December 21st!

Thank you to everyone for spoiling me rotten.  I feel like I should be buying all of you gifts.

I'm very lucky.  Thanks again.

I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing holiday.  Looking forward to seeing you all in the new year.

Take care,

Mr. Cross

Last Post? Possibly?

Not sure what tomorrow will look like, so I think this might be my last post for 2018?

Reminder:  Tomorrow is an early dismissal.  The day ends 2:15!

Also, tomorrow the kids have convinced me to allow them to make it 'tech day'.  So AT YOUR OWN RISK,  your child may bring in 1 piece of tech.   Only appropriate games (no Fortnite).

Keep in mind, that the school is not responsible for any lost or stolen devices. The kids could also bring in a board game instead (old school tech.)

Finally,  I just want to take a moment to wish everyone a terrific break.  I've had an amazing 2018, and I am looking forward to 2019!  You guys, are amazing! Thank you for everything!

Dec. 20th

Here is what today is suppose to look like.

Period 1 -Health with Mrs. Coric.
Period 2 -reader's/writer's workshop

Period 3 -Grade 4's to French, Grade 3's are going to play some time games.
Period 4- The next 2 rounds of the Connect 4 Tournament

Period 5 and 6 -We're going to watch a Muppet Christmas (or possibly the Polar Express)

Wednesday, 19 December 2018

December 19th

Another strange day today...we're going to be missing a big chunk of our class today for the holiday choir field trip.

Here is what today is suppose to look like???

Period 1 we're going to finish up our Craft from yesterday.
Then we'll have reader's workshop.

Period 2 we're going to do some writing and hopefully some holiday graphing...working with coordinates.  The Grade 4's are going to go to French this period.

Period 3 and 4 we have the chromebooks.  I've assigned 'time questions' for both Grades on Math Prodigy.
When they're finished those questions I'm going to let them explore this website with many more 'time activities' on it.
https://www.mrnussbaum.com/clockworks/

Period 5 we're going to take our Grade 1 buddies to the gym for some bench ball soccer.
Period 6 instead of music (Mrs. Haynes will be on the choir field trip), Mrs. Evers is taking the class to the library to do their last book exchange of 2018.

Should be a fun day!

Reading Responses

Hey Parents...I'm sending home your child's 'Reader's Notebook'.

We've worked hard in these books for the last few weeks.

Each week your child wrote me a letter describing what they've been reading recently (summary) and shared some of their smart thinking.

I wrote letters back sharing what I liked, asking questions and giving them goals to work on for their next letter.

I encourage your to go through the book with your child.

I also think it would be SUPER AMAZING, and meaningful, if you kept this up over the holidays.  Have your child write a letter...but this time, instead of boring Mr. Cross writing them an illegible letter back, it's mom or dad (or grandma or uncle or sister or dog or whoever).

I've done it in the past and the kids generally love this (engages them in both reading and writing).

Here is a list of ideas we came up as a class to help us with our 'thinking'.

Here is the dates that letters are usually due...but you don't need to follow this schedule.

Happy holidays...happy reading and writing!

December 14th

I'm back!  Hopefully the flu has finished working it's magic in the Cross household...hopefully!

First off..I received an email from Mrs. Haynes saying 5 of my students still have not brought in their permission forms for Tomorrow's choir field trip.  Please, make sure your child has brought in their form (if they're part of the choir).

Here is what today is suppose to look like (this week is always a little chaotic).

Period 1 we're having a circle to talk about what I missed yesterday.  Then we'll read.
Period 2 we have the chromebooks, to help us write.

Period 3 we're going to play some math games.
Period 4 we'll do the next 2 rounds of our connect 4 tournament.

Period 5 Mrs. Whitehead (Sarah) is coming in to help me make a Holiday Craft with the kids.
Period 6 They have music.

December 14th

Happy Friday!

Today has been pretty good, so far!

Period 1 we had 'reader's workshop'.  The Grade 4's went to Grade 1 buddies to help out.
Period 2 we had the Chormebooks for writing.

Period 3 we were supposed to have Gym, but the Kindergarten concert was happening in there.  We also couldn't go outside due to the weather.  So we played Seatball, 7 up and Wax Museum and a bit of free time (right now).
Period 4 we're doing round 5 and 6 of the Connect Four tournament.

Period 5 we have Library.
Period 6 the class has French.

The class and I talked (at length) about having some sort of 'tech day' on the last day (next Friday 21st).  I've agreed, but we laid out a few rules:
1. Bring at your own risk, the school will not be responsible for any lost or stolen technology.
2. You can only bring and play 'appropriate for school games'
3. Be inclusive

I also told the class that you don't NEED to bring technology, but perhaps a board game might be a better option?  That's the option I would prefer!

December 12th

I will try one of my predictive blogs again.

Period 1:  For Red Light we're going to come up with some 'would you rather' questions.
Then we'll do our reader's writer's workshop.  Wednesday letters due!

Period 2:  Sarah is coming in to help with the guitars (I'm away all day tomorrow at a workshop, and I'm not sure Ms. Pinnington plays guitar).

Period 3 and 4 we're going to the Dress Rehearsal for the Play.  Some of our Grade 4's are in the play.

Period 5 we're going to start our new unit on 'time'...just looking quickly at the calendar.

Period 6 Mrs. Haynes has them for music.

Tuesday, 11 December 2018

December 11th

Just a quick thanks to Keeley and Gwyn's families for bringing in Christmas cookies.  They will both be getting A's in something for Christmas.

Today has been great so far.

Period 1 we did a word scramble for Red Light.  After that we tried singing some christmas songs.  Me on the guitar, them on vocals...we need A LOT more practise.  Then we talked about how we could use sticky notes to help us write our letter (jotting down notes and sticking them in our books).  Then we read.
Period 2 the students were able to choose to continue reading or start writing for this period while I finished my conferences.

Period 3 and 4 we had math.  The class was given some data, and then they had to construct their own double bar graph using that data.  Almost everyone worked hard and produced work they were proud of.  Early finishers played some connect 4.

Period 5 we're going to hopefully start round 3 (and 4) of our Connect 4 tournament.
Period 6 Mrs. Haynes has them for music.

Monday, 10 December 2018

December 10th

I can't believe that there is just 2 weeks left until Christmas!

I'm going to try a 'predictive blog' again.

Mrs. Perks is on Holidays for the next couple of weeks...so I'll have to teach the kids art...gulp!

Period 1 I'm going to read 'Two Bad Ant's' to the kids...and talk about how the author uses 'perspective' in the book.  Then we're going to create snowmen from different perspectives...sort of like this:
The kids have music and will continue art when they return period 2.

Period 3 we'll have our Monday Morning Weekend Round UP.  After that we'll look a little closer at double bar graphs and try creating our own.
Period 4 the Grade 4's are off to French.  The Grade 3's are going to use the chromebooks and work on Raz Kids and Prodigy.

Period 5 we'll have a period for reader's/writer's workshop (this is the last week for letters).
Period 6 is devoted to finishing up (art, math, missed connect 4 games from last week)

Friday, 7 December 2018

December 7th

Happy tired Friday.

Thanks to everyone for coming out last night...I thought we stole the show.

Thankfully we're keeping today kind of light.

Period 1 we read a few chapters of The One and Only Ivan (such a good book).  Then the kids had a nice long chunk of time to read (or work on their letter to me).
Period 2 (now) we've got the chromebooks for our Writer's workshop.  There is something about technology that really engages the students in writing...it's so quiet in here, you could probably hear a pin drop.

Period 3 we have gym.  We're going to continue on with Ultimate Handball.
Period 4 we're going to have a class discussion about our 'Connect 4' tournament...and play!

Period 5 we have the library...
Period 6 French

Have a terrific weekend everyone.

Thursday, 6 December 2018

December 6th

I can't believe it's December the 6th already.

So tonight's the big show...please drop your kids off around 6:15 in the classroom.  The show is scheduled to start at 6:30.

I believe Mrs. Haynes sent home a sheet last week with 'suggested clothing'...I can't seem to find my copy.

I'm not too sure what today will look like...as it's heavily focused on the Christmas concert.

I know that the 'dress rehearsal' is periods 1 and 2...possibly going into period 3.

And that the 'matinee' performance begins period 5 and goes until period 6.

At some point, I'm hoping to run my reader's/writer's workshop to get those Thursday letters in...and give my Friday people a chance to start their letters.

I also have another 'double bar graph' activity I'd like the kids to complete.  I think if we're lucky, there may be some Connect 4 sprinkled in there as well.  Thanks to the Lucas M's family for donating the use of 2 connect 4 for tomorrow.

Wednesday, 5 December 2018

December 5th

Here is what we've done so far today:

Period 1 we practised our drawing skills by attempting to draw Ivan...from our Class novel.
Then we had reader's workshop.

Period 2 we looked at using 'story mountains' as a tool to help us map out events in our writing.

Period 3 The Grade 4's went to French.  The Grade 3's stayed here and did an cut and sort activity on jobs in Ontario's 3 landform regions.

Period 4 We used the chromebooks to do some more coding...the class seems very into it so far.

Period 5 we have 'gym', but we don't actually have the gym.  So we'll be outside.

Period 6 Mrs. Haynes has them for music.

Tuesday, 4 December 2018

December 4th

Here's what today looked liked (so far).

Period 1, the kids had to come up with an answer to this question:  If you could give any one gift, to any one person (and money wasn't an issue), what would it be and who would it be for?

Then we talked about topics for our Reader's Notebooks.  Then we read/conferenced.

Period 2 we had writer's workshop.  We talked about answering anticipated questions in our writing.

Period 3 we went on to code.org...and participated in the hour of code...developing our own flappy bird game.
https://studio.code.org/sections/LGNNYP

Period 4 we had music (Mrs. Haynes needed to switch stuff around)...currently practising on the stage for the musical.

Period 5 we're looking at double bar graphs..when to use them, how to read them and create them.
Period 6 we'll be finishing up any unfinished work.

Monday, 3 December 2018

December 3rd

No prep today...Mrs. Haynes is busy with the musical...here is a super quick post.

Period 1 we did our great seating swap for December.  I like the new set up.  Then we did Art...we made some festive decorations for the school musical.
Period 2 we continued on with our art.

Period 3 We're going to do our weekend round up then spend the rest of the time doing reader's writer's workshop.
Period 4 the Grade 4's have French.  The Grade 3's are going to do a partner talk about the various landform regions.

Period 5 we're going to finish up our Range/Median/Mode math work from last week.
Period 6 is allocated to finishing up all outstanding work.

Friday, 30 November 2018

November 30th

What a great day we've had.

Period 1 -we finished our class read aloud, The Nose From Jupiter.  Then we had a huge chunk of time to read or write.

Period 2 we went outside, as we were told the men from the board were going to install a new wall mounted projector.  Unfortunately they had the wrong sort of projector.

Period 3 we went to the gym to play handball.
Period 4 we talked about starting a connect 4 tournament.  The kids were very excited.  We have six boards, but we need 5 more to make this happen.  Just wondering if anyone has any connect 4 games around the house they're looking to donate?  Or perhaps you could just send in your board every Friday and we'll return it with most of it's pieces?
Please let me know!

Period 5 we had Library.
Period 6 Mr. Woolley has both grades for French.

Have an amazing weekend everyone.

Thursday, 29 November 2018

November 29th

Good news:  The stink has dissipated...or at least we're all just used to it.  We're back in the classroom today.

Period 1 Mrs. Coric is teaching health.
Period 2 -I have a meeting with Mrs. Trainor, but I am hoping my supply teacher will teach a quick mini lesson on proofreading our letters in our reader's notebooks.

Period 3 Grade 4's have French with Mr. Woolley.  Grade 3's are going to show our Grade 1 buddies how awesome Google Maps is.
Period 4 we're going to do our writer's workshop.  Today's mini lesson will focus on thinking about questions your readers are likely to ask, and answering them.

Period 5 we're going to do the math from yesterday that we never got around to.  Learning about Mode and Medians.
Period 6 Mrs. Whitehead is coming in and we'll be playing some guitar!  Hopefully reviewing the Em/Am/D and if time we'll learn the G!  Our 2 new guitars came in...so we can have equal groups of 3!

Wednesday, 28 November 2018

(stinky) November 28th

That's right, it's a stinky day...and I mean stinky.

I walked into my classroom this morning around 8:15 and almost threw up!  The smell was so bad, I could barely breathe.  Mrs. Evers, Mrs. Trainor and Mr. Bayliss and I searched the room high and low looking for the source of disgustingness.

We think we found the culprit...an old milk spill hidden behind our Lego and ball bins...at least we think it was milk...it may have been green slime?

New rule:  No more slime at school (and if you spill milk...please tell me about it).

Needless to say, it has thrown our day out of sorts quite a bit.  We couldn't use our room (and still can't at this moment).  We started period 1 by going immediately to Mr. Woolley's room.  I read aloud as the class sketched.

Period 2, I heroically fought through the smell and went into the room to get the kids their reading response books.  Then we went to the Library to read (and write our letters).  That's what we're doing right at this moment...the kids are getting a really nice long chunk of time to read today.

Period 3 The Grade 4's are suppose to go to French ...but I think that no supply teacher picked up Mr. Woolley's job today...so both Grades will probably stay together in the French room (because I just checked, and it still smells bad in our room).  I think we'll try and do social Studies (Grade 4's practising the provinces and capitals and the Grade 3's working on investigating the 3 different landform regions in Canada)

Period 4 I am hoping to teach both Grades about the mode and median of sets of Data.
Reviewing mode:
Grade 4’s introducing median
https://www.math-salamanders.com/image-files/free-median-worksheets-find-the-median-1a.gif (worksheet)

Period 5 we have gym, we'll be working on more throwing and catching skills.
Period 6 we have Mrs. Haynes for the performing arts.

Fingers crossed we get access to our room soon!  Your kids are showing terrific resiliency (so far) today.

Tuesday, 27 November 2018

November 27th

Happy Tuesday.

Here's what our day looked like (so far)

Period 1 we read aloud a chapter from The Nose From Jupiter.  Then we had some reading time after I shared Evie's awesome reading response.  Today's mini lesson we came up with ideas they could write about to help them with their 'thinking'.

Period 2 we had writer's workshop.  The mini lesson was all about when (and how) to use periods in our writing because if you don't you end up creating a really, really long run on sentence that nobody wants to read because you never have a moment to even take a breath.

Period 3 we looked at using (and choosing) an appropriate scale on our bar graphs.

Period 4 we worked on finishing up our OP art (while listening to Christmas Music).  We even had time to practise our 2 songs for the upcoming concert.  Please feel free to practise at home too:

Snow and Heat Miser

Santa Clause is Coming to Town

Period 5 we have the computers booked...we're going to do a little social studies.  The Grade 3's are going to continue to research their 'never hear of' city in Ontario and make an 'insta-snap' post of it.  Grade 4's are going to play a quick match up game of the Provinces and Territories and their capital cities...any extra time we might use to play Prodigy.

Period 6 they have music with Mrs. Haynes.

Monday, 26 November 2018

Monday November 26th

Booo!  Another gross, rainy Monday.

Not a problem for us...because we're going to have fun regardless.

Here is what today should look like.

We just had a quick circle to talk about OP art and complementary colours.  Then I read a chapter from The Nose From Jupiter.

Mrs. Haynes just came to sweep them away to music.

Period 2 we'll actually start work on creating the OP art.

Period 3 we'll do our weekend round up and then Reader's Workshop for whatever time is left.

Period 4 the Grade 4's are off to French and the 3's will stay here to more thoroughly examine a Ontario community.

Period 5 I'm hoping that the kids can 'present' the bar graphs they've been working on.

Period 6 after being inside all day, I think we'll have a little free time to play some board games.

Thursday, 22 November 2018

November 22nd

Here is another one of those predictive blogs:

Period 1 the kids have Health with Mrs. Coric.
Period 2 we're going to continue on with our Reader's Workshop.  I'll share Emma J's letter from yesterday.  All my Thursday (and Friday because of the PD day) people will finish their letters to me.

Period 3 the Grade 4's are off to French.  The Grade 3's are going to be looking at the different Landform regions in Canada.
Period 4 I'm going to allocate to 'finishing up'.  We've got Bar Graphs, Letters, Advertisements and artwork all on the go.

Period 5 we're going to spend cleaning and organizing the classroom and our desks...getting ready for the progress interviews.  I'm also going to take some time to figure out what exactly we're doing for the Christmas Concert...and hopefully get a practise in.
Period 6 we'll start watching a Roald Dahl movie, James and the Giant Peach...with a 'critical lens' on.  We'll look at the images, listen to the sound and talk about the intended audience.

After that it's interview time!

Enjoy the PD day tomorrow!

Wednesday, 21 November 2018

Wednesday November 21

Here's what we did today:

Period 1 we wrote about our thoughts on Bullying for red light.  Then we read aloud a chapter of The Nose From Jupiter.  After that we talked about some awesome reading responses that Carlee and Tennessee wrote.   Then we had some reading time.

Period 2 we went to the book fair to do some shopping.  Thanks to the Moskal family for the generous donation (and to mom for helping out today).

Period 3 The grade 4's went to French while the Grade 3's answered some bar-graph questions on Math Prodigy.

Period 4 the class voted to work on their advertisements (instead of their bar graphs).  They're doing a really good job of inserting implied messages into their ads.

Period 5 we had the anti bullying assembly.

Period 6 Mrs. Haynes took them to music

"Should I bring my kid to the interview?"

I've had a few parents email me, asking whether or not they should bring their children to the interview.

I leave that decision completely in the hands of the parents.

If you would like your child to attend, that is entirely up to you.

Some parents prefer to talk 'privately' with the teacher, and I also understand that too.

Whatever works best for you and your family....I'll be here regardless!

See you all soon,

Adam

Tuesday, 20 November 2018

November 20th

Here is what our busy day looked like:

Period 1 we had a few Grade 6's come in do some 'book talks' to hype some of the featured books at the book fair.  Then we read another chapter from A Nose From Jupiter.  After that we looked at some of the 'reader's letters' from yesterday and what we liked about them.  Then we had our reader's workshop.

Period 2 we had our Writer's workshop.  We looked at using pronouns correctly.

Period 3 we looked closely (and critically)  at some more ads and tried to figure out the implied messages.  Then the kids started thinking about making their own ads...and how they'd send an implied message.

Period 4 we made a birthday bar graph for the class. Then the kids continued working on their own bar graphs from last week.

Period 5 we went to browse at the book fair...coming home with our 'wish lists'.

Period 6 they're off to music with Mrs. Haynes.

Note:

Interview schedule:

Also, I believe the office is collecting the order forms for the  Big Box Fundraiser tomorrow!

PINK SHIRT day tomorrow too!

Here is a copy of my interview schedule...please let me know if you are unable to make your date/time:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1f-EnhXyWw5S4ticp1gigBBrIFc3dbbQjRqW7mo3WPQ0/edit?usp=sharing

Today is suppose to look like this:

Period 1 Mrs. Perks is here to help with art...we're going to be doing Keith Haring inspired art work today.  I'm going to show the kids these websites so they get an idea of who he is, and his style.
http://www.haringkids.com/master_k_bio.htm - cool Website

We have music for 30 minutes

Period 2 we'll continue on with our art.

Period 3 we're going to do reader's/writer's workshop.

Period 4 Grade 4's are off to French, the Grade 3's will be doing some Social Studies...continuing to use google maps to investigate Ontario.

Period 5 I'm going to try and get a handle on where we are in math and our Data Management Unit.

Period 6 I'll hand out the progress reports, we'll talk about goals and hopefully clean up the room a little.

Tuesday, 13 November 2018

November 13th

I'm just at school now...getting things together for a supply teacher.

I have a family emergency and I will most likely be out of the building for the next couple of days.

I apologize, but I probably won't be able to get back to the blog until I return.

See you soon (remind your kids to stay awesome).

Monday, 12 November 2018

November 12th

Here is what I hope today will look like.

Period 1 we did a real 'head scratcher' of a math problem for RED light.  We had a good conversation about perseverance.   Then Mrs. Haynes came to take them away to music.

Period 2 we're going to be doing some Kadinsky inspired art work.  I'm going to show this video first to introduce the artist:
Period 3 we're going to watch 2 videos...Mason playing drums and Keeley and Tennesse's Cheer Routine.  After that we'll do our weekend round up.

Period 4 Grade 4's have french.  Grade 3's are going to look at the landform regions of Ontario...and hopefully use the chromebooks to investigate google maps and some cool places in Ontario.

Period 5 we'll do a little shared reading about the provinces of Canada:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBQ5ZhHlkkY
Then we'll do some math, looking at changing step and growing patterns.

Period 3 - Hopefully we can use the gym to continue on with our soccer unit.
Period 4 -We'll keep working on Patterning with math...looking at changing step, and same step patterns.

Period 5 - We have Library.
Period 6 - Mr. Woolley has both Grades for French.

Have great weekends everyone.

Wednesday, 7 November 2018

November 7th

It's only first break...but I find it much easier to blog earlier, rather than later...so here we go.

Period 1 and 2 were awesome.

We started off by just finishing up some outstanding work.  We worked on our poppy mosaic art, finished our book vs. movie Desperaux work and also worked on yesterday's math/patterning work.  When we were done all those things we had some time on the chromebooks (if they wished) to read or write.  Everyone was really engaged and worked well this morning.

Period 3 the Grade 4's are off to French...the Grade 3's are writing a very brief quiz on forces.
Period 4 we have the chromebooks again, we'll be using them to finish our Canadian online scavenger hunt.  If there is any extra time, we'll be answering some prodigy patterning questions.

Period 5 we have gym.  We'll do some more 'footwork' drills and hopefully have some time to play a game or two.
Period 6 Mrs. Haynes has them for music.

Tuesday, 6 November 2018

November 6th...

Another rainy day!!!

I'll be away this afternoon, so I'm going to blog first thing this morning...Here is what I hope today looks like:

Period 1 we're going to do movie/book comparison for Tale of Despereaux for Red Light.  After that, we'll do a little shared reading by singing this song about the provinces of Canada:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aWFVNWO7U9MzdnJOLJZrKq0tQE_bPSmIYBhC6ks6-9c/edit?usp=sharing -lyrics

Then we're going to do our reader's workshop/guided reading.

Period 2 we'll have our writer's workshop, looking at using a thesaurus to enhance our writing (but not too much).

Period 3 we'll look a little closer at patterning. Specifically growing and shrinking patterns.
Period 4 Mrs. Pinnington will take over, and the kids are going to try to do some work out of their math textbooks (for the first time)

Period 5 is going to be allocated to 'finishing up'. First math, then poppy mosaics.
Period 6 the class has music.

**Grade 3's will have a very quick 'forces quiz' tomorrow...I hope they're familiar with that study sheet that wen home last week!  study sheet.

Monday, 5 November 2018

November 5th

Happy Rainy Monday (again).

Here is what I'm hoping happens today.

Period 1 we'll talk a little about Remembrance Day.  Then Mrs. Perks is going to help us make mosaic poppies tearing and gluing paper.

They'll go to music for a bit during this period and come back Period 2.

I hope to finish the poppies during Period 2.

Period 3 we'll do our 'Weekend Round Up' then do our next lesson on Media messages (implied or overt).

Period 4 the Grade 4's go to French.  The Grade 3's will be working on typing up some of their stories in their literacy folder.

Period 5 we'll have our Literacy period.  The kids will read or write while I'm doing some guided reading.

Period 6 I'm hoping to finish up The Tale of Desperaux movie from Friday.

**November 8th the Grade 4's are walking to Aldershot for the social networking safety presentation.

October 31st

Happy Halloween!

I'm going to try and do an early post...because this day (and usually the next) are a little chaotic.

A couple of things I want to post before I forget:

GRADE 3'S - Last Swim to Survive lesson is tomorrow!  Bring your swim suit!
GRADE 4'S - Walking permission form going home today (it's yellow) about a field trip to Aldershot High School on November 8th for a Social Networking Safety Presentation.

Period 1 and 2 today is the Halloween Parade/assembly...hopefully we can do some reading and writing at some point?

Period 3 - Grade 4's to French - Grade 3's are going to go over a Science/forces study sheet...quiz next week some time.  Hopefully use the chromebooks afterwards for some prodigy patterning.
Period 4 -We'll finish presenting our STEM projects.

Period 5 -we have the gym.  We'll keep working on our soccer skills.
Period 6 -Mrs. Haynes has them for music.

October 30th

Another good day (almost in the books)!

Here is what we've done so far.

Period 1 we had a great Halloween discussion...mostly about what we can we're dressing up as.  Then we read some Despereaux and had some independent reading/guided reading.

Period 2 my guided reading took a little longer than planned so we ended up only having a bit of time to write after my mini lesson on creating edge-of-your-seat leads.

Period 3 we started by evaluating 2 more learning skills, Collaboration and Self Regulation.  Then we explored patterns..  The kids had too much fun exploring all the manipulatives we have in the class to make patterns.  They did this for quite some time and made some awesome creations...take a look:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12gLULPOixRLq4djKd6T3ofzZidysGYqm?usp=sharing
That lasted right until second break (which is now).

Period 5 I'm hoping to keep the amazing 'collaboration' alive by finishing up our magnetic race track...possibly present them.
Period 6 we have music with Mrs. Haynes.

**Tomorrow Halloween parade/assembly first 2 periods.  Come dressed/prepared to go outside.  Also, no masks or weapons.  Remember all costumes go away at first break...

***Thursday is our last Swim to Survive day for the Grade 3's.

Monday, 29 October 2018

October 29th

I'm going to try and blog before school as today should be quite a busy day.

We welcome back Mrs. Perks this morning...she's going to help us with some pumpkin art, like this:
Period 1 the kids go to music.
Period 2 we'll continue to work on our art.

Period 3 we'll have a meeting at the carpet and do our Weekend Round Up.  Then we'll do our reader's/writer's workshop.

Period 4, Mrs. Pinnington is coming in for me, as I'll be 'mentoring a new teacher'.  The Grade 4's are off to French.  The Grade 3's have the chromebooks and are going to practise logging into Raz Kids and making sure their levels are ok.

Period 5 Both Grades are working on an 'All About Ontario' scavenger hunt, using the chromebooks.

Period 6 Mrs. Pinnington is going to decided to either introduce our next math unit on patterning, or possibly let the kids have a little free time!

***This week:
Halloween parade on Wednesday
Last Swim to Survive for the Grade 3's on Thursday!

October 26th

Happy Friday....2 more periods to go!

Period 1 the Grade 4's helped out Mrs. Ever's and their Grade 1 buddies, the Grade 3's watched this Science Max episode I saw last night when I was watching TV with my son...it's about Gravity AND Buoyancy!

Period 2 we had our reader's/writer's workshop/guided reading.

Period 3 we brushed up on our soccer skills and played some more 'bench ball'.  Evie led us in stretches.

Period 4 we did another page of our learning skills reflection sheet...and had some free time...they deserved it.

Period 5 we have Library...and we'll use the remaining time to finish off our Magnetic Race Tracks.

Period 6 both Grade's have French.

**Photo Day Proofs going home today

***Have an awesome weekend!!!!

October 25th

I can't believe it's almost November!

I will have to do one of my 1st period predictive blogs again today.

Period 1 the kids have Mrs. Coric for heatlh.
Period 2 we're going to do a reader's/writer's workshop...student choice (after our read aloud)

Period 3 Grade 4's to French...Grade 3's to Swim to Survive!...but first we quickly discussed the 6 types of forces we've been looking at for science (buoyancy, gravity, friction, magnetic, muscle and static electricity.

Period 4 Grade 4's to help Mrs. Evers' Grade 1's use the chromebooks, Grade 3's still swimming.

UPDATE:
Our bus ended up being about 15 minutes late...which pushed everything back.

Period 5 we got back, and the Grade 3's needed to eat. (the Grade 4's wanted to stay with Mrs. Evers for a few more minutes)  After we ate, we all went outside for 12 minutes.  After that we came inside for a school wide 'big crunch'.

Period 6 Mrs. Bovaird came to replace me...I didn't have time to start our art lesson, so she is currently reading a story to the class and they're going to do a quick art activity to go along with it...I am exhausted!

Wednesday, 24 October 2018

October 24th

Another great day...half way done!

Here's what it's looked (and looks) like.

Period 1 for Red Light we answered our classmates addition and subtraction question. Then we read aloud The Tale of Despereaux.
After that I did guided reading while Mrs. Moskal read with a few kids.
Period 2 we did our Writer's workshop.  Today's mini lesson was about zooming in and focusing on one small moment.

Period 3 the Grade 4's went to French. The Grade 3's stayed here and we logged into Raz Kids for the first time.
Period 4 (updated)...we ended up using the chromebooks...both Grades got to familiarize themselves with 'RAZ KIDS'.

Period 5 we're going to the gym.  I'm hoping to start teaching the class some basketball fundamentals.
Period 6 we have music with Mrs. Haynes.

***All students now have access to RAZ KIDS...our teacher Log in is: across9.
Everyone's password is the same 4 letters (lower case) they use to log in to the Halton Cloud.

***Swim to Survive tomorrow for Grade 3's...remember your bathing suit and towels.

Before I Forget...

SWIM TO SURVIVE TOMORROW FOR THE GRADE 3'S!!!!

IT'S OUR SECOND LESSON...ONE MORE NEXT THURSDAY.

BRING YOUR BATHING SUITS (PREFERABLY UNDER YOUR CLOTHES).

Tuesday, 23 October 2018

October 23rd

Here is what we did today...

We started the day by coming up with our own addition and subtraction questions for red light (we'll answer them tomorrow).

Then we had a long discussion about conserving paper...and we as a class decided we needed 'sketch books' to help us organize our desks and save the 'fresh paper'.

Then I read a chapter of Despereaux.
Then we had independent reading while I did some guided reading.

Period 2 we had our writer's workshop, today's mini lesson was about 'backwards editing'.

Period 3 and 4 we started a 'learning skills self assessment'.  We looked at Responsibility and Organization.  Then we got to play subtraction games while I worked with a small group at the guided reading table.

Period 5 we packed our bags, emptied out our mailboxes...some subtraction work is coming home (doesn't need to be finished...but might be good to correct!!!).  I'm also sending home their super-amazing self portraits, because our super-amazing cubist trees are decorating our hallway now.

We had a bit of time to work on our STEM magnetic race tracks before they went to music.

Period 6 Mrs. Haynes has them for music.

***This Thursday Grade 3's are off to the pool again for our second (of three) Swim to Survive lesson***

Monday, 22 October 2018

October 22nd

I wasn't at school on Friday...so I wasn't able to blog...but Ms. Pinnington left a note saying the class was amazing...which is so nice to hear (although, I already knew that).

I'm here a little early today, so I'm going to try an blog before school...see how that goes.

Period 1 - I'm going to do a little check in, see where we're at with our cubist autumn trees.  If we're done, we'll be moving on to some OP art.  If not, we'll keep on plugging away on our trees.

Mrs. Haynes takes them away for music for 30 minutes.

Period 2 we'll have our 'weekend round up' and share the highlights from our weekends.  Then use what little time we have left to read/or write.

Period 3 we're going to keep practising our subtraction.  I'm hoping the class will write down some of their own questions on big chart paper, and solve each other's questions.

Period 4 the Grade 4's go to French.  The Grade 3's are going to stay here.  We're going to continue to build upon on subtraction skills using the chromebooks

Period 5 we're going to do some Science.  The Grade 4's are going to do a buoyancy experiment and the Grade 4's are going to investigate minerals online.

Period 6 we'll use to finish up any outstanding work.

Thursday, 18 October 2018

October 18th

Here comes another early/predictive blog.

Today should be fun, and quite possibly a little chaotic.

Period 1 Mrs. Coric taught health.
Period 2 The Grade 3's are working with the Grade 5 using Ozobots in the library with Mrs. Pauls.  The Grade 4's writing their last section of the Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test.

Period 3 The Grade 4's have French.  The Grade 3's are off to the pool for our first Swim to Survive lesson.
Period 4 the Grade 4's are helping out our Grade 1 friends next door with Mrs. Evers. The Grade 3's will be finishing their swimming lesson and heading back to School with me.

Period 5 We'll do a quick read aloud.  Then have some reader's/writer's workshop time.  After that I hope to finish up some subtraction work with the class.
Period 6 Mrs. Whitehead (Lucas' mom) will be coming in to give me a hand teaching the class the A minor chord.  This will be a nice treat for the class, to have someone who actually possesses guitar skills help teach the class.

Wednesday, 17 October 2018

October 17th

Here is what today looked like:

Period 1 -Grade 4's wrote part 2 of the CCAT while the 3's did some Prodigy with Mrs. Pauls in the Library.
Period 2 -we had a reader's/writer's workshop...kids got to choose.

Period 3 -Grade 4's went to French, the Grade 3's did 'computer buddies' with their Grade 1 friends.  They made Halloween safety posters.
Period 4 -we looked at the standard algorithm for subtraction and tried some of these sheets from yesterday:
Easy
Medium
OR Super Challenge

Period 5 we have Quincy Mack (not sure about the spelling) coming in to do a presentation/assembly for the whole school.
Period 6 Mrs. Haynes has them for music.

-I had quite a few kids struggling with subtraction today...might not be a bad idea to do a little extra practise at home to build confidence!

***REMINDER -GRADE 3'S SWIM TO SURVIVE TOMORROW***

SWIM TO SURVIVE -TOMORROW -GRADE 3'S ONLY!

Before I forget to post...remember...tomorrow is SWIM TO SURVIVE for the Grade 3's.  Bring a change of clothes, towel and anything else you might need (e.g., hair brush).

In years past, I've found many kids prefer to wear their swimsuits under their clothes to school...so they can change quickly at the pool.

Obviously after swimming they change into their dry clothes.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Tuesday, 16 October 2018

October 16th *updated*

I got to school a little early today, so I'll attempt to do one of my 'predictive posts' that usually doesn't turn out the way I planned!

We'll start period 1 with a coloured-square subtraction 'red-light' activity.  Then we'll have a quick circle, and read a bit of Despereaux.  We'll have some independent reading time and we're going to discuss 'talking about our reading'.

Period 2 we'll do our 'writer's workshop' and today's mini lesson will focus on using quotation marks when someone is speaking.

Period 3 the Grade 3's are going to go to the library with Mrs. Pauls...I believe they'll be working on their 'my blueprint'.  The Grade 4's are going to do round 1 of the 'Cognitive Abilities Test' with me in our room.

Period 4 we're going to do some math.  We'll be reviewing the 'standard algorithm' for subtracting numbers.  I've put together easy/medium/hard worksheets...

Period 5 we'll try and do the art that we didn't get to yesterday.

Period 6 Mrs. Haynes has them for music.

Here is the second take of Island In the Sun the kids did yesterday...much better we all agree.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/10Ve32IQ4z_tSle2EjwRzLZijOCUCl6p-/view?usp=sharing

AND FINALLY...reminder:  Grade 3's are off to Angela Coughlan Pool on Thursday for our first (of 3) swim to survive lessons!

***UPDATE...picture day took a lot longer than I had planned...most of Period 4.  Mrs. Haynes wasn't able to teach the kids last period, so they stayed here and continued to work on their art!

Monday, 15 October 2018

October 15th-Picture day tomorrow!

It's only period 1 and the kids are at music...but here is what I'm hoping happens today...gulp!

Period 2 -we'll have a community circle and share the highlights from our weekends in 'Weekend Round Up'.  Then I'm hoping to start some autumn cubist art:

Period 3 we'll do some math...we'll play a game, called roll to 0 and do a worksheet to remind us about subtraction:
Game: Roll to 0

Period 4 the Grade 4's are off to French.  The 3's are going to do a buoyancy experiment...or a subtraction task on prodigy.

Period 5 we're going to attempt to re-record our take of Island in the Sun and finish up some math/art.
Period 6...if all things go well, we'll probably have a little free time to end our rainy Monday.

NOTE:!!!!!  PICTURE DAY TOMORROW, that means brush your hair (if you're lucky enough to have some).

October 12th

Happy Friday!

It's been a great day so far.

Here's what we did.

Period 1 we had student choice reader's/writer's workshop.  The Grade 4's went to their first 'reading buddies' with Mrs. Ever's Grade 1's.

Period 2 we looked at subtraction and talked about what it really means and looks like using these websites:
-using a numberline
-hundreds chart

Then we had fun playing subtraction games on this website:

Period 3 we warmed up for gym with Emma J leading some stretches.  Then it was Everybody's It Dodgeball and Dr. Dodgeball afterwards.

Period 4 was all Science, all the time.  The Grade 4's learned all about the rock cycle while the Grade 3's learned about Buoyancy.

Period 5 we went to the Library.
Period 6 the kids are off to Mr. Woolley for French.

Have terrific weekends everyone.

***Note - Picture day is on Tuesday...Grade 4's are doing their CCAT testing next week (Tues/Wed/Thurs)...Grade 3's Swim to Survive next Thursday

Thursday, 11 October 2018

October 11th

Happy Friday...sort of...at least it's a Friday schedule today.

Here is what we did:

Period 1 we started off reading independently, as we had Mrs. Burns come in and do a little coaching for Mr. Cross.
Period 2 the Grade 4's did their final day of 'practise' for the Cognitive Abilities Test (happening next week Tues./Wed./Thurs.).  The Grade 3's were rocking the writer's workshop during this time.

Period 3 we went to the gym, Gwyn led us in some stretches.  We warmed up with Cat and Mouse and finished with a good ol' game of Spud.
Period 4 we went to the library to work with Mrs. Pauls on 'My Blueprint', the online portfolio.

Period 5 we had a whole class discussion about behaving appropriately and responsibly when using technology and while outside at recess.  Then, they got to have the free time I promised them yesterday (but never had time for).

In the chapter of The Tale of Despereaux that we read today, we read all about consequences.  Today's free time was the consequence of a great week so far (lots of terrific collaboration).

Period 6 everyone goes to Mr. Wooley's for French.

*I forgot...here' s a link to our first recording of Island in the Sun...we're a bit quiet....but we've discussed it, and we'll attempt to improve for our next 'take'.

Working on our Magnetic Race Tracks...don't want to stop their eagerness/enthusiasm.  They're really working well as groups.

Hope these pictures work:

Wednesday October 10th

Well...although it's technically Wednesday, we're operating on a 'Monday' schedule...so I'm going to have to blog period 1...my only break.

Here is what I hope happens.

Period 1 we finished up some math and did some Tale of Despereaux activities for Red Light.  I read 3 chapters from Despereaux as the kids were working quietly.

Mrs. Haynes just came and took them to music.

Period 2 the Grade 3's are going to do their 'Writer's workshop' (quietly) while the Grade 4's do their second practise session for the Cognitive Abilities Tests.

Period 3 We'll do some independent reading, Mrs. Burns is going to a little 'reading coaching' for Mr. Cross with one of my guided reading groups.

Period 4 The Grade 4's are going to French and the Grade 3's are going to stay here and present their 'Forces' Posters. We'll talk about each of the words.  Then I hope to watch a video on Buoyancy.

Period 5 I'm hoping to introduce subtraction and Period 6 I'd like to continue working on our STEM magnetic race tracks.**

**However, I know sometime this afternoon we'll be having another fire drill practise AND going to the church to practise an Emergency Evacuation...I do not know how long those activities will take.

***I have 10 of 15 Grade 3 Swim to Survive forms...still waiting for 5 more to go on this FREE trip!

Tuesday, 9 October 2018

October 9th...

Another great day in the books...even if our brains (including mine) are not working at full capacity after all that time off.

Here's what we did.

Period 1we had a circle and shared the highlights from our extended weekend.
Period 2 we read a little bit, and talked about how we choose our books.  Then we wrote for our writer's workshop.

Period 3 I went with the Grade 4's to the library to learn about the CCAT test they'll be writing next week.  We did a few sample questions with all the other Grade 4's.  The 3's stayed with Mrs. Pauls and worked on My Blueprint.

Period 4 we finished up some older math...We're about to begin work on Subtraction.  Keep practicing the addition at home too!

Period 5 we did a bit of a desk clean out and watched a Bill Nye Video on Magnetism...to keep us 'geared up' for our STEM projects.
Period 6 Mrs. Haynes took them away for music.

***still need some swim to survive forms from my Grade 3's.

Thursday, 4 October 2018

October 4th

It's Thursday - which means time for my pre-school blog.

We're going to have a bit of a different day, as many of the kids are off to the cross country meet.  We wish them luck.

Period 1 - Mrs. Coric is teaching health.
Period 2 -we'll do a read aloud, some shared reading, and have a nice chunk of time to do some writing.

Period 3 the 4's are off to Mr. Woolley for some French, the Grade 3's are going to create a Google Drawing with the 'chromebook buddies'.
Period 4 we'll continue to build our addition skills with some 2 and 3 digit addition.

Period 5, I suspect some of the kids will be back from Cross Country, and we may be able to continue to work on our STEM magnetic tracks.
Period 6 I'm hoping to teach the class how to properly use the Speed Stacks and at the end of the day practise playing that Em chord and possibly introducing the Am!

*Days like these, where I'm missing a lot of kids are often subject to change-on-the-fly!

**Tomorrow's a PD day...don't send your kids to school.  Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

***Grade 4's are getting the results of the EQAO today in their mailboxes.

Wednesday, 3 October 2018

October 3rd

Alright, a little break from the rain, for once!

Here's what today looked like.

Period 1 we read a little from Despereaux.  I think the kids are enjoying it as much as I am...just for fun, try using the word 'perfidy' at the dinner table tonight.  See if your child can define it!

Then we read, and talked about how good readers think, and use 'thinking marks' when they read.

Period 2 we had a shorter Writer's Workshop...but at least that we wrote (most of us)!

Period 3 the Grade 4's were in French while the 3's continued to work on their Force Vocab Posters.

Period 4 we started work on our STEM magnetic car tracks....everyone was collaborative and seemed enthusiastic!

Period 5 we had gym...we played some 'cat and mouse' and some 'elves, giants and wizards'.

Period 6 everyone is off to music...and I have to do some of the marking that's piling up on my desk!

NOTE- tomorrow is cross country for some...also, Grade 3's Swim to Survive field trip permission form is coming home today (free trip!).

Tuesday, 2 October 2018

October 2nd

Another Rainy Day...

Here's what we did today.

Red light we tried to remember as many characters as possible from Wayside School...congrats to Tahura for getting about 20 characters.

Then we read and did some shared reading....look for the recording of Island in the Sun to be posted one day soon...we're almost ready to record.

Period 2 we had our Writer's workshop.  Today's mini lesson was about varying sentence structure, just be reordering the words.

Period 3 & 4 we watched the Khan academy's explanation of re-grouping:
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/arith-review-add-subtract/arith-review-adding-carrying/v/example-adding-with-carrying
Then we played some 'Race to Flat' (see Friday's Post).  The kids did such an awesome job with that today.  I just had to reward them by letting them finish our episode of Wayside 'parent/teacher meetings'.

Period 5 we explored the school's supply of magnets for a long time...discovering all sorts of things.  Then we touched base on our next STEM activity...creating a magnetic car track.

Period 6 we had Music.

NOTE: Tomorrow's the last day to donate money to the Terry Fox Run.

I didn't get a chance today before music to hand them out...but tomorrow there will be a Swim to Survive permission form going home for just the Grade 3's.

Monday, 1 October 2018

October 1st

Happy Rainy October....

The kids are at music now, but here's what I'm hoping happens today.

When they get back from music, we're hopefully going to start painting our Laural Busch inspired cats.  Mrs. Perks is here to help me with the scary job of giving kids paint!

That should take us close to first nutrition break.

Period 3 we have a quick circle...do a shared reading of Island in the Sun again. Then we'll write another letter to Kate Di Camillo.  The kids will then choose to either read, or write for the workshop.

Period 4 the Grade 4's are off to French...The Grade 3's will be working on Google Drawing to make up a poster for our Forces vocabulary.

Period 5 we'll do our monthly seating swap...I've rearranged the desks.  Then we'll continue practising our addition...I think I'll get the Grade 3's to teach the Grade 4's 'Race to 100'..a game we played last Friday.

Period 6 after being trapped inside for the whole day, I think we might need a little break.  We'll finish watching Wayside and hopefully have a little free time.

Friday, 28 September 2018

September 28th...

Today should be fairly chaotic...as my Grade 4's are on their field trip to Ancaster, and I'll have Mrs. Sylvester's Grade 5's...teaching the 3/5 split today!

I'm not sure I'll find another time to blog today...here's what I'm hoping happens.

Period 1 - We'll do this worksheet for Red Light:
Then we'll do a read aloud..and have some independent reading.

At some point we're suppose to have a fire alarm this morning.

Period 2 -we'll have our Writer's Workshop.  Our mini-lesson will focus on writing a proper letter.

Period 3 we have the gym, we'll be playing some standard dodgeball...possibly Grade 3's vs Grade 5's?

Period 4 is math.  I'm hoping to teach the game, Race to 100.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3puGb9f50unUTRMNWxIMmJubFE/view?usp=sharing

Period 5 we have Library/book exchange (and I think the Grade 4's will be back around this time).
Period 6 Mr. Woolley has both grades for French.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday, 27 September 2018

Here is what I hope today will look like.

Period 1 -Mrs. Coric is teaching health.
Period 2- we're headed to the library to further explore 'My Blueprint' with Mrs. Pauls.

Period 3-The Grade 4's are off to Mr. Woolley for French...the Grade 3's are helping our Grade 1 friends use the chrome books for the first time.

Period 4 we'll be doing a little math...practising using 10 frames to make 10 and trying to sharpen our addition skills with 2 and 3 digit addition.
-making ten-ten frames
2 digit:
3 digit

Period 5 and 6 is the Terry Fox

NOTES:
-Grade 4's go with Mrs. Sylvester and Mrs Flindall's Grade 4's to the Ancaster Rocks and Minerals show tomorrow...remember to bring a 'disposable' lunch.  If you want, you MAY bring some money to buy a small souvenir.  Bus is leaving first thing....don't be late!

Wednesday, 26 September 2018

September 26th

Another good day...

Here's what we did (so far)

Period 1: We worked on our Laurel Busch Cats for red-light.
Then we started a new read aloud, The Tale of Despereaux (there is a movie for this book we'll watch after we finish the book...please don't let your kids watch it first).
Then we did some independent reading.
Period 2 we practise for our first fire drill on Friday....we did 'okay'...we still need to practise.

Period 3 The 4's went to French and the Grade 3's and I worked on navigating the Glenview P.S. website to find my blog...we'll be using it tomorrow when we teach our Grade 1 buddies.
Period 4 we watched this video, because my SK son told me we had to:
Then we did science...the Grade 4's worked on the chromebooks to investigate the 3 types of rocks after watching this video:
The Grade 3's continue working on their force experiment...determining if lifting or pulling requires more force.

Period 5 we have gym...we'll continue to work on our collaboration and locomotion with a new version of 'skittles'.
Period 6 we have music with Mrs. Haynes.

NOTE...tomorrow is the TERRY FOX run periods 5 & 6... please dress accordingly.  Grade 4's have their field trip to Ancaster Rocks and Minerals show on Friday.  All day.

Friday November 20

Dear Parents, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for a wonderful year so far. It has been a joy working with your children, and I’m...
