I just want to thank everyone for all their support this year. Your children are amazing.
Most of the class would like to do something 'special' on the last day (tomorrow). The voted to Dress Up in their P.J.'s and bring a stuffed animal. We'll watch a movie and enjoy each other's company. Hopefully I'll remember to bring some popcorn.
Kid's do not HAVE to dress up, totally optional.
I hope everyone has a safe, and relaxing holiday break!
See you in the new year.

December 20th
2 more days left!
Today we finished up our art from yesterday for Red Light. Then we worked in partners on a 'shared reading' presentation we'll be doing on Friday.
Period 2 we had our 'reader's writer's' workshop.
Period 3 we had the computers. We enjoyed some free time.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith took the kids to the gym for a great big sing along.
Period 5 Mrs. Djonovich taught music.
Period 6 we finished up some 'time work' and some artwork.
Things are a little chaotic these last few days before the break. Please excuse me if I don't get around to blogging Thursday and Friday.
I'd just like to take the moment to thank everyone for a terrific year so far. I hope you all have a restful and relaxing holiday. Be safe, have fun!
Make sure you read lots over the holidays...write if you can. We'll be finishing up our unit on time when we get back. I'm hoping everyone can read an analogue clock by the time they get back.

Here is my attempt at a period 2 blog!
First period we finished up some math for RED light. Then we read more for A Tale of Desperaux. Then the kids had some time to read independently.
Period 2 Mrs. Smith is carrying on with some science.
Period 3 We'll have our Writer's workshop...the mini lesson will focus on reasons to start a new paragraph.
Period 4 we're going to look closer at analogue clocks...using the telling time 'every hour has it's own room' technique:

Trying to blog on my lunch. This should be a great week. I always enjoy this time, having fun with kids before the holidays.
Period 1 we had Maanit and Yousif share some games they they created on Scratch. Then we walked down to the lost and found to look for any lost items before they're donated. Then we came back upstairs and did our weekend round up.
Period 2 we read a couple of chapters from the Tale of Desperaux. Then it was kids choice for reader's writer's workshop.
Period 3 we're going to revisit the calendar, and look at these worksheets:
http://www.k5learning.com/worksheets/math/grade-3-calender-elapsed-time-a.pdf A
http://www.k5learning.com/worksheets/math/grade-3-calendar-full-year-c.pdf B
Then we have library.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith is teaching the kids something...Science related, I believe.
Period 5 and 6 we're getting into our panther packs and creating christmas cards for people who don't get many of them (Seniors I think?)

An eventful day for sure!
We had a blast at Ireland House. We got back with enough time to eat, enjoy the computers, and enjoy some 'exploration time'.
Please Note...this coming Monday (the 18th) is a spirit day. Apparently it's comfy clothing day. Which sounds pretty awesome.
Have amazing weekends.

December 14th
Another great day (almost) in the books.
Here is what we did.
For Red Light, we looked at a picture of Charlotte holding scrambled eggs, toast and tomatoes. We had to 'infer' what was happening in the picture and what clues we used to figure it out. We came up with:
Charlotte made dinner for her family last night
clues:
-She's holding a plate of food.
-She looks like she's in a kitchen.
-Our Random Act of Kindness yesterday was to help make dinner.
Then we read from The Tale of Desperaux...possibly my favourite book. Then the kids had their own time to read independently.
Period 2 we continued our 'writer's workshop'. Our mini lesson today focused on 'eliminating filler'.
Period 3 we had 'gym' but the class voted that it was too cold to go outside, so we stayed inside and did some go noodle (www.gonoodle.com). We also had a little free time.
Period 4 we answered did a couple of activities on 'flipgrid'. This one was about smart thinking while reading (listening to Desperaux). I haven't had a chance to check them all out yet, but enjoy!
Period 5 and 6 were rehearsal/assembly for the holiday concert.
Reminder...Tomorrow we're away all day on a field trip to Ireland House in Burlington.
We won't be outside, but the kids are to wear boots as they are travelling between buildings.
Also, we'll be meeting in the front office at 9:15 so we can leave ASAP. Don't be late!
And tonight, the concert starts at 6:30, but I think the doors open at 6. There should've been a
email sent out yesterday? All the Grade 3's are meeting in one room (I want to say room 120) but
that information will be posted in the hallway when (if) you arrive.

December 13th
We started today off by looking closely at the list of items from the Holiday Hampers....thinking about which gift we'd like to give most to the women and children at Halton's Women's Place.
Then we went to Mrs. Hayes' Grade 3 class to practise for the concert.
When we got back it was already period 2. We read a little from the Tale of Desperaux. Then the kids had their choice to read or write for the remainder of the workshop.
Period 3 I introduced the kids to our next unit in math, time.
We looked at the 2018 calendar:
We talked about a counting by days and weeks. Some kids need a little extra practise with this. "Example, what day is 2 weeks after your birthday".
Period 4 Mrs. Smith is teaching science.
Period 5 Mrs. Djonovich is teaching music.
Period 6 we're going to do a giant desk clean out, finish up some work and practise our poem for the musical.
Random Acts of Kindness...to help make dinner? (good luck)
Some things to note:
-Tomorrow is our concert (2:00 PM during the day 6:30 PM at night)
-We have gym, but the gym is unavailable, so we'll be going outside for gym tomorrow....dress appropriately
-Almost everyone has paid, but I'm still missing a few permission forms for our Ireland House trip on Friday
-On Friday, we're leaving right away. We're going to meet in the front hall, by the office so we can catch the bus right away. The trip will be indoors the whole time, other than a short walk between buildings ...wear boots, but you probably don't need snow pants!

December 12th
It's only period 2...but here we go!
Period 1 we finished up some work from yesterday for Red Light (if we were done, we made Lena's sister a birthday card). Then we started our new read aloud, The Tale of Desperaux. Please don't let your kids watch the movie before we finish the book...PLEASE! Then we had the last 20 minutes to choose to read or write during the reader's/writer's workshop.
Period 2, it looks like the kids are continuing some science experiments from yesterday with Mrs. Smith.
Period 3 and 4 we have the computers. I've got 12 patterning questions on Math Prodigy that the kids must answer. After that, I'm going to give them some time to code on Scratch (or code.org if they prefer).
Period 5 and 6 I was planning on doing art work that focuses on the style of Laurel Burch ... However, Mrs. Djonovich has put out an email to all teacher's looking for decorations for the gym for Thursday night's Performance. So, we're going to switch the plans and try to make some Holiday, festive art.
*** We got our 'Holiday Hamper' to donate to Halton's Women Place... I very worthy cause. Please consider donating! Here is a link to the 'synervoice' that has/is (?) going out.

December 11th
This is going to be a busy week I think...before I forget, here are a few items to note:
- Our Random Act Of Kindness for today - to pick up garbage
- Please send indoor shoes (if you haven't already) -our carpet is going to look pretty yucky soon if we keep wearing our boots inside the classroom
- The holiday performance is on Thursday - so the gym will be unavailable for use -I'll be taking the kids outside for Gym on Thursday (Dress appropriately)
- We have our field trip to Ireland House on Friday -we're leaving right at 9:15 - so don't be late! Also, I have no idea if there is an 'outdoor' component to this trip, so please also dress appropriately
Ok, now for the day.
We welcomed our newest student, Jacob, to Orchard Park this morning. We began with a circle introducing ourselves, and sharing the highlights from our weekends. Then we finished Camp X. Then the kids had a chance to read or write in today's reader's writer's workshop.
Period 3 worked on number patterns using dice. The kids got a chance to really challenge themselves. It was fun to watch. We also did a number talk to begin the class.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith is doing some exciting science challenge with kids.
Period 5 we're going to do Drama, and head to the Library for our book exchange.
Period 6 we're going to finish up our math, and maybe have a little 'free time' to relax on this snowy Monday.
Friday, 8 December 2017
December 8th
Happy Friday.
Happy Birthday Lily!
I'm going to try to post this BEFORE school...as I have no preps on Fridays.
Period 1 we're going to do a little read aloud and some independent reading/guided reading.
Period 2 we'll do our Writer's workshop - today's mini lesson focuses on using similes in our writing. (improving word choice).
Period 3 the kids were so into the Scratch - google doodle creations from yesterday, I'm hoping we can all create our own accounts and continue working (and this time saving) our creations.
Period 4 we have gym, and we'll be getting fit, using the drums.
Period 5 we're going to do a little math. Looking at number patterns, and using dice to create our own. Sort of like this:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JGG_3AeRdnKvT4hOEhkXUg9o3IpSVJHIoJIUsN1r52M/edit?usp=sharing
Period 6 we're going to relax, finish up some unfinished work, and hopefully enjoy just a bit of free time before the weekend!
NOTE: We are all out of Kleenex in our classroom. Halton has some 1 ply/sandpaper we are able to use, but if you care about the condition of your child's upper lip, please consider donating a box?

Another great day...almost in the books!
Period 1we finished up some unfinished art for Red Light. Yousif shared his Dogman 2 comic he worked on with Lena. Our RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS for today, is to use our manners. Then we had independent/guided reading.
Period 2 we had our writer's workshop, with a mini lesson focusing on describing settings using all 5 of our senses.
Period 3 we got to do 'Drum-Fit' in gym.
Period 4 we worked on In/Out machines in math...this sort of thing.
Period 5 is Mrs. Smith for science.

Happy Wednesday.
Today has been great so far!
Period 1 we came up with 'back up' acts for our Random Acts Of Kindness chain for red light. Today's random act: Leaving nice notes around the school. Then we proceeded to work on some unfinished work while I read aloud. At 9:45 we got together with the other Grade 3 classes and practised our song for the musical in the library...sounding great!
Period 2 we did some shared reading of the poem we'll also be performing at the concert:
Then we had our Reader's Writer's workshop. The kids worked well.
Period 3 we looked at 'in/out' machines in patterning. Then, the kids logged into Math Prodigy and did some 'in/out' machines online.
Period 4 (now) Mrs. Smith is teaching science.
Period 5 Mrs. Djonovich is teaching music.
Period 6 we'll spend finishing up all our unfinished work: OP art, Picasso art, Tessellation work, and Name patterns.

It's only period 2...but here is my best guess on what will happen today...
Period 1 - Trying to solve the pentomino puzzle for Red Light...still no success. Our random act of kindness is to 'share a toy with someone else'. I'm not sure if we'll be able to execute that act here at school....Then we did some independent/guided reading.
Period 2 -Mrs. Smith to teach science.
Period 3 -we're going to do our writer's workshop. Today's mini lesson will be about creating fictional characters that the readers will care about.
Period 4 -we'll be doing math. We'll begin with another number talk, then we'll be looking at tessellations, first by using pentominoes, then by creating our own.
Period 5 and 6 I have devoted to art (even though many STILL haven't finished last weeks art...). Today we'll be sticking with MC Escher and his tessellation work. We're going to attempt to create our own...like in this video:

I can't believe it's already December!
Today has been great so far. Period 1 we started with the Great Weekend Round Up. Lots of kids went to the parade apparently, and set up their trees.
Then we pulled a link off the chain. Today's random act of kindness is to use nice words!
Period 2 the kids could choose between reading or writing (or both) for the reader's/writer's workshop.
Period 3 we did a quick number talk on using doubles/near doubles to help us add. Then we went to the library.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith is teaching Science.
Period 5 we have the computers...I'm hoping to use flip grid to share our weekends...and respond.
Check out our Flipgrid at: https://flipgrid.com/204e12
Period 6 I'm planning on showing the kids pentominoes, and get us set for tessellation art tomorrow!

Another great day...have to keep it quick.
Period 1 we did the 'Great Big Seat Switch Up'...that took most of the period. Yousif shared with us his green belt, and Zane shared a cool code!
Period 2 we worked on our Reader's/Writer's workshop.
Period 3 we made a chain of kindness...littered with random acts of kindness... each day we'll break off one chain and attempt to complete that act of kindness...parents, watch for kids doing chores without being asked.
Period 4 we had gym.
Period 5 we had computers. Mrs. Labelle and I introduced the kids to 'flip grid'...check out some of these hilarious results...check it out...kind of silly, but we're learning the program.

Hi everybody. It's nice to be back. I didn't realize how much I missed the class until I saw them this morning, and they gave me such a warm welcome.
Period 1 we spent some time finishing up our OP art and Picasso art. Then we read more from Camp X. Then we did some guided/independent reading.
Period 2 we had our writer's workshop. Our mini-lesson was about word choice, specifically (the word 'said').
Period 3 we played some more 'soccer-like' games in gym.
Period 4 we did some cool 'patterning' activities in math. Using our names as the core for our repeating pattern.
Period 5 Mrs. Smith was away today, so Mrs. Chamberlain taught the kids science.
Period 6 we're going to finish up (OP art, Picasso art, Patterning activities)
***NOTE*** Field trip forms for our trip to Ireland House in Burlington, Dec. 15th going home today*** please pay online!

A good day so far (it's only first break).
Period 1 we welcomed back Mrs. Perks and made birthday cards for Natalie. We read from Camp X and had some independent reading before Andy joined us.
Period 2 Mrs. Smith taught the kids Science.
Period 3 we're going to have our Writer's workshop. Our mini lesson will focus on varying sentence beginnings. We'll do a Go Noodle activity to get our brains set for math.
Period 4 we'll do math...looking closer at repeating patterns and pattern cores. We'll play this game to begin:http://www.abcya.com/patterns.htm
Period 5 and 6 we're going to look at Pablo Picasso:
We'll discuss his 'cubist' technique and try to channel our inner-Picasso to create some lively portraits...

Period 3 we read Camp X and went to the library.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith is teaching the kids Science (I belive)
Period 5 we have the computers. We're going to use Quiziz for a Camp X quiz and a patterning quiz.
Period 6 we're going to hopefully finish our OP art!!!

November 23rd
Happy almost Friday? I hope the kids enjoy the PD day tomorrow.
Looking forward to my last night of interviews tonight!
Period 1 we worked on our OP art for Red Light. Then we read Camp X. After that, we did guided/independent reading.
Period 2 we started off our writer's workshop off with Gillian sharing her published story. Then we looked at the difference between using Much and Many....I think we got it now. Then we wrote.
Period 3 we played some soccer games in gym.
Period 4 we talked about patterns. What they are, where we can find them. Then the kids got some risk-free exploration time to create their own patterns.
Period 5, Mrs. Smith is teaching health...only I notice Mrs. Smith is sick today, so I guess her supply teacher is teaching health.
Period 6 we're going to clean up my classroom (so the parents THINK I'm neat and organized) and work on finishing our Bridget Riley/M.C. Escher inspired OP art.
Have nice long weekends...be sure to come by the OP marketplace on Saturday (if you're around).

Period 6 we're going to clean up my classroom (so the parents THINK I'm neat and organized) and work on finishing our Bridget Riley/M.C. Escher inspired OP art.
Have nice long weekends...be sure to come by the OP marketplace on Saturday (if you're around).

November 22nd
It was great getting to see many of the parents last night...I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of you over the next couple of days.
I got a lot of positive feedback about the blog, thanks for reading it!
Period 1 we made 'get well soon' cards for Mrs. Perks for Red Light. Then we read from our new class novel, Camp X. Then we did some independent/guided reading.
Period 2 we had our Writer's Workshop, today's mini lesson was about organizing our writing into chapters and using 'cliff hangers' to connect chapters.
Period 3 we finished up our Math game from yesterday, practising our 'finger perception'. Maanit also wowed us with his 'Rubik's Cube' skills.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith did a cool 'tower experiment' with the kids in science.
Period 5 the kids have Mrs. Djonovich for Music.
Period 6 we are going to go to the book fair for a preview and make up our wish lists. After that (if there is any time) we'll try to finish our OP art.
Tuesday, 21 November 2017
November 21st
Today will have to be an extra short post...I am very busy with interviews.
Period 1 we started a new read aloud, Camp X. Then we had independent reading.
Period 2 Mrs. Smith is doing a science experiment.
Period 3 Writer's Workshop, mini lesson on rising action, story arc.
Period 4 we'll try the math game from yesterday, making totals.
Period 5 and 6 we'll be looking at famous OP (optical illusion) Artist, like MC Escher and be creating our own OP art...hopefully.

Happy Monday...happy progress report cards go home...and happy birthday to Miliana.
So far so good today.
Period 1 we made birthday cards for Miliana. We did our weekend round up.
Period 2 we had our reader's/writer's workshop while I conferenced with Gillian and Lena.
Period 3 we read a couple of chapters of The Nose From Jupiter (only one left) and went to Library.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith taught the kids about parts of the brain and being mindful (ask your child what the 3 parts of the brain are).
Period 5 we're going to log into Google Classroom to do another quiz on the website Quizzizz...
Period 6 we're going to hand out the progress reports and hopefully play the math game I've had planned for awhile.
Here is a link to the interview schedule. I'll be here until 6 the next few nights. Please check to confirm. Let me know if you can't make your scheduled time:

November 17th
Another good day... to finish up a great week!
Good job class getting 14 out of 20 kids dressing in RED!
It's Friday, so this is going to be a super quick post.
The morning we did quiet activities for Red Light. Then we read a chapter of the The Nose From Jupiter. After that we did independent reading and guided reading. Then we had a nice long period to write./conference.
Period 3 -We went onto google classroom and did 2 quizzes on https://quizizz.com.
Period 4 we had gym and played soccer.
Period 5 we read another chapter from The Nose From Jupiter and some Go Noodle. Then Maanit shared his published piece of writing. We had a bit of free time before we continued our Geronimo Stilton episode.
A great day. Have a great weekend!
Kudos to Zane on his newest coding art.
*A tiny (very easy to lose) piece of paper is coming home tonight with a reminder of Parent Teacher conference times and dates.
I've had parents ask if the students are expected to come... I always leave that to the discretion of the parents. Students are always welcome, but I also understand if they don't.

November 16th
A great day so far...like really, really good.
Period 1 we read a bit more of The Nose From Jupiter, and did a 'flat' rendition of Island in the Sun. Then we did independent and guided reading.
Period 2 we did the Walking Song and talked about how good writers 'anticipate and answer' questions from readers in their writing.
Period 3 we had gym and practised our soccer skills.
Period 4 we spent working on Learning skills reflection activity...getting ready for next weeks interviews.
Period 5 we have Mrs. Smith.
Period 6 we're going to hopefully finish up our Andy Warhol art and maybe watch a little Geronimo Stilton while we do our art...A nice ending to a great day.
***tomorrow is a spirit day...Grade 3's are suppose to wear RED***

So far we've had a good day.
Period 1 we started off with a nice long read aloud. Then we moved into guided/independent reading.
Period 2 we did our 'writer's workshop'. Today's mini lesson was brought to you by 'run-on sentences'.
Period 3 we did a brief assessment on bar graphs and pictographs.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith is teaching science.
Period 5 Mrs. Djonovich is teaching music.
Period 6 I am hoping to allocate to 'finishing up math assessments/ Andy Warhol inspired art'

November 14th
It's only period 2...but this is what I hope is going to happen today.
Period 1 we tried to read aloud in our most Mr. Cross-like voices. I'm worried what your children think I sound like. I swallowed my pride, and continued to read aloud regardless. Then we had some independent/guided reading time.
Period 2 Mrs. Smith is teaching Science.
Period 3 we're having our writer's workshop...today's mini lesson will focus on using pronouns carefully.
Period 4 we're going to look closely at half's ...or halving. We're going to do some fun exploring on what half really means and looks like.
Period 5 and 6 we're going to study Andy Warhol, and try to create masterpieces in his style...focusing on some the shapes we see in nature.
** Please take a look at the interview schedule, let me know if you need to change your time***

November 13th
We started the day off talking about the importance of remembering soldiers on Remembrance Day. Then we did our weekend round up. After that we had a half hour to read or write in the workshop. I got to conference with Miliana and Maanit about their writing. We also do another version of Island in the Sun...we're getting better...I think!
Period 3 I very briefly introduced the kids to 'pictographs'. It seems like a concept many of them already knew lots about. Then we were off to the library.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith is teaching science.
Period 5 we have the computers. We're going to make bar graphs on create a graph from the data we collected last week. Any extra time will be devoted to coding. Check out Lena's game she created on code.org.
Period 6 we're going to review pictographs, and finish up our math. Any remaining time will be spent working on collaboration skills!
Also...Just a reminder, progress reports are going home next Monday...I've almost finished the interview schedule. Here it is, in case you've forgotten your date/time:

November 10th
A much better day (and more successful gym class)!
Period 1 and 2 we had our Remembrance Day assembly. The assembly was terrific, and the kids were all very respectful and well behaved.
Period 3 we had the computers. We finished a graphing assignment on Prodigy and explored code.org afterward.
Period 4 we had gym. We played bench ball soccer, and the kids seem to have even more fun today.
Period 5 we're going to finish up our graphing activity and share our results.
Period 6 we'll take it easy and practise those collaboration skills by playing games with others.
Have a great weekend!

November 10th
Another day down!
We started off by looking at our class' favourite foods. You'll be glad to know Candy, Ice Cream and Goldfish crackers are all very popular.
Then we read from our class novel, The Nose From Jupiter. After that, we did some independent/guided reading.
Period 2 we worked on our Writer's workshop. Today's lesson was all about using 'transition words'.
Period 3 we worked on our soccer skills, and played bench ball...that's where things started to go a little south.
I think the time change, and the competitive nature of some of the kids took this game from fun to un-fun kind of quickly. There were quite a few upset kids. Lots of talk of "cheating and not cheating and winning and losing."
Luckily nothing cures upset children like math class!
Period 4 we continued to work on our graphing activity from yesterday. Conducting a surveys, collecting data and representing it on a bar graph. I noticed some of the emotions from gym class carrying over to math class too.
Period 5 Mrs. Smith is teaching science.
Period 6 I had drama planned, but think I a community circle may be in order. I'm going to reenforce the importance of being kind. Go over some of the skills that good partners have. Then I plan to give them so free time to play a game (e.g., board game) with some friends to practise those skills.
Wish me luck!
Big thanks for Mrs. Perks for hanging up our awesome art (Matisse and the Leaf men)

November 8th
A good day so far.
Period 1 we started off with a 'red light' activity where we wrote down our LEAST favourite foods. It turns out that nobody likes brussels sprouts. Mushrooms, tuna and sea weed also get honourable mentions. Then we read from our class novel. The Norbert character is getting a lot of laughs. Then we had some independent/guided reading.
Period 2 we did a quick mini-lesson on keeping the perspective (point of view) consistent. Then we went to our desks to start writing. Ellene and I started our first conference.
Period 3 we had math, we talked about asking a question, conducting a survey, collecting data in tally charts and displaying that data on a bar graph. The kids got to work in partners (if they wanted) and find out a question they could collect data and graph. Hopefully we'll finish up tomorrow.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith started science.
Period 5 Mrs. Djonovich is doing music.
Period 6 I'm hoping to (re)teach the A minor chord. Then put the chords together to play Island in the Sun. Hopefully soon we'll have something concrete we can record!!!
update: here is our very first attempt at playing part of a song on the guitar....we'll get there...eventually

Another great day almost done...
Period 1 we read The Nose From Jupiter, at our desks because some maintenance men were fixing the lights in our room, on our carpet. Then we did some independent reading/guided reading.
Period 2 we stated off with the Walking Song. Andy was all smiles. Then we had our Writer's workshop. We reviewed the editing process and did some writing.
Period 3 we reviewed all the parts of a bar graph, then did this worksheet.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith taught social studies (she was away this morning on a field trip).
Period 5 and 6 we're going to look closely at Henri Matisse, and attempt to create masterpieces in his style.
Special Thanks to Angela Boyd, and the 13 students who were able to donate to our basket...this is what we got (notice the $40 gift card too).
Lastly, I just want to point out that our class seems to be going through our 'healthy snack' bin quicker than the other classes. We've talked about the 'take what you need, NOT what you want' guideline. Perhaps parents could discuss this with their kids at home too? Just to ensure that the kids who really need it, have it.

November 6th
So far we're off to a good start.
Period 1 we had our Weekend Round up. Then we read some more from The Nose From Jupiter. Then the kids had some independent/partner reading time.
Period 2 we went over the 'editing process' and talked about 'publishing' some of our writing. Unfortunately with the long 'weekend round up' we didn't actually get a chance to write today.
Period 3 we read Lena's recommendation, Somebody and the Three Blaire's (a parody of Goldilocks). Then we went to Library.
Period 4 the kids have Mrs. Smith (who is actually Mrs. Chamberlain today) for social studies.
Period 5 we have the computers booked. We're going to finish up some data management questions on prodigy before we explore more of code.org.
Period 6 is dedicated to finishing up. We have some rounding math from last week as well as a data management assignment and a few leaf men to finish too. Any extra time will be 'exploration time'.

November 3rd
Here is a typical, rushed, Friday post.
Period 1 we did a couple of difficult mazes for Red Light. Then we started our new read aloud, The Nose From Jupiter. Then the kids did some independent reading while a few us did some guided reading at the blue table.
Period 2 we started the writer's workshop. It went great. We did a mini lesson about using the Thesaurus...ask your kids what the word perambulate means, and why it doesn't sound like 'us'.
Period 3 we're going to use the computers to make graphs on create-a-graph. We're going to familiarize ourselves with the software, download pdf's and hopefully add them to our class folder on the cloud.
Period 4 Mrs. Chamberlain is coming in for me in the afternoon. She'll be taking the kids to gym.
Period 5 and 6 Mrs. Chamberlain is going to do some 'leaf rubbing' art with the class.
Have a great weekend...see you Monday!

November 2nd
Period 1 -we did a hidden picture puzzle for red light. Then we read the rest of The One And Only Ivan. It took a little longer than expected, but the kids wanted to finish it, and I am a sucker for read alouds. Then we had a little independent reading.
Period 2 -we started off with a little shared reading. We tried singing this song. The kids did a good job, Mr. Cross managed to mess up the guitar both times...just my way of showing them my brain is getting bigger. The rest of the period we worked on our Writer's Workshop.
Period 3 we had gym where we worked on our catching and targeting.
Period 4 we did a calming activity for Go Noodle and then examined and created bar graphs. We also watched a video on mean, median and mode.
Period 5 and 6 we're getting into our panther packs and finishing designing our rocks.
Please remember to donate $5 to our class basket to support Parent Council, if you already haven't.

November 2nd
Just a reminder.
The deadline for our holiday basket is quickly approaching.
So far we've only had 8 families donate...I know we can do more!
Parent council has requested that each item in the basket retail for $15 minimum...they are encouraging families to work together and pool their money.
Angela Boyd (Lily's mom) has graciously offered to organize this for our class. She suggested collecting $5 from each child, then she will go out and do our shopping (thank you!).
You can either send the money in to school with your child, and I'll make sure Angela gets it, or you can find Angela on the blacktop before or after school and hand her the money yourself.
Here is Angela's contact information:
email: angela.boyd99@sympatico.ca
text: 905.330.1233
This is a VERY worthy cause! Please consider donating as the money goes right back into the school. We're looking to get new technology and robotics equipment, furniture for the library and phase 3 of the learning garden!
Thanks to Angela and everyone for contributing.

November 1st
Happy first of the month.
You know what that means, seating change!
Period 1 we practised skip counting by 3's for red light. Then we did a little read aloud from The One and Only Ivan. We ended the period by using the random number generator to help pick our new seats.
Period 2 we had a reader's/writer's workshop, I got the chance to do some guided reading with an enthusiastic bunch of girls.
Period 3 we started our new unit on data management. We did a tally chart of eye colours in the class, then the kids worked in partners (or on our own) to display that data. Some interesting ideas. We looked at some of the different ways of categorizing Sophie and Eli's candy.
I'm sending home a sheet tonight, for the kids to hopefully organize their data.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith is teaching some health.
Period 5 Mrs. Djonovich is teaching music.
Period 6 We'll play a little skip counting game called Bizz, Buzz then I'll be teaching the kids (that want to participate) the A minor chord on the guitars. Then we'll probably have a little 'exploration' time after that.

October 31st
Happy Halloween!
It's only period 2, but here is what I have 'planned'. Keeping in mind, it's Halloween, and things could change.
Period 1 we did the Halloween parade (good to see so many of the parents there).
Period 2 -Mrs. Smith is doing something with the kids, social studies perhaps?
Period 3 I'm hoping to do some independent/guided reading and finish up a math sheet (rounding) from yesterday.
Period 4 I'm hoping to do our Writer's workshop, with a mini lesson focusing on 'edge of your seat' fiction writing.
Period 5 we're going to have a circle, just talking about being safe tonight. Then we'll attempt to finish our Alvin and the Chipmunks movie.
Period 6 we have the computers booked, so we might log onto 'code.org' to finish up, or keep the movie going...I'll have to play it by ear!
Today and tomorrow are fun days to be around happy children...but not always the easiest days to teach!
BE SAFE AND POLITE tonight.
Photo order forms coming home tonight too!

Wow....it's only period 4, but it's felt like a full day. Must be the day before Halloween! I can only imagine what the next 2 days are going to be like!!!
Period 1 we had our weekend round up.
Period 2 we read aloud and did some independent/guided reading
Period 3 we worked on rounding numbers to the 10, and 100. Then we had library.
Period 4 is social studies with Mrs. Smith
Period 5 we have the computers...we're going to explore 'coding' on code.org. Here is the direct link: https://studio.code.org/sections/HXCBFQ - they were given 'picture' passwords...hopefully they bring them home, or can remember them!
Period 6 we're going to finish up our Alvin and the Chipmunks movie from Friday and any other outstanding work.
Update: this class if full of potential programmers....they were awesome period 5!

October 27th
Happy Friday (and birthday to Ellene)!
We've had a great Friday so far.
Period 1 we made Ellene birthday cards and practise drawing a still life apple for red light. Then we read a couple of chapters from The One And Only Ivan. The kids had about 10 minutes of independent reading before period 2's assembly started.
Period 2 we had an assembly on bus safety.
Period 3 (now) the kids are currently finishing their 'author's chair' assignments on Google Classroom. Then on to prodigy for some rounding questions.
Period 4 we have gym.
Period 5 we're going to do some 'go noodle', then design some 'hand poppies' for our remembrance day wreath.
Period 6 I think we'll have a quick circle and finish the day watching an Alvin and the Chipmunks meet Frankenstein (provided we have a good rest of the day)
Have a great weekend everyone!
Please remember to read the Holiday Marketplace post and donate (if you haven't already).

A good day almost in the books.
Period 1 we finished up some rounding work for red light. Read aloud from The One And Only Ivan. Then the kids did the best job they've done all year reading independently! I didn't want to stop them, but we needed to get to the writer's workshop.
Period 2 we had our writer's workshop. The mini lesson today was on narrowing the focus of our stories.
Period 3 we gym and played a fun version of handball.
Period 4 we had math. We played this rounding game on the Smartboard. Then we played this game in partners.
Period 5 we have Mrs. Smith for social studies.
Period 6 we're going to do some mindfulness, calming activity on 'Go Noodle'. Then we're going to tidy up the classroom and maybe have a bit of free time...
Please remember to check out the 'Market Place' post from a few days ago....

I don't know why, but for some reason, I keep thinking today's Thursday....
Here is what we did today, on Wednesday!
Period 1: we practiced our shading some more and shared our wonderful still life artwork (I have to say, my shading is really improving). Then we read from The One And Only Ivan. We learned some sad news about how Ivan came to life at the Big Top Mall, and what happened to his parents. Then we read independently.
Period 2: Writer's workshop. We focused on 'backwards editing' and circling the 'tricky' words.
Period 3: we learned about rounding numbers to the closest 10 (and 100). We did a worksheet sort of like this. I found that this chart really helped some kids.
Period 4: Mrs. Smith, social studies.
Period 5: Mrs. Djonovich, music.
Period 6: Some shared reading, then some guitar...hoping to teach the C chord today (it's a bit of a trickier one for small hands.

October 24th
It's only period 2...but that's my only time to blog, so here we go.
Period 1 - For red light we came up with as many creative ways as we can to make questions with the answer equalling 100 (e.g., 110- 10 = 100). Then we read from The One And Only Ivan. We learned a little about Ivan growing up as a 'human'. Then we had some independent reading/guided reading.
Period 2 is Social studies with Mrs. Smith.
Period 3 We're going to do writer's workshop. Today's mini lesson will focus on using proper ending punctuation.
Period 4 we're going to go through some of our favourite centres from our subtraction-centres from last week.
Period 5 and 6 I'm going to do a little growth mindset activity with the kids. Then we'll do art. I had originally planned on looking at Henri Mattise today, but after reading the One And Only Ivan, I think I'm going to change and focus on 'still-life' drawing (mentioned in the book).
I'll show the kids this video on technique, and we'll have a go!

Holiday Market Place - Nov. 25th
Last week information went home about Orchard Park's big annual fundraiser, the Holiday Market Place. All Grades are in charge of creating a 'themed' basket.
The Grade 3's are to create an 'Arts and Crafts' basket.
Parent council are requesting that each item in the basket retail for $15 minimum...they are encouraging families to work together and pool their money.
Angela Boyd (Lily's mom) has graciously offered to organize this for our class. She suggested collecting $5 from each child, then she would go out and do our shopping (thank you!).
We're hoping to get all donations by Nov. 1st so we can put the basket together for Parent Council Nov. 10th.

October 23rd
Happy Monday everyone,
I was unfortunately away on Friday, but I heard great things from Mrs. Chamberlain.
We started our Monday off by writing me a letter for Red Light.
Then we had our usual 'Weekend Round UP'. Lots of pumpkin picking (and tv/video games).
Then I read from The One And Only Ivan, unfortunately something sad happened to Stella.
Then the kids read independently (some kids choose to read on Raz Kids).
Period 3 we did a quick addition and subtraction assessment...I asked the kids to choose as many digits as they feel comfortable with to solve an addition and subtraction problem.
Then we had library.
Period 4 (now) the kids have social studies with Mrs. Smith's supply teacher.
Period 5 we're going to finish up some math.
Period 6 I think I'm going to change the plans and give the kids some free time, because they've been so great so far today.

Another good day almost done. Happy Birthday to Violet.
I apologize for no post yesterday...I had to cover another class and didn't have my usual preparation period. So I didn't have time to post.
Here is what today looks/ed like:
Period 1 We made birthday cards for Violet for Red Light. Then we read a few chapters of The One And Only Ivan...which I really enjoy reading. Then the kids did independent reading while I did guided reading with Gillian, Charlotte, Miliana and Lily.
Period 2 we looked at strong 'leads' from some mentor authors. We discussed what made a strong lead, then we wrote one as a class. Then the kids went to their desks for the quiet 10 and did some writing!
Period 3 we had Gym...we continued to work on our throwing and balance with a variety of games.
Period 4 we did a rotation of our Subtraction Centres. Then we had to review that not every centre is going to be fun...and that sometimes at school we'll have to do work, not just the things we want to do.
Period 5 Mrs. Smith is teaching social studies.
Period 6 we're going to talk about goal setting and self reflecting for the progress reports. Then we'll fill out this sheet as a class. Any extra time will be used to finish up our Marc Chagall masterpieces...I hope.

A crazy (busy) day...but a great day.
I unfortunately don't have any time to blog about it...
Here is the good news. Our class did get a licence for Raz Kids...activated today!
Go to this website:
https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login
Choose the 'teacher's username: across9
Then find your child's name. Your child's password is the same as their password to access HDSB cloud (4 lower case letters)...they should know it by now...also written in their agendas.
Hopefully I'll be able to send home some information about it tonight.

http://www.123homeschool4me.com/2016/09/free-subtraction-bingo.html (if you want to play at home)
Then I have a couple of different subtraction worksheets (2 and 3 digit subtraction) for some additional practise.
Hopefully there will be a little time left over to talk about the Healthy Snack bins.
Period 5 I'm going to do a mindfulness activity with the kids. Then we'll finish up some our Marc Chagall work.
Period 6 we have the computers and we're going to log back into google classroom and try to finish up our stories from yesterday.

Happy Friday the 13th...hope you don't suffer from Triskaidekaphobia (ask you kids).
I had a workshop yesterday so I was unable to post.
As it's Friday, I don't have a lot of time to post today either.
Period 1 we had a read aloud and did some independent reading after our mad minute subtraction.
Period 2 we had computers. We talked about being responsible and critical and explored some of our friends favourite websites.
Period 3 (almost now) we're going to do some writing. We'll watch this video first.

October 11th
Hi everyone,
I'm going to try and squeeze a blog in today. As it's a Friday schedule, time is tight.
Period 1 -we did a math mad minute during announcements to see how many subtraction questions the kids could answer (and how quickly they could come in and get started). Then we read a little non-fiction about fears and phobias. Then we had some independent reading time.
Period 2 we did a quick lesson on using quotation marks, then the kids worked on adding the correct punctuation to 10 sentences. The class was working very hard and quietly on this activity.
It's only first break now, but here is how the rest of the day goes...I hope.
Computers period 3, we'll learn to navigate the cloud a bit more and practise adding links to documents.
Period 4 is gym.
Period 5 we're going to continue working on subtraction. Hopefully play a game with dice and subtracting from 100.
We might get to these worksheets for additional practise:
https://www.math-drills.com/subtraction/subtraction_0202_some_regrouping_002.php B
Period 6 I'm hoping to get out the guitars, and learn the C chord and at the end of the day maybe a little bit of free time if we keep up the hard work.

Thursday October 5th
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Good day today.
Here is what we did.
Period 1-talked about Terry Fox for red light. Then we read another chapter of The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight. The kids had a bit of time to read independently.
Period 2 -started off with a fire drill. Then we had enough time to talk about memories, and how we can use them to help us write. We had our writing time, but unfortunately we didn't have any time for Author's chair today.
Period 3 -we did some circuits and stations in Gym.
Period 4 -we finished up our Thanksgiving art and had a little free time.
Period 5 & 6 -we had the Terry Fox Run.
Here is a list of some flexible thinking math strategies that might help some of your kids with mental math (we're focusing on subtraction next week)

Wednesday October 4th
Here is what we did today!
Period 1 and 2 - we spent a long time doing our red light activity... coming up with different questions for the answer 50. Then we did a read aloud followed by some independent reading. Then we talked about writing letters during writing time (in order to minimize distractions)...unfortunately we didn't get around to writing time (again).
Period 3 we watched this movie and talked about the power of mistakes.
https://ideas.classdojo.com/i/growth-mindset-2
Then we discussed the idea of subtraction...we played a couple of games on the computer.
http://www.abcya.com/subtraction_game.htm
Here is a link to some more games if you want some extra practise at home.

Period 4 -Mrs. Smith is teaching Social Studies.
Period 5 -Mrs. Djonovich is teaching music.
Period 6 -I'm hoping to do a few drama activities. Ask your kids about Aliens, Tiger, Cow.
Just a reminder....tomorrow at the end of the day is the Terry Fox run!

October 3rd
Since it's Tuesday, it means I'm going to be blogging early (when the kids are with Mrs. Smith period 2). Apologies if plans change.
Here is what the day is suppose to look like:
Period 1 - Red light - what we're thankful for. Read aloud. Then Writer's Workshop.
Period 2 Social studies with Mrs. Smith.
Period 3 and 4 -we'll start off with the Author's Chair. Lena, Brady and Zane have all offered to share.
Then we'll do math. Starting off by watching this video. I'm really focusing on trying to improve the growth mindset of some of the kids who think they're not 'math people'.
Then we're going to keep working with multi digit addition with re grouping. Some kids will be trying 3 digit, others will opt for the challenge of 4 digit. If they finish, they can play a math game.
Worksheets:
Period 5 we'll do another Fire Drill practise...this time using the alternate exit. Then I'm planning on doing some Thanksgiving art. We'll brainstorm as a class...but I envision something sort of like this:

October 2nd
Happy October everyone.
We've had a good day so far.
Period 1 we started with our usual Monday morning weekend round up...lots of apple and pumpkin picking! Then we went through the process of the 'Great Seat Exchange'. The room has been rearranged and the kids have switched desks. It took a little longer than I intended, but we're all set now. We were able to read for 20 minutes, but we didn't have enough time to do our Writer's Workshop.
When I told the kids we were out of time, I heard a few groans and saw some sad faces...which makes me happy that the kids are looking forward to writing!
Period 3 we did a number talked (29 + 42 =) and shared all the various ways we solved that mentally. Then off to the library.
Period 4 (now), Mrs. Smith has the kids for social studies.
Period 5 we have the computers booked. I'm hoping most kids will finish the addition assignment I've set up on Prodigy.
Period 6 we'll be working on some math. In my hurry to clean up for open house, I have some how misplaced their 2 digit addition worksheets...we may have to redo them. I'm hoping to introduce 3 digit addition too to those that are ready to handle it.

September 29th
I'm going to try writing this before school today, as Friday's are generally pretty busy for me.
Thanks to everyone for coming out last night to Open House, it was great to meet so many of the parents.
To those of you who were not able, sorry I missed you, but my door is always open. Send me an email and we can arrange something.
Last night I put up an interview schedule for the conferences to take place after the Progress reports go home in November. If you didn't get a chance to sign up, or want to change your times, please do. If none of those days work for you, send me an email and I'm sure we can arrange an alternate time.
Here is the link to the schedule:

Lastly, thanks to the volunteers for helping out yesterday with yesterday's field trip!
OK...here is what is suppose to happen today!
Period 1- We'll have a circle, do read some of The Scarecrow Walks At Midnight (said in a creepy voice). Next, some independent reading.
Period 2 we'll work on our readers writers workshop. A quick mini lesson on how rearranging words in a sentence is a powerful revision technique. Then we'll write (they're so awesome at this)
Period 3 we have the computers. I'm going to give them some time to work on the 2 (and 3 for some) digit addition with assignments I've set up on math prodigy. There might be a little time for some 'free time' (it's Friday after all) towards the end of the period.
Period 4 we have gym.
Period 5 and 6 Orchard Park is going to have it's first Panther Pack day. We're going to mix the kids from all grades and both streams into groups and work on strengthening the community here at OP.

September 27th
Another good day so far...
We started off the day by talking about what makes a good partner and what makes a 'not-so-good' partner. We came up with some great ideas.
Then we read a couple of awesome chapters of The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight. Then we had some independent reading time.
After that we started our Writer's workshop...we looked closely at what makes R.L. Stine's writing so interesting. We were so in to our writing, that I lost track of time and the bell rang before our Author's Chair.
So after nutrition break, we had Grayson, Lara and Melissa share their wonderful writing.
We did a number talk then talked about 2 digit addition. I let kids choose their worksheet (easy, medium and hard...).
Quite a few kids are struggling with re-grouping...might not be a bad idea to practise this with your children at home if you notice them having trouble.
Period 4 Mrs. Smith came in for social studies.
Period 5 Mrs. Djononvich had the kids for music.
Period 6 We'll be finishing up some math.
REMINDER -Tomorrow we're on our field trip all day to Kelso conservation area for the Halton Water Festival. Please make sure your kids are prepared to be outside all day (hats, sunscreen, lunch). Also, tomorrow night is open house from 6 - 7:30...so I apologize in advance for the state of my room!

September 26th
Something is up with Weebly...and I've been thinking about switching to Blogger for a while now.
Why not start today?
I'm hoping that through blogger I can somehow send email notifications to parents of when I blog...I apologize...I'm still learning.
The PD day on a Monday has really messed me up!
Period 1 we had our weekend round up.
Period 2 we had some independent reading then our writers workshop. The kids are really getting into the spirit of the workshop. Some amazing writing already happening our class.
Period 3 Ayla, Maanit and Ellene shared the 'author's chair' to share some of their writing. We had library.
Period 4 (now) Mrs. Smith is teaching social studies...while I'm figuring out how to use this website?
Period 5 we have the computers. I've created some addition questions on Prodigy.
Period 6 we're going to be playing some math games to help us with our addition.
Any extra practise you can do at home to improve confidence (starting with addition, then moving to the dreaded subtraction) will definitely help your child!
