the work I had planned 3 days ago!  Rolling dice and making numbers using base ten blocks.

Period 4 Ms. O'Neil has them for French.

Period 5 we'll stay outside for a little extra time, then we'll do the cubist trees from last week.  We'll talk about what cubism is, then try to attempt this art:

Wednesday September 14th...

 What a busy day...I'm ready for a nap.  

Lots to blog about.

1- Field trip forms are coming home tonight.  The office sort of messed up our forms, so I asked the class to modify them with me....Just to be clear, we're going to Burlington Public Library on October 5th.  We'll be walking there (Aldershot branch).  The forms are BLUE.

2. Friday they're asking the kids to bring a Toonie for Terry.  

3. Sending home a pink 'weekly lunch' form with the youngest or only kids too.

Here is what we did today.

Period 1- We read aloud.  Then we fixed the permission form.  After that, we had reader's workshop, where we talked about 'if you don't know, guess' with unfamiliar words.

Period 2 was writer's workshop.  We continued to build stamina.

Period 3 we stayed outside for a bit.  Then we came in and tried another take of willoughby wallaby woo:  Townsend Ave 2.m4a

So Tuesdays Period 1 they have music...which means this will be my only time to blog today (before I even see them).

Period 2 we'll do 'reader's workshop', focusing on building stamina, with a mini lesson on 'going back and rereading' when something doesn't make sense.

Period 1 we did our first 'weekend round up' where we sit in a giant circle and share the highlights (or lowlights) of our weekends.  

Period 2 we sang 'the walking song' before we had reader's/writer's workshop (student choice) while I read with kids at the blue table.

Period 3 (now) Mr. D has the class in the gym.

Period 4 if it stops raining we'll try to get outside for some fresh air.  After that we'll do a little math.  Try and shake the rust off and practise our doubles and near doubles..  Here is the work we'll do:

 Friday?  We made it!

What a great week.  Thanks for raising such great kids.

Period 1- we read aloud (Sideways Stories From Wayside School).  Then we practised reading with partners (Elbows to Elbows, Knees to Knees). 

Period 2 -we went outside because it was so beautiful.  Then we came inside and practised building our 'writing stamina'.  

Period 3 we did another 'Esti' mystery and played a class game of Sum it Up.

Period 4 we had our first assembly.

Period 5 Mr. DeStephanis is teaching the first gym lesson of the day.

Period 6 we using the computers for the first time.  We'll log into google classroom and join our class.  Then hopefully enjoy a bit of free time!

Thursday September 8th

 It's only period 4...but already another great day!

Period 1 we did a fun math activity to get our brains ready for the day:

Then we read a chapter of Wayside School.  Then we did reader's workshop, continuing to build stamina.  We broke our record from yesterday, 12:53 seconds. 

Period 2 we attempted Willoughby Wallaby Woo...and I recorded it...but I think we can still do better.  Keep tuning in.  Then we did our first writer's workshop.  We wrote for 10 minutes, trying to develop stamina.

Wednesday September 7th

 Another great day almost in the books!

Here is what we did today:

Period 1: We played the 'blanket game', reviewed some school and class rules.  We talked about how "fair isn't always equal".  Then we tried to build up our independent reading stamina.  

Period 2 we sang 'Herman the Worm' then did a quick 10 word spelling test to see how the kids spell.  

Period 3 we stayed outside for a bit of extra time.  Then we came in and tried to sing some Raffi songs (it wasn't a big hit).  After that we did an esti(mation) mystery.

Period 4 we worked on warm and cool colour name tags.  

Period 5 Madam O'Neil taught them French. 

Period 6 we had a bit of free time before we went to the library.

 Hi everyone,

Welcome to the blog.  If your kids are anything like my own, your dinnertime conversations go something like this:

Parent:  How was school today?

Child: Fine.

Parent:  What did you do today?

Child: Nothing.

So I'll do this blog each day (hopefully) to post what we've done/we're doing.  Maybe it will even help you probe a little deeper at the dinner table?  Today was a great first day!  It truly was.

Period 1 and 2 we read the book 'First Day Jitters' and talked about how we felt (I was nervous). We drew pictures and wrote about our feelings on the first day of school.  We went over some class and school rules and introduced ourselves (and ate a little popcorn).  Then I wowed them with my version of 'Herman the Worm'.  Addy even said 'Wow, you're awesome at guitar!'.

Period 3 and 4 we came up with our own class rules: 1. Be respectful 2. Respect Others 3. Try your best 4. Have fun.  Then we played outside for a little extra time.  We came in and read the first chapter of 'Sideways Stories from Wayside School' and played with Play d'oh (some of us tried to make an elephant).

Period 5 we'll stay outside for a little more play time.  Then we'll come in and explore the resources around the room and hopefully ease into a little 'free time' practising putting materials back where we got them from.

Period 6 is Music (today only).  Normally we'll have music Period 1 on Tuesdays but for the first day of school Mrs. Haynes was nice enough to move things around for me. 

I'm sending home a quick introduction letter and tenative class schedule...as well as a 'concrete' HDSB school calendar.  

NOTE:  It would be really helpful if (new)parents could email their contact information...or at least their email addresses...it would save me a considerable amount of time tracking it down!  I've had a few parents already reach out and let me know some details about their child, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thanks for raising such wonderful children.  I loved this class, this year....I couldn't of asked for a better class to transition out of Covid with.  

Last week I had the students fill out a google survey where they got to vote for their friends for various awards.

Friday June 24th...

 Last Friday of Grade 3...woo hoo!

Here is the plan for today.

Period 1 We'll do a red light activity, and I'll finish reading the Twits.  We'll have a brief discussion about report cards (coming home today).  Hopefully we'll have time to watch the second last video from the National Film Board's series on Life in Early Canada.

Period 2 we will watch chapter 16 of Read All About It and play round 16 of our Connect 4 tournament.

Period 3 and 4 We are going to celebrate our one reading groups completion of Charlotte's Web by checking out the movie.

Period 5 Mr. Butt has them for library/tech.

Period 6 Mrs. Whitehead will come in and we'll see how many guitar chords we can remember and hopefully learn one last chord this year (So far we have Em, G, C, D and A).

Thursday June 23rd

 Last Thursday of Grade 3!!!!

Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 and 2 is literacy.  I'll read the next chapter of 'The Twits'.  Then we'll look on ABCya's website and play some of the fun 'parts of speech' games:  https://www.abcya.com/search/?term=parts%20of%20speech%20quest&type=all.  These were a big hit last year in Grade 3 when we were virtual.

Period 3 and 4 after our mask break we'll come inside and play Round 15 of the connect 4 tournament (only 4 more rounds) and watch chapter 15 of Read All About It and do the follow up questions (only 5 more chapters until the finale).

Period 5 We are supposed to have music...but that's been a little 'hit or miss' this week.

Period 6 is gym, but the gym is being used for Grade 6 graduation set up...so we'll modify and play outside instead.

Wednesday June 22nd

 1 week left of Grade 3...I can't believe it!

Here is the plan for the day.

Period 1 -read aloud and Reader's/Writer's workshop.

Period 2 -French...with Mr. Woolley...it's been a long time!

Period 3 and 4 we're going to do a quick end of the year vote for different topics (e.g., Most Likely to Be a Teacher, Class Clown ...etc.  After that we'll use the chromebooks to brush up on our multiplication and division.

Period 5 we'll watch 2 more episodes of the National Film Board's series on Life in Early Canada.  

Period 6 we'll play round 13 of the Connect 4 tournament and we'll watch chapter 13 of Read All About It.

Tuesday June 21st

 I've had a couple (1) question about 'tech day'.

The class has been begging for a 'tech day'...so we've (I) decided NEXT Tuesday (the 28th) we'll make our 'Tech Day'.

I've warned the class about the risks of bringing tech (lost/stolen/broken) and I'll leave the decision up to the parents.  I've also asked the class to make sure whatever they bring, it's appropriate for school (no shooting/violent games).  

Enough about boring tech, lets talk about fun-learning!

Period 1 -Mr. Butt for library (and of course tech).

Period 2 -Reader's/Writer's Workshop.

Period 3 -is prep payback (Mrs. Haynes wasn't here yesterday).  

Period 4 -Read All About It Chapter 13 and Connect 4 round 13.

Period 5-Social Studies we'll continue the National Film Board's series on Life in the 1800's.  Looking at how Annie makes her own clothing to get ready for back to school time.

Period 6 -gym We'll warm up with some Ham, Chicken, Cheese.  Then finish with some benchball soccer.

Monday June 20th

 I don't think I'll blog the last 3 days of the year next week...so this is it...my final Monday Post of Grade 3.

I just like to take a minute to thank both of my avid readers.  Your support has meant the world to me and given me the strength to continue blogging this whole year.  Thank you.

Period 1 and 2 is literacy.  We will share the highlights of our weekend then have reader's/writer's workshop...with the option to finish our Restaurant advertisements.  

Period 3 and 4 is art.  We learned about Vincent Van Gogh last week...this week we'll attempt to capture his style with our own 'sunflower' pictures.

Period 5 we'll watch the next episode of Read All About It and then play round 12 of Connect 4.

 Fun fair...fun fair...fun fair....fun fair....I mean school, and learning!  Lot's of things on our brains today!

Period 1 and 2 We are going to look closely at what makes a good advertisement.  We'll investigate some the of tricks advertisers use to make their products look so good...then we'll begin designing our own advertisements for a famous restaurant.  

Period 3 Mrs. Alvarez is going to come in and help us write our own limerick's.

Period 4 we'll watch the next episode of Read All About It-chapter 11! We won't answer questions today, but we'll hopefully be able to squeak in Round 11 of our Connect 4 tournament.

Period 5 Mrs. Haynes has them for music.

Period 6 The gym is out of use, so we'll use this period to start our father's day crafts.

Wednesday June 15th

 Here is the plan for today:

Period 1 -we'll do a red light activity, then we'll read some more of 'The Twits'.  After that we'll watch episode 10 of Read All About It.

Period 2 is French.

Period 3 and 4 is math.  After a mask break, we'll revisit telling the time, hopefully up to the minute.  I've got some questions posted on Math Prodigy.

Period 5 - Social Studies.  We'll watch a video of early Canada and what sort of chores children had back in the 1800's and compare them to the chores we have to do in 2022.

Period 6 -we'll end the day with Round 10 of Connect 4 and a little free time after that!

Tuesday June 14th

 Here is the plan for today!

Period 1-tech/library with Mr. Butt.

Period 2 -reader's/writer's workshop.  We'll look a little closer at 'Haiku's'.  Try to create our own.

Period 3 we'll go do some digging in the soil and find out more of the components of soil. After that we'll have a brief mask break. 

Period 4 I have an Estimation Mystery and we'll do rounds 8 and 9 of our Connect 4 tournament.

Period 5 we'll do some social studies.  We'll watch the National Film Board's video on life in Early Canada called 'Emily's Journey'.  

Period 6 we have the gym.  I'm hoping to get the kids to develop their own 'Drum Fit' routine.

Monday June 13th

 2nd last full week of school!  Woo Hoo!

Here is the plan for today:

 I'm back...and it's Friday!

Today will be a little different in that many of our classmates will be gone for the track and field meet most of the day.  Here is what the rest of us will be doing:

Period 6 -I suspect most track and field kids will be arriving back around this time...we'll have Mrs. Whitehead come in and try our second lesson with the guitars.  See if we can remember the Em and maybe try a modified 'G' chord!  Exciting.

Wednesday June 8th

 Here is the plan for today!

Period 1 -Red light activity, read aloud, reader's/writer's workshop.

Period 2 -French

Period 3 and 4 -mask break.  We'll review probability, and fair and unfair games.  I've got a few questions set up on Math prodigy that we'll use the chromebooks to answer.

Period 5 -Science, we'll discuss the components of soil and hopefully get some samples from outside and see what we can find inside of the soil.  

Period 6 -we'll end the day with the next chapter (8) of Read All About It and answer the follow up questions.

Tuesday June 7th

 Yuck...happy rainy (indoor recess) Tuesday!

Here is the plan for today...hopefully.

Period 1 -Mr. Butt for library/technology

Period 2 -we'll read A Boy Called Bat and share highlights for Weekend Round Up.  Any extra time will be devoted to reader's/writer's workshop.

Period 3 and 4 we're going to do some research on some famous man made structures for Science.

Period 5 we'll do round 7 of our Connect 4 tournament.

Period 6 we have the gym.  I'm still not well enough to do 'Drum Fit' but we'll adapt and try some other games like 'everybody's it dodgeball' in the gym.  

Thursday June 2nd

 Day 2 of our new seating arrangements...so far so good.  It's been a long time since we've been sitting in groups.  

Period 1 -we'll finish answering the chapter 6 questions for Read All About It for red light.  Then we'll read a couple of chapters of A Bay Called Bat and answer some chapter summary questions.

Period 2 is reader's/writer's workshop.  The chromebooks are booked, and we'll either read or write online (or not).

Period 3 after our mask break we'll revisit Esti-Mysteries. 

Period 4 we'll do the social studies work from yesterday we never actually ended up getting to.  Learning how Canada got it's name and about the Metis people.

Period 5 is music.

Period 6 is gym.  We have the 'drum fit' kit, which I was planning on using, but I don't think my body will work sufficiently enough to play the 'drums'...so we might be in for some more silent dodgeball.

Wednesday June 1st

 We did it...we made it to June!  

Big day today, since it's the first of the month, and our final month, we're going to do our last seating swap.  We are going to TRY to see if we can pick our own spots...it might be a disaster and require some Mr. Cross intervention...but we will see what we can come up with.

Period 1 will be our great seating swap/reader's/writer's workshop.

Period 2 is French 

Period 3 and 4 is math.  After our mask break we'll come inside and review the names and properties of 2D shapes.  Then I have about 30 questions set up on prodigy that will test them on this knowledge. 

Period 5 we'll do some social studies.  We'll watch a few moments from Canada's Historical Minutes (How Canada got it's name) and learn a little more about the Metis people. 

Period 6 we'll watch the next episode/chapter of Read All About It, maybe even 2!
