Hi everybody. It's nice to be back. I didn't realize how much I missed the class until I saw them this morning, and they gave me such a warm welcome.
Period 1 we spent some time finishing up our OP art and Picasso art. Then we read more from Camp X. Then we did some guided/independent reading.
Period 2 we had our writer's workshop. Our mini-lesson was about word choice, specifically (the word 'said').
Period 3 we played some more 'soccer-like' games in gym.
Period 4 we did some cool 'patterning' activities in math. Using our names as the core for our repeating pattern.
Period 5 Mrs. Smith was away today, so Mrs. Chamberlain taught the kids science.
Period 6 we're going to finish up (OP art, Picasso art, Patterning activities)
***NOTE*** Field trip forms for our trip to Ireland House in Burlington, Dec. 15th going home today*** please pay online!

November 23rd
Happy almost Friday? I hope the kids enjoy the PD day tomorrow.
Looking forward to my last night of interviews tonight!
Period 1 we worked on our OP art for Red Light. Then we read Camp X. After that, we did guided/independent reading.
Period 2 we started off our writer's workshop off with Gillian sharing her published story. Then we looked at the difference between using Much and Many....I think we got it now. Then we wrote.
Period 3 we played some soccer games in gym.
Period 4 we talked about patterns. What they are, where we can find them. Then the kids got some risk-free exploration time to create their own patterns.
Period 5, Mrs. Smith is teaching health...only I notice Mrs. Smith is sick today, so I guess her supply teacher is teaching health.
Period 6 we're going to clean up my classroom (so the parents THINK I'm neat and organized) and work on finishing our Bridget Riley/M.C. Escher inspired OP art.
Have nice long weekends...be sure to come by the OP marketplace on Saturday (if you're around).

Period 2 we had our Writer's Workshop, today's mini lesson was about organizing our writing into chapters and using 'cliff hangers' to connect chapters.
Period 3 we finished up our Math game from yesterday, practising our 'finger perception'. Maanit also wowed us with his 'Rubik's Cube' skills.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith did a cool 'tower experiment' with the kids in science.
Period 5 the kids have Mrs. Djonovich for Music.
Period 6 we are going to go to the book fair for a preview and make up our wish lists. After that (if there is any time) we'll try to finish our OP art.

November 17th
Another good day... to finish up a great week!
Good job class getting 14 out of 20 kids dressing in RED!
It's Friday, so this is going to be a super quick post.
The morning we did quiet activities for Red Light. Then we read a chapter of the The Nose From Jupiter. After that we did independent reading and guided reading. Then we had a nice long period to write./conference.
Period 3 -We went onto google classroom and did 2 quizzes on https://quizizz.com.
Period 4 we had gym and played soccer.
Period 5 we read another chapter from The Nose From Jupiter and some Go Noodle. Then Maanit shared his published piece of writing. We had a bit of free time before we continued our Geronimo Stilton episode.
A great day. Have a great weekend!
Kudos to Zane on his newest coding art.
*A tiny (very easy to lose) piece of paper is coming home tonight with a reminder of Parent Teacher conference times and dates.
I've had parents ask if the students are expected to come... I always leave that to the discretion of the parents. Students are always welcome, but I also understand if they don't.

A great day so far...like really, really good.
Period 1 we read a bit more of The Nose From Jupiter, and did a 'flat' rendition of Island in the Sun. Then we did independent and guided reading.
Period 2 we did the Walking Song and talked about how good writers 'anticipate and answer' questions from readers in their writing.
Period 3 we had gym and practised our soccer skills.
Period 4 we spent working on Learning skills reflection activity...getting ready for next weeks interviews.
Period 5 we have Mrs. Smith.
Period 6 we're going to hopefully finish up our Andy Warhol art and maybe watch a little Geronimo Stilton while we do our art...A nice ending to a great day.

So far we've had a good day.
Period 1 we started off with a nice long read aloud. Then we moved into guided/independent reading.
Period 2 we did our 'writer's workshop'. Today's mini lesson was brought to you by 'run-on sentences'.
Period 3 we did a brief assessment on bar graphs and pictographs.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith is teaching science.
Period 5 Mrs. Djonovich is teaching music.
Period 6 I am hoping to allocate to 'finishing up math assessments/ Andy Warhol inspired art'

November 14th
It's only period 2...but this is what I hope is going to happen today.
Period 1 we tried to read aloud in our most Mr. Cross-like voices. I'm worried what your children think I sound like. I swallowed my pride, and continued to read aloud regardless. Then we had some independent/guided reading time.
Period 2 Mrs. Smith is teaching Science.
Period 3 we're having our writer's workshop...today's mini lesson will focus on using pronouns carefully.
Period 4 we're going to look closely at half's ...or halving. We're going to do some fun exploring on what half really means and looks like.
Period 5 and 6 we're going to study Andy Warhol, and try to create masterpieces in his style...focusing on some the shapes we see in nature.
** Please take a look at the interview schedule, let me know if you need to change your time***

November 13th
We started the day off talking about the importance of remembering soldiers on Remembrance Day. Then we did our weekend round up. After that we had a half hour to read or write in the workshop. I got to conference with Miliana and Maanit about their writing. We also do another version of Island in the Sun...we're getting better...I think!
Period 3 I very briefly introduced the kids to 'pictographs'. It seems like a concept many of them already knew lots about. Then we were off to the library.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith is teaching science.
Period 5 we have the computers. We're going to make bar graphs on create a graph from the data we collected last week. Any extra time will be devoted to coding. Check out Lena's game she created on code.org.
Period 6 we're going to review pictographs, and finish up our math. Any remaining time will be spent working on collaboration skills!
Also...Just a reminder, progress reports are going home next Monday...I've almost finished the interview schedule. Here it is, in case you've forgotten your date/time:

November 10th
A much better day (and more successful gym class)!
Period 1 and 2 we had our Remembrance Day assembly. The assembly was terrific, and the kids were all very respectful and well behaved.
Period 3 we had the computers. We finished a graphing assignment on Prodigy and explored code.org afterward.
Period 4 we had gym. We played bench ball soccer, and the kids seem to have even more fun today.
Period 5 we're going to finish up our graphing activity and share our results.
Period 6 we'll take it easy and practise those collaboration skills by playing games with others.
Have a great weekend!

November 10th
Another day down!
We started off by looking at our class' favourite foods. You'll be glad to know Candy, Ice Cream and Goldfish crackers are all very popular.
Then we read from our class novel, The Nose From Jupiter. After that, we did some independent/guided reading.
Period 2 we worked on our Writer's workshop. Today's lesson was all about using 'transition words'.
Period 3 we worked on our soccer skills, and played bench ball...that's where things started to go a little south.
I think the time change, and the competitive nature of some of the kids took this game from fun to un-fun kind of quickly. There were quite a few upset kids. Lots of talk of "cheating and not cheating and winning and losing."
Luckily nothing cures upset children like math class!
Period 4 we continued to work on our graphing activity from yesterday. Conducting a surveys, collecting data and representing it on a bar graph. I noticed some of the emotions from gym class carrying over to math class too.
Period 5 Mrs. Smith is teaching science.
Period 6 I had drama planned, but think I a community circle may be in order. I'm going to reenforce the importance of being kind. Go over some of the skills that good partners have. Then I plan to give them so free time to play a game (e.g., board game) with some friends to practise those skills.
Wish me luck!
Big thanks for Mrs. Perks for hanging up our awesome art (Matisse and the Leaf men)

November 8th
A good day so far.
Period 1 we started off with a 'red light' activity where we wrote down our LEAST favourite foods. It turns out that nobody likes brussels sprouts. Mushrooms, tuna and sea weed also get honourable mentions. Then we read from our class novel. The Norbert character is getting a lot of laughs. Then we had some independent/guided reading.
Period 2 we did a quick mini-lesson on keeping the perspective (point of view) consistent. Then we went to our desks to start writing. Ellene and I started our first conference.
Period 3 we had math, we talked about asking a question, conducting a survey, collecting data in tally charts and displaying that data on a bar graph. The kids got to work in partners (if they wanted) and find out a question they could collect data and graph. Hopefully we'll finish up tomorrow.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith started science.
Period 5 Mrs. Djonovich is doing music.
Period 6 I'm hoping to (re)teach the A minor chord. Then put the chords together to play Island in the Sun. Hopefully soon we'll have something concrete we can record!!!
update: here is our very first attempt at playing part of a song on the guitar....we'll get there...eventually

November 7th
Another great day almost done...
Period 1 we read The Nose From Jupiter, at our desks because some maintenance men were fixing the lights in our room, on our carpet. Then we did some independent reading/guided reading.
Period 2 we stated off with the Walking Song. Andy was all smiles. Then we had our Writer's workshop. We reviewed the editing process and did some writing.
Period 3 we reviewed all the parts of a bar graph, then did this worksheet.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith taught social studies (she was away this morning on a field trip).
Period 5 and 6 we're going to look closely at Henri Matisse, and attempt to create masterpieces in his style.
Special Thanks to Angela Boyd, and the 13 students who were able to donate to our basket...this is what we got (notice the $40 gift card too).
Lastly, I just want to point out that our class seems to be going through our 'healthy snack' bin quicker than the other classes. We've talked about the 'take what you need, NOT what you want' guideline. Perhaps parents could discuss this with their kids at home too? Just to ensure that the kids who really need it, have it.

So far we're off to a good start.
Period 1 we had our Weekend Round up. Then we read some more from The Nose From Jupiter. Then the kids had some independent/partner reading time.
Period 2 we went over the 'editing process' and talked about 'publishing' some of our writing. Unfortunately with the long 'weekend round up' we didn't actually get a chance to write today.
Period 3 we read Lena's recommendation, Somebody and the Three Blaire's (a parody of Goldilocks). Then we went to Library.
Period 4 the kids have Mrs. Smith (who is actually Mrs. Chamberlain today) for social studies.
Period 5 we have the computers booked. We're going to finish up some data management questions on prodigy before we explore more of code.org.
Period 6 is dedicated to finishing up. We have some rounding math from last week as well as a data management assignment and a few leaf men to finish too. Any extra time will be 'exploration time'.

November 3rd
Here is a typical, rushed, Friday post.
Period 1 we did a couple of difficult mazes for Red Light. Then we started our new read aloud, The Nose From Jupiter. Then the kids did some independent reading while a few us did some guided reading at the blue table.
Period 2 we started the writer's workshop. It went great. We did a mini lesson about using the Thesaurus...ask your kids what the word perambulate means, and why it doesn't sound like 'us'.
Period 3 we're going to use the computers to make graphs on create-a-graph. We're going to familiarize ourselves with the software, download pdf's and hopefully add them to our class folder on the cloud.
Period 4 Mrs. Chamberlain is coming in for me in the afternoon. She'll be taking the kids to gym.
Period 5 and 6 Mrs. Chamberlain is going to do some 'leaf rubbing' art with the class.
Have a great weekend...see you Monday!

November 2nd
Period 1 -we did a hidden picture puzzle for red light. Then we read the rest of The One And Only Ivan. It took a little longer than expected, but the kids wanted to finish it, and I am a sucker for read alouds. Then we had a little independent reading.
Period 2 -we started off with a little shared reading. We tried singing this song. The kids did a good job, Mr. Cross managed to mess up the guitar both times...just my way of showing them my brain is getting bigger. The rest of the period we worked on our Writer's Workshop.
Period 3 we had gym where we worked on our catching and targeting.
Period 4 we did a calming activity for Go Noodle and then examined and created bar graphs. We also watched a video on mean, median and mode.
Period 5 and 6 we're getting into our panther packs and finishing designing our rocks.
Please remember to donate $5 to our class basket to support Parent Council, if you already haven't.

November 2nd
Just a reminder.
The deadline for our holiday basket is quickly approaching.
So far we've only had 8 families donate...I know we can do more!
Parent council has requested that each item in the basket retail for $15 minimum...they are encouraging families to work together and pool their money.
Angela Boyd (Lily's mom) has graciously offered to organize this for our class. She suggested collecting $5 from each child, then she will go out and do our shopping (thank you!).
You can either send the money in to school with your child, and I'll make sure Angela gets it, or you can find Angela on the blacktop before or after school and hand her the money yourself.
Here is Angela's contact information:
email: angela.boyd99@sympatico.ca
text: 905.330.1233
This is a VERY worthy cause! Please consider donating as the money goes right back into the school. We're looking to get new technology and robotics equipment, furniture for the library and phase 3 of the learning garden!
Thanks to Angela and everyone for contributing.

This is a VERY worthy cause! Please consider donating as the money goes right back into the school. We're looking to get new technology and robotics equipment, furniture for the library and phase 3 of the learning garden!
Thanks to Angela and everyone for contributing.

November 1st
Happy first of the month.
You know what that means, seating change!
Period 1 we practised skip counting by 3's for red light. Then we did a little read aloud from The One and Only Ivan. We ended the period by using the random number generator to help pick our new seats.
Period 2 we had a reader's/writer's workshop, I got the chance to do some guided reading with an enthusiastic bunch of girls.
Period 3 we started our new unit on data management. We did a tally chart of eye colours in the class, then the kids worked in partners (or on our own) to display that data. Some interesting ideas. We looked at some of the different ways of categorizing Sophie and Eli's candy.
I'm sending home a sheet tonight, for the kids to hopefully organize their data.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith is teaching some health.
Period 5 Mrs. Djonovich is teaching music.
Period 6 We'll play a little skip counting game called Bizz, Buzz then I'll be teaching the kids (that want to participate) the A minor chord on the guitars. Then we'll probably have a little 'exploration' time after that.
